Erling Haaland / signs for Dortmund

Shame something didn't happen before the hype-train started. We've shown interest and now it's blown up ten-fold.

Salzburg signed him in August last year, but he didn't join until January. He chose RBS over Juve among others (perhaps us?) citing development as the reason behind the choice of clubs. Then he was in and out of the team before he exploded from this summer and onwards. We had scouts (Jim Ryan I think?) present when he put four past the league leaders so we were definitely aware of him back then. But I fail to see any reason at all that we would be in contention back then.

Haaland if he signs for United : "We have signed another donkey aka Lukaku"

Haaland if he signs for other club: "This is how one should recruit. Top talent we have missed out"
You missed the part where “we are clueless”
Did I do it correctly!

It would show how far we've fallen if we fail to sign Haaland. De Ligt is understandable because we were competing with Barca and Juve. But we losing out to Dortmund or Leipzig for a player we need is ridiculous. It's actually surprising and fortunate for us that we're the only tier 1 team going after this guy

Those aren't going to be the same posters. People have differing opinions on footballers. Some think he'd be great business and others think he's a donkey.

He was doing ok at Anderlecht wasn’t he? But not the stats that Haaland is posting
He was averaging a goal per 2.2 matches from 2009-2011 at Anderlecht. It was good but Haaland has 28 goals and 7 assists in only 22 matches (8 goals and 1 assist come from the Champions League), that is a sign of a top top talent. He reminds me of Mbappe. Back then people were also doubting him, They said He played in a farmer league, only had pace and nothing else, forgetting He's done really well in the Champions League.

The comparison with Lukaku is a lazy comparison. It's just because They're both massive. Like Greenwood being compared to Van Persie because They have similar shooting style, Januzaj to Giggs because They both played LW, Nani to Ronaldo because of the stepovers. It's ridiculous and lazy.

It would be the ultimate slap in the face of Ole if this kid has turned us down especially considering their history, same country and all that to go play in Germany. Even though we are poor at the moment turning down United for Leipzig would be an odd choice. I think he would prefer to play in the prem but it will probably all come down to what his advisors/agent will tell him to do.
Maybe, but if it does turn out that way I think it speaks volumes of how far we've dropped among the elite. Or, he likes Ole that much and has no confidence he will be the manager beyond the end of the season.

If he chooses the German Leipzig it will be because him and his agent/team will have taken the decision that it will be the best step for his development. And it will in IMO also be the correct decision for the player. He will be first choice and get the playing time he needs in a way better league than the Austrian. Haaland can and should wait 2 years before moving to a a top European club.
It would say absolutely nothing about how far we have "dropped among the elite". Thats just crap posting.

'He wont be first choice here. If he chooses a club like the other Leipzig or even Dortmund its a perfectably understandable choice. Raiola is already on record pushing for this, which would of course nicely set him up for another big transfer in two years if Haaland continues to improve. But he is not wrong here, its the correct choice for the player.
Posters here trying to make that such a choice is equivalent of United losing status are incorrect. If anything it means the opposite. United is still too big a club for an unproven (in a serious European league) 19-year old to expect to be first choice #9. Which its why its completely understandable if he looks for a bridge transfer first.

I have seen quite a bit of Haaland, probably more than most in here, but I will not pretend that I’m able to say with huge precision Haalands level and potential. I dont believe anyone can. And if someone say they do, one should be sceptical.

But I can say that the Lukaku-comparision is very superficial. It is made by people who see a big, strong and fast striker, and let their brain cheat a little making a lazy and fast analysis rather than actually studying them properly. In my opinion Haaland is closer to a young RvN in terms of style. But with a beast body and mentality. Will be interesting to see what he can turn that combo into.
I feel exactly the same.

Juve is too. He actually decided to go to Red Bull Salzburg over Juventuswhen he left Molde. That should tell you why the story you present is not accurate.

At the same time that’s still a gamble. What happens if he flops in Germany then no top European club will come in for him in the supposed “2-3 years time”. Also you never know, there might be another young talent or two that emerges that is better than Haaland and all the clubs that were supposedly predicted to come in for Haaland in “2-3 years time” divert their attention elsewhere.

The opportunity to sign for Manchester United doesn’t come around that often.

