Ezequiel Garay

Makes sense to me to bring in a CB

We are grand at the minute but how many times over the last 2 years have we had to have Carrick or Valencia in defensive positions

We've been lucky of late with Rio/Vidic but they need to be played sparingly

Could indicate where he sees Jones' future
As long as Vidic doesn't show a recurrence of his injury it doesn't make sense for me. We have enough cover with experience.

Seem fine having another CB as Rio and Vidic could not play every game, Jones can be used just as much in midfield as defence, Smalling can play RB.

They are not playing every game. Evans has played a lot this year, while Smalling and Jones have barely played. With the addition of Garay it will be a total overkill. Unless one of Rio/Vida leaves, can't see this happening.

Yeah that's my thought also. If Garay comes in id almost say it's certain Rio is off. He's got a couple of months left on his contract and signing a new defender signals he wont be getting another one. Jones and Smalling are at the age now where they need to be playing games if we want to see their full potential, playing 1 in 5 games really isn't much good for anybody.

SAF has already said 3 times a 1 year deal is on the table. Rio confirmed it himself too but said he will decide later in the season.

SAF last time said that he needs to sign before the season is over.

Don't think it will be a case of not offering him a deal. But he might prefer going to USA/Qatar etc.. like Nesta/Cannavaro instead of being a squad player like Giggs/Scholes are these days. Or he might go into broadcasting as it is strongly rumoured BT sports wants him to be their main pundit for the new channel next season.

Last year it was Gaitan, wasn't it? Done done, yada yada. We've seen what happened there...

I just can't see it. I can't see us letting go of Vidic, who is our most important defender. Rio has proven himself again a a player still at a very high level, and I don't see him leaving the highest level of football before he needs to. Evans has done very well, Smalling and Jones are great talents who despite everything have barely played, certainly at their natural positions.

Barcelona are interested now  Taking Madrid's reject will be revenge for Figo

Highly unlikely he'll go to Barca, Real Madrid still get 50% of any deal involving Garay and I'm pretty certain they won't like the idea of him going to their biggest rivals!

I think that they get 50% of the money from the transfer, but Benfica can sell him wherever they want and Madrid cannot do anything about it.

Odd transfer. Only reasoning I can think of is that despite Vidic looking amazing since coming back, Fergie doesn't fully trust him since the injury.

We have Jones, Smalling, Evans, Rio and Vidic - in addition we have Michael Keane who is doing brilliantly at Leicester. We don't need another central defender

We should send all our young players to play on loan in Portugal. A good season and they'll be worth 20 million euros.

Or we can just make chairman the chairman of Porto, or even the chairman of Benfica.

Only way I can see us signing him is if one of Rio/Vidic is off in the Summer (Rio would probably retire more than anything rather than join another side). It's unlikely, so I'll stick to my theory very early in the thread by saying....

We'll sign someone based in Portugal in the Summer. Who though, is the million-pound question? (Potentially rising to £35-odd million to be fair).

Could be Gaitan we are looking at again....not Garay. Unlikely but not out of the question.

Looking at our CB's, they seem to me either slightly past their best and most consistent or nowhere near their best yet.

I'm going to guess Garay is around 27, which is when CB's tend to hit their best. If so, the transfer makes perfect sense to me.

However, I do not know how credible the information is. I would guess, as many say, it will be another Gaitan.

 Google is your friend

He's 26

Also, if he doesnt sign him and never had any slight interest in doing so, then 99% chance hes right

Rio Ferdinand is 34. Has one more season remaining at the most I would imagine. Makes sense to sign an experienced centerback to replace him. Vidic is 31. After those two there is a gap to Evans (25), Smalling (23) and Jones (20). This signing would make sense to me.

That ssaid, if Rio stays on another year, I don't see it as being vital.

Going through the scenarios:

#1 Rio retires this summer. Unlikely because it sounds as if he's going to get another contract but nevertheless, let's entertain the idea. He leaves, some might say we need an experienced center back to replace him. In comes Garay. Garay, Evans, Vidic, Smalling and Jones, with the exciting prospects of Keane and Thorpe in the background. How are Smalling, Jones, Keane and Thorpe supposed to develop if they don't start the games. I mean, in the big-matches, we'll probably toy with Garay/Vidic/Evans as they'd be our most experienced pairings. OK, Thorpe and Keane may go out on loan - but once they come back, they'll still be battling with a one-year older Garay, Evans, Smalling and Jones. Clearly one or even two of Smalling/Jones/Thorpe/Keane won't make it at United.

#2 Rio leaves next Summer. Our centrebacks have had a year extra of experience. Evans would be 26/27, Smalling 23/24 and Jones 20/21. Do we really need another player?

I just don't see the need. If Vidic AND Ferdinand are potential departures within the next year or so - then I agree. Even though I think Smalling is mature enough to stake a claim for a place, if we were against Madrid tomorrow, I wouldn't feel 100% confident going in with Evans-Smalling.

If we're really after Garay, then something interesting will have to happen.
Thus, I still think we're after someone that's based in Portugal.

I'm trying to think of players Madrid have sent packing over the last few years that ended up having great success elsewhere. Sneijder and Robben obviously come to mind, but I feel like there are more that I'm forgetting.

Sneijder, Robben, Huntelaar, Van Der Vaart, Samuel, Garay, Adrian, Juanfran, Mata, Negredo, Valero and Samuel Eto'O are notable ones

Sent them packing after they were integral first team members with only injury getting in the way yeah.

Garay is more like Pedro Leon in that he was bought from a Spanish club but wasnt really fancied and didnt play. I dont think theres any reasonable comparison with them or even Van Der Vaart who at least came in and had one or two runs in the team where he was important.

Gago is doing well, too no ? Parejo ?

Gago was sent packing from Valencia and Parejo should be the next to. Gago had a few decent games this season but Valencia were incredibly dissappointed and sent him off to Argentina. Parejo is just useless.

Ah ok.

Garay made 21 league appearances for Real in his first season there, from what i can gather.

Picked up injury problems and Mourinho relegated him to 4th choice after he came next season IIRC. Would hardly put him in the same bracket as Leon.

It doesn't make sense to go and buy a £20m defender now. We'll still have five defenders we currently have next season and three of them are young enough to carry on for another decade. We've also just gone and spent £25m on two highly rated young English centre halves, both of whom have been good so far.
