ESPN: Man United want evolution, not revolution under Erik ten Hag - sources

Don't bother with the reactionary lot on here. Three signings minimum plus anything else we can recoup from sales is fairly normal for a club that won't be making CL or even EL next year. I'd say that should come to around 5 players total.

I'm sure there really are muppets that believed Rangnick's nonsense of 10 signings.

To be fair Rangnick said over 3 windows to bring us to where a club of our starture should be. It could be 5 this summer if we do well with sales and another 5 next summer. The Muppets are the ones going crazy, some even want De gea replaced this summer when we have more pressing positions.

I'm done putting any weight in to any of these stories - until we see players holding up the shirt I'm going to treat any of these as the blind stabs in the dark that they are.

150m plus sales is reasonable. The only issue is who we are willing to sell. If the likes of Rashford or Maguire were on the list, we’ll have a good amount. If we are selling players with no value, then it doesn’t help much.
I think AWB and Henderson can fetch good sums, as they’re fundamentally decent level players for PL football.

Hmm, so we’re signing Darwin as part of our evolution.

But surely we'll need more than 3 new players if the plan is to ship out 10. The squad is already short on depth in terms of ability, reducing our numbers by 7 shortens it further still.

Unless we have no intention of shipping out 10 players.
Matic
Mata
Cavani
Lingard
Pogba

Then it is what we can get for Jones, Martial, Pereira etc. Telles and AWB have been named in that article as being up for grabs. I have name five definite outgoings, the rest it depends.

If you include the players in the sale list, then we are shipping out 10 if you include those leaving on a free (which is already 6)...

I think some players on loan will be integrated (e.g Garner) and some youth players promoted (e.g Mejbri)

Promoting youth is one way to make up for the discrepancy I guess, but do we have enough of them ready for first-team football?

I don't follow the youth side as much as I used to, but I hear we have a few standouts.

Think we’ve missed the boat on Henderson fetching a good fee, he’s played very little football since he rejoined.

AWB if a good defender for a team that defends first, so you would think there is a buyer out there. Henderson was good at Sheff United so there is a good goalkeeper in there.

I can see us finding a cheap/free gem or two this summer and going all out for Darwin Antony and a defensive midfielder. Promote some more youth. That would be good enough to push for top 4 and chalk it down. It’s not all going to get done in one window either way, no matter how much you hate the current players they are on contracts and don’t have to move elsewhere on less money if they don’t want to. I still think we will struggle to sell players like Martial Pereria etc more loans covering part of their wages till they leave on a free more than likely. Rashford is the interesting one to me. If we are going to be driven more by stats and data he’s bottom or close to it on so many metrics and he costs so much but then he’s marketable. Can the coaches get him playing again? Will he ever actually provide consistent value for money? Interesting times.

The big problem with Rashford is that it is not a can that can be kicked. We are now in a position where we either sell him or give him a new contract. He’s a huge asset to the club and can command mega money. Next year they lose that, but they may also feel this year is a year too soon to sell.

So 3 new players and play with most of the current shit squad then. This lot cant play anything close to what Ten Hag stands for. Hope this doesnt mean Ten Hag has to heavily adjust his tactics to suit the players we already have. Ragnick couldnt even come close to his preffered gegenpressing style for example.

I'd be interested to see Klopps team after his first summer and second summer. Uniteds players haven't been coached properly for years. I feel like ETH will improve a lot of our players.

Transfermarkt: Liverpool transfer history

Klopp arrived eight games in 2015/16. Look at the volume of players in and out.

He did not achieve what he has by coaching Benteke, Ibe, Allen, Skrtel, Luis Alberto, Sakho, Sturridge, Solanke etc better. He got rid of them and replaced them with players who fit his ideas.

We are deluding ourselves if we think our players are going to be playing total football just cos we've got Ajax's head coach coming in. In many areas we need better players.

Now, on the bright side, we have a lot of promising youngsters who could save us some money. I don't think we gain much from persisting with Telles over Williams or Fernandez. Would Laird really be so much worse than Dalot or Wan-Bissaka at this point? I want to see players like Garner get a chance. Maybe there's something in Pellistri or Amad that means we don't immediately have to go chasing a right winger.

However, Rangnick is not wrong to say we need 10 new players over the next 3 windows. If even a handful of our youngsters turn out to be less good than we'd hoped, that 10 number becomes a minimum IMO.

I would say Garner is ready to be in the squad, until we try him we will not know if he is ready for the first team.

