I think you’re misconstruing what I’m saying. I agree we should go for him regardless of whether Rasmus is a success or not. But strikers cost a fortune now and the days of clubs having multiple top strikers on the books (especially when most only play with one up top) are long gone. I just can’t see the club spending £150m or so on a striker if the one they paid £72m a year ago proves to be a success. I would love if we got Ferguson but I’d be shocked if it happens unless Rasmus flops big time.
Ah sorry! I have faith in ETH. Every press conference he says we need two top options in all positions and Martial will be out of contract (if we don’t extend him…) so we’ll need to bring someone in. Ideally he won’t leave until 2025 and we’ll have got the RB, CB and DM in by then.

Yeah I’d say most managers want two top up front options but great strikers are rare and very few teams have more than one top striker now. I can’t really think of any actually?

I think best scenario is as you say and he waits til 25 or 26 to move in which case you’d hope we’d be in a more comfortable position to sign him. Next summer though it’s not outrageous to see all of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea bidding for him :(

I think if we’d have gone in early we could’ve gotten them down to 80ish.

Look at the money Brighton are selling players for, even after one season there and he signed a new contract In April. He wasn't going for 80ish.

Obviously very mature performance.

But let’s not get all down and beaten.

They were looking for 80m for Caicedo towards the last few weeks of the window. It was only Liverpool’s mad bid that forced Chelsea to go higher. I think if we’d have gone in really early before the crazy fee we might’ve had a chance.

Think people are right that Brighton wouldn't have sold him for anything less than extortionate money - although Chelsea have normalized those domestic fees now - and obviously if he has anything like a 15+ season they're going to demand even more. If SAF of anytime post 93 up to 2013 was suddenly installed as manager under present circumstances, then - well, a lot of things would start to look different (!) but I'm pretty confident, for one, that he would have quietly persuaded Ferguson to demand a release clause when signing his current contract at the end of last season, even if EF was insistent on staying at Brighton for another year to develop himself.

ETH is obviously a 'respected' manager and may even win us more trophies soon, but the combination of managerial-era SAF aura and the club operating as more or less a trophy guarantee at the time (and once again, if he was magically reinstalled at his 'peak powers'), plus his drive to acquire the very best British talents whenever possible, probably would have pushed it over the edge. This is despite what's being said about Brighton not dealing in release clauses (Mac Allister, after all, managed to negotiate something close to one, hence the much lower price) and how much Ferguson has bought into the Brighton project.

He’s a United fan, which is good. There’s no major hurry to get him to be honest. We could sign him in 5 years time by then he’ll still only be 23. Let him develop at Brighton and revisit this situation in a few years time. On a side note, when was the last time we’ve had an Irish player who was financially valued as highly as he is?

There is a hurry when Chelsea, Liverpool (tried to get him before Brighton) etc will be trying to sign him next year.

City have two top strikers. PSG have two top young strikers now. Newcastle have two that would get lots of games for us. Liverpool have 3 who play there (but are versatile) - Arsenal have two that would have started for us last season…Brighton have 3 strikers I’d take ahead of Martial! Chelsea will most definitely go for him - but he seems pretty sensible to me. Liverpool with Salah money burning a hole in their pocket definitely a concern though…

Probably never has been - not even adjusted for inflation. Closest might have been Roy Keane at his peak?

Arguably the two best young up and coming strikers (after Haaland) are United fans. We've got another few years to get our act together or otherwise every fecker born up and down the country will be dreaming of City.

He’ll go for more in one move than Robbie Keane did in his 30.

He will cost £150m next summer at this rate. The only way we’d buy him at that price, especially with all the other problem areas we’ve to address, is if Rasmus turns out to be proper shite.
Or we have different owners

Liverpool won’t spend that sort of money on a striker, they cried poverty when they were interested in Bellingham plus they already have gakpo snd nunez. Chelsea could be an issue but I can honestly see Ferguson being happy enough to stay at Brighton for a few years and wait for his move to United

Yeah peak Roy Keane would easily be worth 150m or so. Prime Paul Magrath would be worth a bit too.

I'm in the camp where we let him mature at Brighton and buy him when he's the real deal in a few years time.

I'm also in the camp where we stop calling Irish players British.

who’s the second?

Hopefully we get him in January when Qatar are our owners

Premier League goal stats say very different.

There's more to football than goal stats. Francis Jeffers and Alan Smith had similar goal records to Rooney at 18 or so as well.

Not on the same planet as talents.

Does seem a top talent, if he turns out to be a superstar then he's not leaving to join a top six challenger, or 'gotta buy them all' - he'll be joining a top club that are challenging for the top honours. With our owners, we need to be looking at other targets, which we've done Hojlund who could potentially become class too.

Poor Hojlund hasn’t even kicked a ball yet and this thread already has people saddened that we got the wrong player. :wenger:

Nah. Players go cheaper earlier in the windows because their clubs are more willing to sell them. Brighton had just signed Caicedo to a new contract. They wanted to keep him, so they stuck to their valuation and Chelsea eventually made a bid exceeding it.

Chelsea are probably bound to get him for £150m or so next year, aren’t they?

Let's see how Ferguson progresses. Rooney was a different breed altogether.

We haven't even seen what Rasmus can do yet, but poor guy isn't going to stand a chance if he's going to be compared Haaland and Ferguson early on.

I doubt Brighton would have sold him this summer anyway unless it was a crazy offer, which we were never going to do whilst still been held back by the Glazers, and Ferguson might have rejected us at this point aswell, he seems happy where he is to me for now.

That's exactly the type of player he should be compared to. They're both young forwards coming off the back of their first seasons in a top 5 league. Rasmus 2 years his senior.

I'm looking forward to seeing what hojlund can do. Hope he plays a part tomorrow

Great Irish prospect, scores, holds up play, good movement, all the elements to be a top top striker but let’s give it time before shouting numbers like 100,120 and 150 million. Give him time to breath
