Ezequiel Garay

Something is missing here:

Makes sense - there were so many of them :)

We have loads of defenders lads but we only have one Vidic and when he was out injured last season we could not keep a clean sheet for love nor money, that is a problem and maybe the club think Garay has Vidic like qualities which will solve that problem.

Really? The same Garay who played for Madrid?

Some players need settling in time ( not something Madrid are famous for giving) Evra and Vidic were not too hot when they first came to Utd.

And its not as though United have never sold top class defenders too early...

It's almost as though the coaching staff know more about Rio and Vidic's fitness levels than we do.

Just had a look. Vidic is our best CB, as the stats prove. But Evans really isn't that far behind, in fact i'd say that he's probably our best CB now. The issue I have is by signing Garay we're basically going to deny Smalling and Jones future playing time, people say they need experience, but how are they going to obtain the experience when they're not playing? I think we're a year too early with this. Test out Smalling and Jones this season, if they fail to deliver, then sign Garay next summer to replace Rio or Vidic.

Below are stats taken from Transermarket when each player is listed as a "CB".

Vidic started 18 kept 8 clean sheets
Evans started 21 kept 8 clean sheets
Rio started 26 kept 7 clean sheets
Smalling started 6 kept 2 clean sheets
Jones started 3 kept 1 clean sheet

lets be honest this is probably Ferdinands last year - this signing is with the future in mind.

That's the only way this signing makes sense. Unless everyones mistaking Benfica's centre back for their centre mid.
There is plenty of time to sign midfielders, if this signing does happen it does not have to affect our cm signing plans. It does show we have long term targets that we are closing in on and seeing as Moyes has said he needs to strengthen midfield we can take it he will.

Vidic is our best, clearly. But Evans is our 2nd best and has ball playing abilities that Vidic does not

Of course it'll affect our plans for the midfield. I can see Jones filling in more often than not in cm if we sign Garay.

Why would you doubt what the manager says? Do you think he did not know about the Garay signing (if its true) when he said he was going to strengthen midfield? Maybe you are taking the piss I suppose? Hard to tell when its not funny.

Moyes seems to be stockpiling defenders the same way Pep is with midfielders.
This is not where we need reinforcement right now.

Easy now to see why the Bayern fans were so underwhelmed when they were linked to Thiago. They don't need him either.

I've read Garay likened to Luiz at Chelsea, please tell me that's not accurate?

So you're getting upset about a player you know nothing about?
Typical muppetry.

lol who said I was upset? We could sign Kompany and I'd still feel the same about signing another CB. You have a horrible habit of reading what you want to read

It's like watching someone arguing with themselves

Charlenefan and charleysurf are two different people.

Based on? They're probably as good as him.

I've seen plenty of him, and he's not better than Evans. Jones, in my opinion, is only a season of regular games at CB away from being just as good as Garay. Better than Smalling at the moment but Smalling is young and rarely gets to play; he has huge potential, whereas Garay is basically as good now as he's going to get.

Regarding the comparison with Smalling it's a wild guess based on the fact that Garay is first XI choice for quite a while in a relatively strong European team. I can't say I've seen enough games of Smalling to be sure of that, but I don't think most here have seen enough games of Garay either. If you have then you're better placed to judge than me.

I was thinking Jones (as a CB) when I said Evans. I think Evans is at least as good and probably has a higher ceiling than Garay.

This is the first time that the CAF would actually be disappointed with a signing. I don't see anyone saying it would be a good idea.

If this goes through it would hardly be a "Moyes signing". Seems like SAF had this deal wrapped up in January.

People are morons, since when is signing a defender such a fecking bad thing?

When it's an unnecessary transfer, with the midfield needing investment.
It could also limit playing time for our two young centre backs, becoming detrimental to their development.
It's far from moronic to question this transfer, very far.

Ah, then we're closer to agreeing. I think Evans is already better and, as you say, has a higher ceiling. I can't say Jones is better yet because he simply doesn't play there enough for that to be valid. But from the times he has played there, I'm confident it will only take a run of games for it to be very obvious just how brilliant he is, potentially one of the best CBs in the world some day. And Garay, while solid, is not that sort of quality.

