ESPN: Man United want evolution, not revolution under Erik ten Hag - sources

150m plus sales is reasonable. The only issue is who we are willing to sell. If the likes of Rashford or Maguire were on the list, we’ll have a good amount. If we are selling players with no value, then it doesn’t help much.

Not really when we should realistically remove 7-8 players from the squad - those with expiring contracts and those that are clearly not at the level we need Man Utd players to be. Jones, Bailly, Matic, Mata, Pogba, Cavani at the very least should go and that is six players that had a role this season. We will be left with a very thin team.

Our squad has been bloated with players who don't contribute for far too long. Those players going and 3 solid 1st choice players coming in would leave us in a much stronger position. We also have a few youth players coming through who can become involved more if we trim numbers.

This. Including the players out on loan, and the younger players in the squad that will likely see more integration next year, this was always going to be a summer of more departures than signings. Didn't Rangnick comment on the size of the squad when he first got in?

He has mentioned it several times, and also as a reason why players are unhappy.

We could sign a CB, two midfielders and an attacker to cover all six of those really. Maybe youngsters like Hanibal or Diallo could be part of the first team squad as well.

If this is true then ETH will also fail. Hopefully this is just lip service and most of this squad is gone in 1.5-2 years

3 quality signings for £150 million and another on a free. We have about £50 million coming off in contracts alone and with potential sales we could have a very decent summer. Ideally Nunez, CB (Torres or Kounde), Phillips and Kamara (on a free). A summer addressing key areas and we can focus on full backs and wingers next summer.

So we have at least 5 players leaving on free (6 if include Greenwood), but we will only target 3 new signings?

What a joke of a club.
The "3 players" number is never really just 3 players. Usually 3 starter types. We have a decent budget for changes and it ultimately depends on who stays or goes. It makes sense number wise because our squad is overly bloated right now though.

You take out all those likely or realistically going to leave and our squad is still:

De Gea, Heaton
AWB, Dalot
Maguire, Varane, Lindelof
Shaw, Telles
McTominay, Fred, Van de Beek
Bruno
Sancho, Rashford, Elanga
Ronaldo

Youth players who might be part of the squad: Mengi, Garner, Hannibal, Shoretire, Garnacho

Expecting/assuming will leave in some way (loan or sell), but likely all won't:
  • Henderson
  • Jones
  • Bailly
  • Tuanzebe
  • Laird
  • Williams
  • Matic
  • Pogba
  • Mata
  • Pereira
  • Lingard
  • Cavani
  • Martial
  • Chong
  • Greenwood
That's 17 players in the first team, up to 5 youth players who might have a role (likely just Hannibal and Garner so let's say 19 first team players), and then signing 5 players makes that a 24 man squad. The likely 5 players being a backup goalkeeper like Johnstone on a free, 1 being a squad player/development guy like Timber, and the other 3 being starters (ST/RW/DM).

He has mentioned it several times, and also as a reason why players are unhappy.

Yeah, I mean haven't we got 4 goalkeepers?

It's weird people have forgotten how bloated the team has been, presumably because how abject the performances have gotten, and the badly timed loan of Martial/Greenwood/Cavani Injuries.

Still have the feeling our board thinks the team is closer than they are. In reality we aren't even close and are bloated with many big name underperformers, especially at the top. With so many counterattack and direct merchants we might actually be starting from a negative position for ETH's football. The squad to manager compatibility couldn't be any lower.

Meanwhile Glazers probably think Ronaldo is going to do a Tom Brady and take us to a title. Whomever renewed Bruno is probably also in a different headspace about his present and future.

I can see us finding a cheap/free gem or two this summer and going all out for Darwin Antony and a defensive midfielder. Promote some more youth. That would be good enough to push for top 4 and chalk it down. It’s not all going to get done in one window either way, no matter how much you hate the current players they are on contracts and don’t have to move elsewhere on less money if they don’t want to. I still think we will struggle to sell players like Martial Pereria etc more loans covering part of their wages till they leave on a free more than likely. Rashford is the interesting one to me. If we are going to be driven more by stats and data he’s bottom or close to it on so many metrics and he costs so much but then he’s marketable. Can the coaches get him playing again? Will he ever actually provide consistent value for money? Interesting times.

