Erling Haaland | Dortmund player

So they'd rather let their stars walk for free like Lewa? Seems to me that the problem lies elsewhere if they struggle to hold onto their best players

You don't need a release clause to sell a player

And when some other clubs are simply bigger/richer there is sometimes nothing you can do to keep a player.

Meh, people need to relax a bit. It's not like we've missed signing an Mbappe, Hazard or Sancho or even De Ligt. He'd come here only to compete with Greenwood for the occasional chance to play.

You don't sound too sure yourself :)

100% agree. football agents fees should be controlled to let's say 10% of any transfer fee. Its people like Raiola who are ruining the game. When I heard we paid him £40m for Pogba to join us I was absolutely stunned. Despicable excuse for a human being.
Why is he a despicable human being for getting big commission? He’s not a slave trader. His client is happy with him, and United was content enough with his demand.

He brought up the Gotze case so was the point that you didn't want to sell him, or didn't get enough money?

No, obviously not. You either prolong their contracts or sell them with a year or more left on it.
Can you name any Dortmund player that left for free after Lewandowski? They are not Schalke after all...
And they stated, that there won’t be any more release clauses after Götze.

The point was that Dortmund lost Sahin and Götze to relatively cheap release clauses (from contracts signed in the club's darker times, when it had a worse bargaining position and more financial pressure), Götze's transfer (to Bayern and the timing of it) being especially painful, so at that point Watzke announced that the club was now sufficiently big that they wouldn't have to allow release clauses in the future and that if players couldn't live with that the club would look elsewhere.

I think your strikers are excellent. I think he is a quality player but when you have martial Rashford greenwood and James who are all proving themselves in this transition time, Is he that much of an upgrade? He looked good against us but no better than I’ve seen martial and Rashford dominate in periods. I’ve said to my Utd friends time and time again martial or Rashford in a Klopp system is scary so I don’t see him as an upgrade on either. All he would do is inhibit James and greenwood progress. I might be proved wrong in the future but for now he would be adding an unknown to a consistently performing front line.

Its was obvious from the beginning that Team Haaland had his eyes on Bundesliga as a better choice in this stage of his career. Probably a sensible decision and if the reports are to believed then Alfie made a really good profit as his sons agent, Erling get very well paid and Mino Raiola as usual made a fortune out of almost nothing as a consulting agent. Crazy money but anyway.

It’s a little bit concerning that United send their top brass in a private jet to Salzburg without success. If we can’t attract one of Norways biggest talent with Ole as a manager then serious questions has to be asked. I also don’t like the briefings we do in situation like this to the the British newspapers. It make us look amateurish and bitter. Stop this shit.

If we are attractive enough then a good deal is possible with it without any clauses. It’s easy to suspect that United and Ole wasn’t even an alternative, they only used us to get a better deal from Dortmund. Forget about Raiola’s involvement. Haaland and his father has the last word in any deal so blaming others that the deal is dodgy or expensive is a sign of loser mentality.

Woodward needs to do a statement of intention in January to show he is willing to back Ole to the hilt. At least one addition if we’re serious to challenge for top four. Solskjaer also needs to ask himself why his project isn’t attractive enough to top talents. Haaland has first hand experience with Ole as a manager and United pay top dollar and he still don’t find us attractive enough. That’s alarming signs.
Yeh. It’s naive to think that Haaland team didn’t use United to get better deal just because Ole is Norwegian and his former manager.

Players think about themselves and their career first and foremost. It’s Not about the manager, the club, nor the deluded and naive fans that thought these players love them dearly.

Given that we tried and failed for Haaland what makes you think Sancho is a realistic proposition for us ?

I just don't see how Solskjaer can attract Sancho with all the other top clubs that will be in for his signature.

I don't necessarily think it's realistic either - but the one thing I think we have is an almost free squad where he can come in an play wherever the **** he wants.

He can come play LW, LF, CF, False 9, RW, RF, CAM & I think if he really is this British wonder kid that United should have - then that's what we need to offer him - a free role in this squad to kind of play as the main man.

We can play the guy on the right wing but then personally I don't think we can play a false 9 like Martial & we need to play Greenwood centrally. We play Greenwood on the right then Sancho plays on the left and competes with Rashford if he isn't on form whilst martial plays centrally. If Martial can't play False 9 then give Sancho a chance at playing that because he is good at passing and making runs..

If we play 424 like we played against city & spurs where we had Rashford, Martial James & Lingard at CAM - then Sancho can play the CAM role playing as a forward who makes runs left and right from central positions to support the attack.

That's personally the only way I see him kind of coming here - telling him that he gets to play & that we can change the formation to fit him in because we want him to join us or some ****.

If we don't do that personally I reckon he goes to Chelsea because he can easily out do Odoi for LW which is his favourite position apparently whilst he can also play RW to suuply a proper number 9 like Abraham instead of a false 9 like Martial who is more of a creator himself..

Dortmund stated after the Götze debacle, that they will not include buyout clauses anymore. So I take the whole reporting with a grain of salt.

It's barely even reporting. More like Unite'd regular excuse that we've seen several times in recent years the moment a deal goes against us: The player didn't turn us down, we decided against signing him. It's quite poor.

Really sorry we misses out on him.

BUT if it’s true Raiola and his father demanded a procentage of future transfer fees, and also demanded a buy-out-clause then he can go to Dortmund for all i care. Man Utd ain’t a step-stone developementclub for some nobody norwegian kid and his greedy agent, but one of the biggest clubs in the world, perhaps the biggest.