I don't claim that expecting Smalling to become as good/better is anything other than guesswork, but it's an educated guess not a wild one. His actual defending has been consistently excellent since he came to United, and there have been times where he's had long enough runs of games to show that consistently. The problem at the moment is that his distribution and confidence with the ball at his feet was never good and seems if anything to have gone downhill. But that's probably got as much to do with the fact that these days he gets so little football (not helped by a sudden spate of weirdly persistent injuries). So it's not wildly optimistic to hope that, in a couple of seasons, with more football under his belt, he might be as good as Garay is now.

This signing wouldn't excite me, but I can see the sense in it. I get the feeling all is not well, physically, with Vidic. Rio, we know, struggles to play twice a week. If Vidic is of a similar fitness level, then having an extra experienced defender to rotate makes sense. Maybe not £17mil of sense, but if it means Carrick can go a season without playing in defence then it's surely a good thing?

I'm excited by the signing (if it gets rubberstamped) & its definitely cover for our CB's. We've been ravaged in that area for the past 3 years & its so frustrating seeing a bandaged up defence away to the likes of Pool, City, Chelsea, Arsenal & Spuds.

You're kinda expecting the worst from every conceivable attack or set-piece. Watchin United is tough enough at times, but with a makeshift backline - i'm a bundle of nerves prayin we dont go a goal down, but you just expect to concede at some stage, unless the opposition are shite or DDG is havin a stormer, which he did on many occasions - especially at Real where he was outstanding once again!

Still just hot air or this pointless buy gathering pace?

Spanish press are reporting it. European correspondent (Irish bloke) on Talksport said a while ago, that its pretty much sorted (fee agreed), bar the medical & signing contracts..

Good signing in my opinion. That Irish lad rates him very highly & said that Garay's nickname is "The Wall"

A physically dominant and experienced defender would be great. Without vidic, we can lack a bit of brutality in defence. But the caf seems to think he's a bit average. I have no idea who he is to be honest.

Eh, most of them reported Thiago as a done deal as well, only no doubt in this case we'll end up getting the player because no one else wants him. To me if there is doubt over Vidic then it's time to start putting more trust in Jones and Smalling rather than buying some slow coach CB from a mediocre league.

The Thiago saga was seemingly swinging our way until Pep stuck his nose in though, so i'd say the reports are to believed that he was favouring us until then. He wasnt linked with anyone else but us & for many weeks, but lets try to forget about that. The whole thing is annoying!

This Garay deal has been mooted for most of last season though man & Fergie was after him a long time ago - before he chooe Real. All the CB's will get games, but i'm just glad we're gonna have some extra cover because our luck with injuries at CB has been atrocious these past few years, so its a good signing in my opinion if it comes off - a safety net so to speak.

In fairness, where are you gettin this info that Garay is crap? He cant be crap if we've been watchin him for quite sometime now & are willing to fork out €20m. I think Arruda said he doesnt rate him, but he's gonna be biased being a Porto fan though, scousers continously say that Rio was always shite & overrated, so i'd take any negative comments with a pinch of salt to be honest.

If he signs, then hopefully this will get the ball rolling & Moysey gets the bit between his teeth for a spending spree :nervous:

Most of the reports emanate from Portugal though, just the same as all the Gaitan and Rodriguez reports, neither of the other deals went through and I'm hoping this one doesn't either. We've had poor luck with CB injuries but we can't just keep buying more on the possibility we might get caught short. We have 5, that is more depth than any of our PL rivals.

I never said Garay was crap, I just said he was slow and plays in a mediocre league, he couldn't cut it in Spain. I'm not claiming to be an expert but I saw him several times last season and he never really stood out as good or crap, but he did look very susceptible to pace.

I can't possibly phantom why you'd think that. Is it some kind of automated process - "he's their rival, hence he probably says every Benfica player is crap?". Because I've been saying the exact opposite about Garay.

How many times have we heard that!