It’s hard to see how signing 3 players can be feasible when we are losing 6 first team squad players (I’m assuming that Greenwood won’t be returning) and have players like Martial and Bailly who will be very keen to move. We need at least 5 in my view and that’s still fairly light.

If we only bring in 3 new faces we're going to left in a situation where Ten Hag has to work with a load of players who can't or won't do what he wants, or he'll be forced to change his tactics to accommodate. Either way it's not ideal and doesn't give me much hope for next season

A lot will be leaving, it is more how we replace them. If for once we can buy sensibly instead of going for a mega signing and still leaving us short. Look at who is a free agent, who isn't ready for his Zimmer frame. Which kids they think can offer at least a bench place.

Of course, I’m assuming we don’t do anything disastrous like decide to pay Pogba £500k per week or something!

It's a matter of preference I guess but I'd throw Dalot and Tuanzebe on the list. Jones, Martial and Periera have to go - although I doubt we'll find a suitor for Jones. Probably stuck with him for life.

If he is thinking of bringing Donny back and Garner then they might just be looking at one DM. Scott and Fred taking turns rather than both of them at the same time, a striker and a CB. I would be tempted to get a RB as well. If AWB then it leaves us Dalot :nervous: and Laird who has only been playing for Bournemouth recently. They have said that money, but it depends what we get in sales, plus if we can play the free agent market wisely for a change.

The midfield balance is a mess though. Let's assume you're right and we bring in Donny/Garner.

Donny - DM is not his strength.
Scott - Struggles to do anything, but I'd say his best position is being further forward and running into the final third of the pitch, but he's not a good DM.
Fred - Lots of running but brain farts at the back, he's probably the closest we have to a DM.
Garner - I honestly don't know much about him as a player other than he's got very good passing range.

So from those four players, you only really have 1 true DM in Fred and that's being generous. Personally I would listen to offers for Scott this season and bring in 2 proper DMs. That takes away that responsibility from Fred and allows him to push up the pitch and compete with Donny/Garner for the other spot.

If we were a baseball team he would probably end up the oldest bat boy ever.

Getting so tired of these supposed leaks and lifechanging statements about United, it reminds me of meaningless mental quotes on Instagram. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger"-bullshit.
So now they've realized you can't get fit by working out intensively from March to June and ending up fat again come September, you actually have to make training a part of your life-kind of thing. Boring stuff.
For very, very obvious reasons, this will be a revolution rather than an evolution regardless. We finally get an up and coming, hungry, professional manager - that has been lacking since Moyes (who just wasn't good enough) - and we clear out ten players, leading to a revolution in staff no matter how pretty we want to sell it.

Really Fred and Scott to me are both box to box midfielders. They do not have the positional sense or tackling ability to be DM's. They have both been put in that position with the hope they cover for each other deficiencies, which doesn't really work when they have the same deficiencies. I agree I would rather get two DM's and sell Scott, he hides to me and does not have the passing range to justify his place.

6 players are leaving on a free transfer. (Grant; Matic; Pogba; Lingard; Mata; Cavani)

At least 1 or 2 of the current squad will also leave, owing to a lack of game time/not being good enough.

We currently have 9 players on loan, with at least 3 of those we'd expect to leave. It's likely the other two young wingers will go loan again. (Martial; van de Beek; Amad; Williams; Tuanzebe; Pereira; Chong; Pellistri; Garner).

This isn't so much muppet fans wanting 'revolution', rather, ensuring we sign enough players to compensate for the large amount of outgoings we will have this summer.

They have loads going willing to sell some, and don’t want revolution.

revolution by whom, the players? They already have the fans singing les miserables: fo you hear the people sing, while the players occupy walk street.

They want ETH to evolve shit players. It's like asking Ash to say win the pokemon league with Ratata and pidgie

I guess it’s a risk worth taking. Another year like this and he’s not worth half what he’s currently on anyway. If he hits a decently high level again and starts looking like he actually wants to play football (I have grave doubts) then factoring everything in he’s probably worth a new slightly improved contract. I really don’t like him anymore but he still could turn it around.

Many will be leaving, its true. Thank God many players are taking it out of our hands and leaving. As I am concerned that even players we're looking to sell won't actually go. Dawson's piece mentions Pereira coming back and he's been up for offer for years. United have shown, time and time again, that they'd rather keep unhappy players around creating a toxic atmosphere than accept losses.

You're right that United could navigate the market smartly to strengthen the squad this summer. However, past behaviour is the best indicator of future behaviour. I am not sure that there's anything that suggests we will do better this summer than previously. I hope to be proven wrong on that though.
