A lot of it will come down to how strong his relationship is with Ole. Football wise you'd have to say that he'd score an avalanche of goals playing for City, but I suspect United will know exactly where we stand in terms of our chances of a future transfer, and for me the signing of Cavani as an effective 'placeholder' could be a crucial piece of evidence that we have some kind of emotional commitment from him that he would seriously consider coming to United.
History shows (even recent history) that United are prepared to flex our muscles when it comes to a player that we really want. We did with Sanchez, and Lukaku, and Pogba and Maguire and so on and so on, so I'm not overly concerned that we will have any reluctance in going all in on this one if needs be.
Ultimately it comes down to what the player wants to do, and for all of these embarrassing fans that love to be a downer on the club and claim that United have no drawing power these days, seriously give your heads a wobble. We are a global giant of a football club, we have an exciting young team that will definitely improve, we have the financial power to get this done, and (crucially for me) we have a manager that has a personal relationship with the player.
I agree, it's not outside the realm of possibility that it might actually happen. I think City is the only other club he might choose over us. They're clearly all in on the CL, while hammering all their opponents in a very competitive league, and their dodgy salary schemes must be quite enticing. I would bet on him going there, but won't rule us out.
