Europa League 2011/2012

Wisla have no decent offensive players.

They don't have any sort of defence either.

Flicked over to Brum to see Murphy bottle it after a great flick through ball...This looks a good'un and all.

I've got them both taking up half a screen now, I feel like a modern fan and a complete wanker.

If they would stick a rainbow money pot place on the end of it the competition would be amazing.

But they punish teams who finish third in their Champions League group by sticking them in the Europa. If the team that wins the Europa then gets into the Champions League, the whole thing becomes incestuous in a way I can't quite describe.

Not really.

At least 31 of the 32 Champions League places currently get given via the European League's, normally all 32 would be. 8 Champions League teams fall into the Europa League, and I've never seen that as a big deal. It just means that the Champions League ends up as a Top 16 European competition and the Europa League ends up being 17-24 or something.

It's not like we're saying that the Champions League Group winners should be given Champions League spots, and the Europa League go into the playoffs or some crazy shit. It just gives a reason to try in the Europa League.

Europa is a decent competition for poorer leagues, in Poland it was a big deal when Lech Poznan made it out of the group that had Manchester City and Juventus in it, same goes for this year and how Legia Warsaw qualified for the next round with two games still to be played, after beating Spartak Moscow in qualifiers. I know English fans don't care about it all that much because they got a strong league but would I be right if I also say that Fulham's best season ever was the one when they got to a Europa League final?

The current Champions League distributions:

Of course half those teams will feel a bump if the Champions League winner qualifys via the domestic competition too. Play around with it: Current.xlsx

In domestic competition the one before that was a lot better finish 5 positions higher and a similar number of points better off, but I know a lot of Fulham fans who where devastated at losing like that Europa League final.

Forgot it was on today.

Tottenham need to win by 5 goals to goal through next week, and they need PAOK to beat Rubin. They are probably out then.

Stoke are losing 1-0 to Dynamo Kyiv, but they will still be in first place at the end of this game no matter what. They just need to draw against Beşiktaş away to go through next week.

Birmingham lost to Braga yesterday and now they need Braga to beat Brugge whilst beating Maribor. Similar situation to Tottenham.

Fulham lost to Twente yesterday, now they need to beat Odense at home on the final day to go through.

Stoke have equalised which would send them through.

Fulham lost to Twente yesterday??? Guess you down under??

Right lads I suppose this thread may get a lot more attention.

For someone like me who knows absolutely feck all about this competition, what's the craic with it? What stage do we go into? Is there still like 347 teams in the competition? And were's the final taking place? Cheers.

32 teams left. We are seeded and won't get an English team so we can't get the winners of the EL groups or Valencia/Olympiacos/Man City.

Most likely going to travel a bit for the away game.

Legia Warsaw please.

 Youll get used to it.

Oh Basel that hurt so much. :(

You know they schedule the games so you can watch two per evening?

There are no games tomorrow I don't think, I believe they are all next Wednesday and Thursday.

Played last week and will play next week.

I for one am very enthusiastic finding out if we've got the chance to draw Maccabi Haifa, Steaua București or AEK Larnaca from group J.

Yep they are.

Last time I properly watched a Europa League game was a few years ago when Liverpool were in the competition. Have seen parts of one or two of Fulham's this year though.

I'd like to see us win the Europa League this year too but it'll be very hard and not sure how much of a priority it would be compared to the other competitions.

More info on the Europa League (from wikipedia):

(I may be wrong about some of the teams in the last list)

So what teams is it possible for us to draw?

Always loved the Europa League, great chance for the less-fashionable teams to get their spot in the limelight

We'll find out more next week after the final games but at the moment I think we can draw any of these:

Ajax
Hannover 96
Legia Warsaw
Porto
Trabzonspor
Viktoria Plzen

Ajax would be nice to get a good look at Cristien Eriksen... but really I'd take Hannover.

What's the betting we get Porto and Hulk tears our defence a new one??
