ESPN - Mourinho wants to sign Skriniar and Romagnoli in Jan

Not sure that's a great example as I'm not sure we really did replace Veron. Just a couple of cheap punts on Kleberson and Djemba-Djemba wasn't it?

In any case I reckon the similarity between the two situations is extremely superficial. In 2003 Ferguson was building on the back of over a decade of unprecedented success and was committed to United indefinitely at a time when we were financially unmatched.

In 2018 Mourinho is a coach who has brought us modest success at best, hasn't demonstrated any coherent vision for building the team and has a career-long record of being a short-term manager. All this at the time when we are already supporting nearly the biggest wage bill in world football.

Not really comparable.

And some people believe we would have been better off if we kept Veron and let Roy Keane leave(he was starting to be slowed down by his hip problems). But that is a discussion for another thread.

Tbh I'd rather let a new manager have a go at getting our current defenders performing to their potential! Bailly looked immense two years ago but Mou has shredded every ounce of confidence in him!

Jeez another one. Managers don't get all their signings spot on. Clubs with money make amends.

They also don't get all their signings wrong either, every single one of his purchases have either not improved, or more worryingly, regressed.

Those palyers hsould be of good talent our next manager will rate too, don't watch inter games enough to be judging the palyer other than - He looks good

Wait if we need to spend another 130m on CBs, what the feck has Mourinho actually fixed since he's been here? Our attack is even more dreadful than our defence, and our midfield is completely reliant on Pogba (and will probably need Matic replacing). So what's he actually managed to do with the 300m or so we've already spent?

He’s taught us all valuable life lessons about how people don’t need motivation to do anything, instead they should be able to always function at full capability no matter what.

He’s taught us that to get people on your side, all you need to do is clap in their direction.

We’ve been given a wonderful lesson in how you can make your own performance seem acceptable, or good even, by deflecting blame to literally everyone else around you.

There’s been a host of positives since he’s been here mate, what are you on about?

As a bonus I’ve also come to understand that the world of football exists on two extremes, you either give a manager every single player they want, or you fire them. There is no middle ground where a manager is meant to coach and work with the players he has. You either “back him or sack him”. That one will stick with me for years to come.

No, he should be forced to play Bailly and Lindelöf forever. I am also outraged that we allowed Ferguson and other managers to replace the transfers that didn’t work out. Veron should have been kept.

Comparing Veron to some of the dross Jose bought is funny. Plus if you win like Fergie, you dont need to make all signings world beaters. If Jose would deliver the title, no one would care that Lindelöf is a League one defender. But if we fight West Ham and Leicester for the 8th place, than Joses shit signings will get questioned.

Nah. He's signed Bailly and Lindelof who've been absolutely rubbish. Rather save that money for someone else.

And better defenders aren't going to suddenly make us play better football.

I don't think both those signings will turn out to be terrible signings for the club. Remember both of them are just 22-23 and they were quiet exposed because of Matic absolutely failing to give any sort of protection to central defense and pogba ain't any better either . I feel they both can prove to be good signings as well if their is any midfield and structure and proactive play ahead of them, in the long run I think they will turn out to be good players its just that Mourinho's methods ain't helping them as well.

Every single manager makes transfer mistakes. Veron was an example, there are many more for all managers. However people don’t give Jose any room for mistakes here, he’s supposed to keep playing the players he signed even if they are clearly not good enough.

Sell Rojo and Jones then bring in one of them if possible.

Skriniar, Smalling, Bailly, Lindelof + 1 young CB.

A fair question. The other issue is, does Woodward rate either/both of them, or is he likely to veto any deal. I don't know how much Serie A he watches.
Well he did sanction a 50 million deal for a player from the Ukrainian league.

If the board want Jose to be our manager, then make the funds available. If they don't, then don't spend it. But there would be no point in persevering with Mourinho in that case.

Irrespective of the manager we need to bring in good quality players and both would do fine under any Manager.

Yeah regardless of the manager these are signings we should make. If they are actually available is another discussion.

Skriniar has talent, was in and out of the team this year, since they rotate Miranda, De Vrij and him. Romagnoli isnt good enough currently, him and Rugani were highly praised, but barely look like fulfilling their high potential at the moment. De Ligt on the other hand...