Let him go, and go all in on gerning Timo Werner. He could be extremely usefull, both as a CF as a RW. That would be one hell of a signing.

Bild have posted their numbers.

€8m p.a. (gross)
€3m for Raiola

I don't particularly trust them (or anyone for that matter) to know precise numbers at this stage and I'd be surprised if the club managed to sign Haaland for €20m without a hefty signing bonus for him and his father, but I guess it's not a worse source than that Italian expert most people are quoting.

I was for him joining but with Martial and Greenwood I'm not too bothered.

I am disappointed we weren't in for Hwang, though! Seems it's only a matter of time before he joins Wolves.

So if Raiola wasn't his agent and just his advisor, how did the deal break down because of his fees?

Why is he a despicable human being for getting big commission? He’s not a slave trader. His client is happy with him, and United was content enough with his demand.
Raiola is nothing more than a pimp whose own interests run parallel with his clients. If Dortmund didn't pay his commission then Haaland wouldn't be joining them. He did the same with Pogba with us. Who do you think inserted the 50m buyout clause after 3 years in Haalands contract? Another bumper pay day for him. Talking to City about buying Pogba behind everyones back. His comments stirring the shit about Pogba leaving this summer. The fella wouldn't be out of place in the mafia with all the threats he makes towards clubs whenever it suits him and as I said before what's good for his client is equally good for him.

There's a million other things floating around the Internet explaining why Raiola is a despicable human being starting with our very own SAF. Surprised you had to ask.

He’s a great talent, but BVB is a much better move for him to hone his skills and develop rather than the pressure cooker at OT, people would have seen his record and immediately demanded results. He’s a young player and is going to have dips in form, United have opted to go with Martial as the CF so unless the system was changed he’d be competing for minutes with two talented forwards and Greenwood who’s been making significant contributions. You definitely need another forward and probably a top one to ease the pressure and give the opposition another threat to focus on, however for me United’s midfield is in greatest need of balance and additions as well as the backline.

Title winning sides need a great spine, United need to identify theirs and slowly establish that over the coming seasons.

Yeah good post. Not sure Martial would suit Klopp as he doesn't work hard enough, but he's definitely a talented player. There's an absolute gem in there if we can find the way to make him more consistent. And Rashford is approaching world class already.

8 million a year is what, 160k a week? So £130k? Mega money for a teenager.

I’ll admit I’m devastated.

Whilst you can argue we ‘don’t need him because we’re well stocked at ST and need the funds elsewhere’, I don’t think that’s relevant given 20m in today’s world is immaterial to our transfer budget. Plus I think he would’ve been a great addition to our squad regardless.

If the only thing stopping this was our willingness to negotiate a deal with Riaola and Alf, then that’s just naive; and reminiscent of the Hazard deal.

Hopefully we do now sign Sancho, but I wouldn’t even say that’s 50/50, let alone a given.

Said it ages ago. No player with similar talent/potential would want to come here anymore. There’s absolutely no chance of a title or European title for at least 5-10 years.

We simply don't have the pulling power. The alleged “biggest club in the world” tag line and a huge sack of cash for wages is all we have.

Hell of a signing for Bayern. A shame Ole's Norwegian connection couldn't get it done for us.

Good news. Firstly, he’s not a United type player and certainly not with Othe way Ole sets us up. Secondly, Greenwood > Haaland!

Already looking a year or two ahead, huh?

Regarding Haaland, I think this is a good and sensible move for him. I look forward to seeing how he does, I have a feeling he will do great once he's adjusted to his teammates.

He went to Dortmund, not Barcelona. A literal stepping stone club

Sounded like we were close but just wouldn’t agree to the terms Riola wanted, remember he picked up £40m apparently for the Pogba transfer of a team ok to sell and a team desperate to buy. Can you imagine what he was asking for for a player that could be a potential superstar at £18m? He’d be wanting £50m for his future transfer if it all went well which also means he would start causing problems a few years in.

Think we are best out of it personally and anything more to do with that agent.

For 20m, bargain for Dortmund. Bayern just got a new option in their supermarket.

If you go by all the reports, it broke down on agreeing fees. Not agreeing with the player.

He wasnt that cheap with the fees to Raiola and his father. Plus you know Raiola is trouble, so there are non monetary future costs as well

Not too fussed either way, if he rejected us or we didnt want to succumb to their demands, i dont think it says much. Dortmund is an attractive proposition these days, i can see both sides

With all the agent fees, payments to father, release clauses etc you can see why the club pulled out. Their plan is clearly to move him to another club in a couple of years. We aren't a stepping stone club and shouldn't be signing players that don't want a long future here or would move elsewhere for the sake of enriching agents/fathers etc.

I would have liked him here but it's certainly not the end of the world.

Agreed

I don't think United see themselves as a stepping stone club. Dortmund do. That's why they were comfortable with the terms of the deal and we weren't.

Players demanding playing time is a instant no no for me. As soon as you guarantee playing time, they will hold it over you (see Lukaku).

The risk for him with us is that he'd be coming to the most intense league in the world where he may not be better than our current options.

I don't get this "it was the right move for him" bs. This has Raiola written all over it. He will have convinced him that "it's the right move" with the eye on a big transfer later knowing that BVB will only keep him for so long. However, if it were us to pay his low release clause there may not be another move, hense a piece of the transfer money (which I'm sure will be written into his BVB contract). Sure, Dortmund is very well known for playing young players, but so are we. Big difference is we are not a feeder club like they are. This sucks. Now the only way we get him is if we make a big money transfer for him in a couple of years...