I agree with this, there will be another offensive talent that no one is talking about now available nxt summer. And the Caf will be all over that player.
Tbf, the last big money transfers of young European talent in Mbappe, (Barca) Dembele and Joao Felix has resulted in one generational success, one disaster and one who the judges are very much out on as of now. (not looking good).
All went for over 100m. All were proven in a much bigger league than Haaland.
When I started to write in this thread I tried to make the argument that as much of his potential, he is not ready for United yet (Haaland) and even if he is; he will limit Greenwoods minutes.
Our investments in players are better spent elsewhere nxt window: Like midfield, midfield and midfield. And hopefully Sancho. There will be a new young "world beater #9" on the market in a year or two. Its not just what we need to add to the squad now. Its no criticism of Haaland.
Exciting and promising player.
Mbappe he is not. Or even Dembele or Joao Felix. And I am talking potential here, not what type of players they are.
And if you mean that Haaland should jump on the opportunity now to come to United because he might flop in Germany its a flawed argument on its own merits. If you wont make it at Leipzig or Dortmund you should not come to United to begin with.

Yeah, I like the RvN comparison. He was also very strong.

It does say a lot about how far we've fallen though. We've signed prospects like Rooney or Ronaldo that came because we were a big club and one of the best in developing talents even if the player started off as a rotational player.

Back then we had a reputation of building young players to be the best. Now we've gained a reputation of even destroying players careers. How many players have we developed since Ferguson left? If this was 10 years ago in what world would a player of Haaland's caliber choose any Tier 2 team over Manchester United for their development

I think its fairly obvious he has offers and has his choice of United vs Dortmund vs Leipzig

Ole at press meet just after meeting him said that he has already made up his mind on where he wants to go. So it's already a done deal for one of the teams. The press are just trying to guess and see if they get it right. My guess is it's already done for us. Just have to wait another 11 days before we see him at old trafford

BS
If he goes to Leipzig or BVB its understanble, he doesnt want to invite so much pressure and limelight at such an early stage in his career its nothing to with us being shite for the past few years

Why cant we announce it if its done?

No reason we can't. Even if we can't officially sign him before January. Also note that no other club has said they are getting him yet.

There's a few options that are likely to me.

1) He has not decided yet and will actually take the Christmas break back home to decide.
2) He has decided, but wants to respect the bidding clubs that took their time trying to persuade him, by taking a reasonable amount of time to make decision
3) He has decided, but Raiola is trying to persuade him to change his mind
4) He has not decided, but has told Ole that we are out of the picture

I'm going with 2) as the most likely. it's just good class to treat the bidding clubs with a certain level of respect

I mean, we literally have Marcus Rashford tearing up the Premier League right now, Mason Greenwood is breaking through, Scott McTominay is having a breakout season, Paul Pogba came from the academy, Tuanzebe, Williams.

Man, nearly half our first team are academy graduates.

The Premier League is stacked with decent players who have come through the Academy. We are probably one of the best clubs in the world at producing players. Because we keep the best ones rather than selling them for a profit to a rival people seem to miss this fact.

Getting a bit sick of United getting shat on left, right and centre and what we do really well being completely ignored. Doesn’t help when it’s mostly our own fans doing it.

Hope I dont end up broken hearted like with De Ligt and Bruno Fernandes in the summer.

Even Pereira. He’s getting a chance to lay a claim. Regardless of how well he’s doing he’s getting the chance.

Sign him up already! I don’t get these contract negotiations and transfer talks! When I change my job it takes 5 minutes to negotiate the deal!

Weird way to look at it considering playing time seems to be the main factor in his choice. He looks like someone more likely to want to join a tier 2 club, play regularly, develop further and then move on to a top club. Raiola prefers to move his players around regularly so I'd imagine that's the progression he has in mind too.

I think people are overstating the influence that the Gross One has in all this. Obviously, his motives are quite different from those of the player. The player and his father are not dumb enough to not be aware of this. He is hired to tough out the numbers. I don’t think they need his advice which is the best career move, from a football pov.

Juventus are supposedly after him, but he'd have to be crazy to think he could compete with Ronaldo, Higuain, and Dybala for a starting place. Napoli were after him too, but they gave up in October because they became convinced he'd sign for us -- based on what I read, at least.

Surely we can do better

Than a 19 year old that has scored 8 goals in 6 Champions League games and 16 in 14 Austrian league games?

Well yeah, we could try buying Lewendowski for 150m or another ready made player, but it's obvious the club has made a big change in their player recruitment policy so with that in mind, he's definitely a player United should be trying to bring in.

Personally I think we should offer to do the deal that allows him to spend a season in Germany on loan if he feels that's the best option in his career right now.