We wont get them in January, and both will be expensive in the summer. It will be another case of the club wanting them, but never going all the way to get them due to getting out priced and dithering around. They will all be expensive anyway (except for Granqvist), Koulibaly is another one we should look into. Clubs know we are desperate and have cash and overspend, while some clubs have plenty of money due to other sales and CL and others through investors.

Alderwereld will be on the cheap, rather sign him and promote Tuanzebe to the first team squad for next season.

Would love Skriniar just so we have a gritty centre back again. Sick of watching weak, scared gits like Lindelof, Jones and Smalling. Bailly was supposed to be a solid centre back choice but his rash, unpredictable and frankly crazy style of play makes him a liability.

Have Mourinho read my post?!!!

Skriniar and Romagnoli look so good at tackling and can play out from the back, they could retain possession easily without hoofing the balls but instead, they would drive balls forward and pass to start counter-attacking without taking too many touches, they are soo strong physically that attacking players find it so difficult to go up against them.

Skriniar and Romagnoli partnership would be best and very strong physically, comfortable on balls despite Romagnol has better passing range, strong in the air. Skriniar is good on balls, easily better than Bailly and very strong in the air which Bailly is weak in this attributes, can tackle so good as Bailly, prolific scorer defenders like Smalling. Romagnoli is a ball playing CB that has the better long passing ability, breaking the lines, he often bypasses the press with ease and one of the most technically CB talented in Serie A, very strong as Skriniar as well as in the air, very calm and good tackler but not prolific tackler as Bailly and Skriniar. Skriniar and Romagnoli partnership has all attributes to be the most completed defensive partnership, no weakness in this as all our CB partnership has a weakness, like poor on the balls, injury prone, poor in the air.

There's no way we can get Romagnoli easily, they rate him so highly and he's Italian, living in his home country, loved by many AC Milan fans.

Just get both of them. Get rid of Jones and Lindelof. Obviously nothing will improve and Jose goes too

We need a centreback and there aren't any who are good enough now and young. This was the case in the summer and is still the case now, and will still be the case in January.

Maybe Woodward can waste his time having tea with Sergio Ramos's agent or something and then explain to us all in February how the reason we didn't sign anyone is because he apparently knows what he's doing.

So funny reading some comments in here of some people thinking a player wouldn't play for Jose lol, id argue he is one of the few if not the only manager in the world that attracts players by the power of his name, yet you got people here thinking said player wouldn't come if is still here, the actual reality is no big names would come here if Jose was to leave just like it was before he arrived, well at least not the names every other top club is after anyway. Stop with the delusion.

We did not have a problem attracting big names before him.

Why would young defenders not want to play for one of the best defensive managers around? And earn a mint at one of the worldsw biggest clubs while they're at it. Really not following the logic in this thread.

People are afraid that Mourinho might succeed, doesn't matter if it would improve the team.

Exactly this.

I’m not sure how attainable they are, but they are quality options both for today and the future.

We should get one or both of them, and if we still look like crap (soft on defense, discombobulated in the attack), then it's good reason to say "look Jose, we spent for you and the returns still haven't come." Besides, if bringing one in spells the end for Jones or Rojo, I'm all for it.

Would rather sell Rojo and Bailly along with Jones before Lindelof. The former 3 are injury prone, Lindelof is not. Jones is terrible, Bailly is no better. Lindelof is better than both, and that is saying something.

Football fans can descend into playground brats when they don’t like someone. Narrative is also becoming as popular in football as it in WWE too, so there’s that.

Hopefully Jones never plays for us again, and is our the door on January first. We need some PL teams after centre halves, but there probably isn’t enough of those around for us to get good money for Jones, Rojo and Lindelöf. Wolves may want to make a marquee signing and may be good for one. Everton already played their hand.

Rojo is not going to play much IMO. He should be sold regardless. Bailly just has no sort of consistency and his situation is not really helped by the manager who keeps changing the XI every game. I would give Bailly another shot before cutting on losses.

Jones is a liability and Lindelof is good at nothing. Wilts under pressure. At least bailly is physical and can defend better, just out of confidence right now.

That's my take though.
