Erik ten Hag or Gareth Southgate?

We wouldn't like the style of football we played under Southgate, but we'd have one.

Ten Hag

England's "success" was in spite of Southgate not because of him. The Euros in 2021 was on plate for him and he bottled it against an Italian side that failed to qualify for WC's either side of those Euros.

I can't imagine any one being worse than ten Hag.

He's egotistical, petty, naive, takes zero accountability and commands zero respect from the players.

Southgate is just as weak tactically but he's got enough common sense to realise it's a fool's errand to back Rashford, and seems to be pretty well liked by the England players.

There are different internal politics at a club, and I doubt his capacity to make the strong decisions at United. He wouldn’t drop Rashford either.

No way, Southgate's football would be torture to watch as we'd rarely score a goal, but we wouldn't be wide open and getting absolutely destroyed by most half decent teams.

With Ten Hag, we still don't score goals (most of the time), get played off the park regularly and concede a lot of goals.

Noone should have to be subjected to either of them, but if I had to choose at this stage, I'd take Southgate's boring dross over being utterly embarassed every other week.
Having Southgate associated to this club and in the history books of this club would be a bigger embarrassment to me than if we give Ten Hag a new deal. I genuinely cannot think of a manager I would want less. I would take Lampard or even Steven Gerrard over Southgate. Or even take it myself and get overloaded with death threats when I lose every game by at least 7 goals. Anything to prevent Southgate.

I'm afraid ETH would be the answer. Southgate hasn't achieved anything anywhere... particularly at club level

I mean that's not a particularly hard decision when as England manager you can swap Rashford for some of the best wingers in the PL. He will be useless at club level, any fan that thinks watching his football for more than a season will be enjoyable is kidding themselves.

Southgate would make us a top 6 team, no more no less. Right now I would take this because Erik is done, he had a lot of chances to prove that he is the guy for us, but he has failed for a long time now.

Southgate would be a hugely disappointing appointment but maybe he could steady the ship and stabilise us in the short term and get us at least playing functional football - an interim appointment at most.

The fear would be this would lead to him getting the job long-term.

I definitely want ETH out, but if the alternative is Southgate, I'd rather have no manager at all and let the players decide what happens on the pitch. Probably will got some decent results here and there.

Why do ETH fans believe Southgate is the only other manager in the world?

Probably the same reason they think Erik's one of the top 5 coaches in the world and there are no suitable candidates out there who could improve upon what he's done here.

They just want Erik to stay.

If we get southgate I’m done watching United until he’s gone. ETH has been poor this season but Gareth is DIRE!!!!

If they actually hire Southgate, the question of whether our "structure" has improved...has been answered in the most conclusive (and depressing) way.

So, yeah - in a "would you rather be kicked up the arse or kicked in the balls" kind of scenario, my answer would be: not Southgate.

(Also: the idea that Southgate would be willing to take an interim gig at United is ridiculous.)

I think Southgate would be marginally better for us at this point but if we bring him in now we will be stuck with another manager who's not good enough for another 2 years minimum.

I'd rather stick with Ten Hag until he's inevitably sacked.

Ten Hag by a mile. I don’t think we are going anywhere under Ten Hag. But hiring Southgate would be the worst appointment INEos could make. Just hire a proper manager

Why does Southgate's name keep popping up?! Did the senior leadership team once say Gareth Southgate was the obvious replacement if they decide to part ways with ETH?

I am at the stage where I would try anything different. Give me Southgate rest of season.

Ten Hag was given an absolute disaster squad and won two cups

Southgate was given an incredible squad and won nothing

Dan Ashworth hired him to be England manager

Imagine being so consumed with hate for ETH that you actually think Gareth Fecking Southgate is better manager. Utter delusion and not sure you can take anyone seriously with that point of view.
ETH is bad enough but Southgate would be disastrous, stinking Old Trafford out with boring, defensive football with the empathis solely on not losing.

I’d probably cut back a lot of my flights over to Manchester if they appoint Southgate

Either being in charge of the club in the next couple of months would mean I check out and stop watching.

I have better things to do than watch us get popped of the park every week. It's not fun anymore.

Honestly, at this point I'm so convinced that ETH will not turn things around that I'd take Southgate, but only because there's maybe a 1% chance that Southgate would be a success - which is better than 0%.

I'd still prefer almost any serious contender to either of them though.

Yes all about the inmates running the asylum

Id rather dogpool comes in to lick the players into shape, than have Southgate here. The man is a vacuum of charisma and personality. And his England teams, even with all the talent in the squads, continuously Forrest Gump'd their way through tournaments. ETH is out of ideas, and should be out of time considering the state of the team after 2 years of his charge.

Seriously, dogpool is preferable to Southgate coming in or ETH staying on. If ETH had what it takes it make this work, he would have done so by now. 2 more games, or 5 more games isnt going to get it done. Hes not the guy.

A rubber duck will be better than Southgate. I would happily see us lose every match than have him as the manager. He will suck all the joy out of football.

I'm pretty sure nobody actually thinks Southgate's football would be remotely enjoyable. In the context of the original question though, some folk (including me) would consider it better to be toothless but hard to beat, as opposed to being utterly terrible defensively, as well as hopeless in attack.

The reality is he's not suitable at all, but Ten Hag should have been out on his arse ages ago. A terrible Premier League manager who has no business being at the club anymore. For all the talk of his supposed tactical prowess, what's it worth if it's legitimately embarassing to watch the team in the majority of games they play?

No its not spot on. It's spot off in fact. Ten Hag might not be the hero we want but in the current climate he is the hero we need. People mocking ETH for the fact he 'boasts' aboout winning 2 trophies are missing the main point that he is actually right. Southgate won't win shit, incapable of it as his cv shows.
