His goals and good attacking play masked his defensive weaknesses ala Vermaelen.

He was defensively excellent. On the contrary, defenders who are technically excellent are often deemed to be poor defensively by default.
It took pundits a few years to realise Rafael was not useless in defence.
Rubbish. David Luiz(though he improved a lot last year), Vertonghen, Pique and to some extent Hummels have been a bit overrated because they're technically excellent.
More interesting then their midfield should be who will replace Bale. What's the alternative on the left wing? Holtby?
Luiz is a very good player but some of the basic errors he made as a defender led him to being chastised as poor defender not his quality on the ball. The fact is he was prone to an error in every game for a while and everybody knew it. Any defender can have a bad game or a tough opponent but they should not be making mistakes with the regularity Luiz was.David Luiz has been excessively chastised for ages and even referenced as a 'poor' defender on here (less surprisingly) for ages.
The fact is, all defenders can make mistakes, or get beaten. If Luiz was ran ragged by Torres in the same way Vidic was, or turned as easily by Eto'o in the CL Final in 2009 - he would get more stick I reckon. However, Vidic generally takes on the appearance of a 'proper defender', while people are still scratching their head with 'hmm, Luiz (or similar defender) is good, but I'm not sure if his position is defence' because he can trap a ball and pass it.
Vertonghen has no particularly defensive deficiencies. He may make an error every now and then, as may Vidic or another 'run through a brick wall type', but his ability with the ball does not make him a defensive liability by any or anything, in the same way that Vidic' lesser ability on the ball does not, in itself, make him a better defender.
Vertonghen was very good but the best CB in the league?
Give me a break.
I fully agree with that, and expect us to finish above them. I think that while Carrick is better, or at least was better than all of their midfielders last season (I think Dembele has the capacity to reach his level at least), as a unit, they have a stronger midfield I think.
Overall, I don't think personnel wise, there is much between them, and I think Fergie could win the League for us with their team, and it would probably be nowhere near the worst collection of players to have won it either.