Tom Brady has a squad of world class players. Even without AB Tampa are very strong. We have a squad of absolute bottlers, underperformers and players who think they are world class but their level is midtable at best.

What do they even mean by evolution?

It means he'll have to work with 70-80% of the existing players, he won't be able to basically sign a new squad.

The reports from last week pointed towards ETH thinking major overhaul of the current squad wasn't needed anyway so this fits with that.

We're so shit at selling. What could we realistically get for AWB and Telles? Lucky to get any more than 15m for both.

I'm convinced we'll sign more than 3 with all the outgoings, but it won't be a revolution agree, club isn't bold enough
Yeah I can’t see is signing less than 5 players but with the caveat there’ll surely be some free agents in there as well.

Mazraoui seems a very obvious one for example.

IN:
Defensive Midfielder
Right Back
Left CB
Right Winger

OUT:
Grant
Henderson
Jones
Matic
Lingard
Pogba
Mata
Cavani

At the beginning of this process, I believe it's about addition by subtraction. Get rid of as many as possible, and slowly start building the squad in ETH's image.

4 new faces before the start of 22/23, 1 or 2 in January, and 4 the following summer. By that time, we'd be around Ralf's number of 10 new signings, and had time to get rid of the players who would stunt their development.

ESPN spout nonsense, wouldn't believe a word any of their journos or pundits say.

Joining Bayern

3 players? I think there’s a fear of a bottom half finish next season without substantial improvement, just look at Everton.

We'll 100% sign a striker, can't see Martial wanting to stay or us going into the season with only Ronaldo as the recognised number 9

This just means you cant get rid of or bench certain players i.e no revolution. But you can buy a few other players. So same sht different manager

I do not want to sound all doom and gloom and I am long time lurker here but I do not write much because english is maybe my 4th langague.
I love this club, I am from Bosnia and I usually make 2-3 trips to OT to watch the games. It cost me around 1500 euros per trip (average pay in bosnia is 400 euros per month) but this seasson I skipped.
In my honest opinion we are lost. And we need revolution. From bottom to up.
People who think having a new manager would fix our all problems are deluded.

What did people really expect? That we replace entire team?
Certainly more than 3, you can’t just replace 3 players at a time and expect anything to change, it’s a horrendous model.

If they don't fix their acts, they're gonna see some revolution alright.

But surely we'll need more than 3 new players if the plan is to ship out 10. The squad is already short on depth in terms of ability, reducing our numbers by 7 shortens it further still.

Unless we have no intention of shipping out 10 players.

We're almost certainly losing,

Pogba
Mata
Matic
Cavani
Lingard
Jones
Greenwood

And a few out of Bailly, Dalot, Telles, AWB, DVB, Martial.

So I imagine we'll have to make at least 5 signings and promote a few of the promising youngsters to fill these gaps.

What an absolute waste of space crap article that was. Says we have 100-150m to spend then goes on to mention Kane & Rice as targets how does that even remotely make any sense to these daft journalists? The journalism in football is becoming worse each day 99% of the articles are made up BS.

I'd be interested to see Klopps team after his first summer and second summer. Uniteds players haven't been coached properly for years. I feel like ETH will improve a lot of our players.

If you include the players in the sale list, then we are shipping out 10 if you include those leaving on a free (which is already 6)...

I think some players on loan will be integrated (e.g Garner) and some youth players promoted (e.g Mejbri)

It was always going to be a slow process as the club simply doesn’t have the kind of money it would take to overhaul the squad in a short period. That’s never been in question.

What has been in question is whether the idiotic bureaucrats who run the club and the manager can work together for a sustained period coming up with a coherent plan for squad building and improving the coaching and culture at the club. Personally I am very skeptical I suspect Ten Hag will be use to have people who know what there doing in positions of authority and will struggle here where it is very clear that people charge don’t.

If he is thinking of bringing Donny back and Garner then they might just be looking at one DM. Scott and Fred taking turns rather than both of them at the same time, a striker and a CB. I would be tempted to get a RB as well. If AWB then it leaves us Dalot :nervous: and Laird who has only been playing for Bournemouth recently. They have said that money, but it depends what we get in sales, plus if we can play the free agent market wisely for a change.
