It didn`t work because his agency wanted a release clause which shows he wanted a stepping stone first. If that get out of jail free card clause wasn`t part of the deal it would be a different story. His next move will be a more permanent/long term one provided we are competitive in some way Ole and Haaland`s history may be beneficial next time round. Like I said there will be competition but never say never

Rooney without a doubt. Haaland is a great talent, but Rooney had the x-factor so few players have. Haaland could clearly end up the better player, but he’s got a bloody long way to go.
True. Rooney was doing big things at an early age. But it would be wrong to insinuate that Rooney was heading towards peaking as a player at the age of 20. It's just weird. They play football professionally for about 15 years, more or less, and time speaks for itself. I don't think there is anything here other than to say both players is insanely good at an early age. Different bodies, different nationalities, personalities, different era and different style. I would much rather compare him to Zlatan because I see more similarities between them in build and mentality, so if anything I think he'll have long and fruitful career with few distractions, little pressure and always taking care of his body. All things that influenced Rooney and ultimately how he is perceived now in hindsight.
Really? Scored a hat trick on his CL debut and then failed to do anything until the Roma games in 07 almost 2 years later. Rooney always seemed to struggle in the Champions League. His levels of performance went up a level in 09/10 once Ronnie left but that was mid way through his career. Haaland at 20 years old has 12 CL goals, it took Rooney till he was 22 to get there. I always felt he lived in Ronnies shadow for far, far too long and he never truly reached his peak.
Whether Haaland can match Rooneys overall ability and accomplishments is the real question, but a 20 year old Haaland is imo a better player than Rooney at 20. Although it's hard to fully compare the two given Rooney tended to play wide and sacrificed himself for the team early on. I actually see a lot of Rooney in Haaland, he's got that same fire and energy.

I stand by my comments, that I’d take Rooney over Haaland. that doesn’t mean, I don’t think he’s a great player, and I’d take him at Uts every day of the week.

Rooney scored over 20 goals in the league twice in his entire career. He scored over 15 goals 4 times. As a goal scorer he was disappointing, he's score some unbelievable goals and at important times but he was never a prolific striker and he was playing at one of the most successful clubs in Europe. If we're talking all round play, i.e. creative and goal scoring then Rooney has the edge, if we're talking about pure goal scoring then there's no contest.
Rooney, and it’s not even close. Weird to say, since I’m Norwegian and never rated Rooney as one of the best players in the world during his time. Haaland is just made for scoring goals, which is the most important metric in football, but not the only one. If he can keep delivering beautiful assists (like so far this season), I think he’ll eventually surpass Rooney.

Rooney was a great player and was fantastic to watch on his days, but the fact that Rooney had freak physique for his small size and age, was English and had a great and long career with us doesn’t make him better than he actually was. Endproduct wise you’ll get 3x more goals from mr Haaland than from young Rooney. Rooney was a 200min per goal and 350min per assist guy throughout his career even when playing CF, and my guess is the Haaland will pass his career total in his mid 20s. Haaland was a late bloomer, and there is nothing indicating he will have an early downfall. There is not many players I would pick over young Rooney, but this one definitely is one of them.
I’d like to see what a young Rooney could do in this current football climate. I wouldn’t bet against a 20 year old Rooney in this Dortmund side would be putting up the same numbers or better than Haaland.

How standards have changed with time...'late bloomer' used to be someone like Vardy who bursts into the big scene past his mid-twenties. Haaland is 20 years old. He is definitely not a late bloomer in my book. The only way you can say that for him is in a comparison with a player like Rooney who became famous at 16. If that was all you meant, my apologies, this is not a dig in any sense, anyway.
And I agree, Haaland will most likely surpass Rooney's output but that shouldn't diminish Wazza's contribution. He was playing in a completely different time. Now it is an attacker's game. VAR definitely helps attackers and the rules have become much stricter for defenders. Rooney was a pain in the a$s for any team he played against ever since he was 16. Roaming, marauding, physically imposing, creating and scoring. Just writing this got me reminiscing of his early days...What a player he was! Super happy we got to experience his career and see him perform for so many years.

There‘s been a seismic shift towards attacking football in the last 15 years with a focus on attacking patterns. At the same age, he was playing behind Ruud who our entire play was centred towards. In a modern fluid system with two wide support players he would have excelled at that age. Comparing the league and system Haaland plays in with the league and system Rooney played in is like apples and oranges.
Rashford’s on 9 in 20 matches! Not too far away from those mentioned.

Haaland is faster, has the best off the ball movement I have ever seen and is a way more clinical finisher than Rooney ever was.

Not to mention the quality of defenders across Europe has taken a nose dive compared to when Rooney was at that age and the difference in league quality.
It's a very different football now compared to when Rooney burst into the scene. Defenders were a lot more active and physical in Rooney's time, to be fair. I'm not saying he will do similar to Haaland as he has never been the clinical strker type, but I'm sure he would have done quite alright and probably better than he did.

Crazy. Yet I've read he's likely just the next Lukaku. The Rooney stats are kinda unfair though. He was never really an out and out striker, one or two seasons aside.
I personally think Sancho is dead in the water now, and I really wouldn’t mind if it meant we could get Haaland.

If United make a mark on the CL quarter/semi finals and compete for the league but fail by a couple of points - I can see why Ole would look at Haaland as the next step up and vice versa, Haaland liking the fact he can help Utd be successful again, gaining the attention and working with a manager he also respects.
It all depends on whether we are able to make the step up and attract top players again. Us just fighting for 4th spot wont be good enough.
