Erik Ten Hag: "I stand firm that I find it a disgrace the way Marc Overmars has been treated"

But I didn't compare Greenwood and Ten Hag.

I compared posters who defend Greenwood, and Ten Hag who defends Overmars. And that's pretty close, probably even worse considering he is Manchester United manager and people here are just average football fans whose opinion isn't that important and hardly anyone will read it anyway.

But when Ten Hag defends Overmars - he’s not defending a literal rapist? So of course that is different.

Yes, that is an important distinction.

Overmars behaviour terrible but Greenwood's is far worse.

Not sure we have irrefutable proof EtH really wants Greenwood back at United, seems like a convenient connection for his detractors, but it is a fair assessment.

Ultimately it will not be his call. The club is still in the process of end of season review. The final call will be made for manager position, Greenwood, signings and etc. We may not know what he actually think.

Another good point.

Personally do not want MG at United, and really cannot see EtH demanding his reinstatement, but we have to remember a sizeable proportion of our fanbase would welcome back Greenwood, eapecially if he scored goals.

Couple this fact with the level of supporters wanting the likes of Qatar to run United, and you can see internal animosities.

Though we may disagree, vehemently, we should respect another's right to an opinion, even if it is wayward nonsense.

Oh dear! Another moral thread.

Not a good point.

Stop using 'moral' as a pejorative.

Just watched the cam on both him and pep throughout the game. Love how ETH went over to our fans at the end of the game and said ‘thank you, best fans in the world’ I'm sure we’ll have more success next season under him if he stays.

He might also be refering about how the sacking went. In most situations a club will give a very important person in their organisation a chance. They will do some kind of investigation and see how bad the situation is. Make the important person participate in training/therapy, donate to a good cause but in the end leave the important person in his position.

However at the time the news of Overmars his dickpics came out there was also a big scandal dominating the news. There was a big scandal going on about how in the TVshow 'The Voice of Holland' contestants had to deal with sexual inappropiate behaviour by important people from that show. People who could make or break the dreams of those contestants. It became a bit like how the #metoo movement was when Harvey Weinstein was accused. It just dominated everything at the time. I think because of that scandal that Ajax had to deal quickly and cut ties with Overmars. Without that scandal he might have been able to keep his job. In regard to how morally correct Ajax really is, Overmars does claim he has been asked by Ajax to come back twice since he left. They clearly didnt sack him as support for their female employees.

Personally i think Ajax was forced to do the right thing and had to sack him. ETH does only focus on the football part and not how things will affect the reputation off Ajax or the stock price of Ajax. He obviously thinks Overmars should have been allowed to stay.
Some important context in this post that I doubt many will be aware of. I certainly wasn’t, so thanks for posting.
I can see why ETH is sticking up for his mate, especially in the light of the fifa pile on. Probably a bit tone deaf though in this day and age.
I will say however that this is Erik’s personal opinion and not that of the club. In this instance he wasn’t ’representing United’ and it has no bearing o. His employment by the club, nor should it.

I’ll judged comments / timing of those

but should make no difference to the ‘decision’. Results etc should be the only consideration

btw @doubleohseven it was tweeted last summer that ETH wanted to integrate greenwood and had squad planned on his inclusion

Daft comments to make publicly. I am sure he knows a lot more than we all do about the details of what went on behind the scenes, but from everything we know, it was pretty bad. So it’s an odd cause to take up. He’s also the manager of Manchester United, so representative of our organisation, and as such I’m not comfortable with him publicly lobbying on behalf of someone fired for serial sexual harassment.

Increasingly stupid, the more I think about it.
Yeah, this.

I went to school with ETH, sound lad. Wouldn't have time for that Overmars lad.

Dont remember that, which journo was that?

I remember a journo (at the time it seemed like we’d bring Greenwood back) asking if he had a place in the squad and Ten Hag saying yes.

Don’t remember without digging through that cesspit of a thread again
I remember Whitwell (?) asking about it and Ten Hag being non-committal. There was also a PC last Summer ish and he was pressed on it and (twice?) said it’s clubs decision.

For Overmars, he should have been as non-committal.

I don’t think his interview handling is as good as it should be (the language doesn’t help, he has an odd choice of words sometimes)… someone in the club should clearly tell him we’re clickbait for the lazy wxxxers that call themselves journalists and to learn a no comment style reply, so they keep wasting their allotted 1-2 questions.

His comments unless we are provided with further explanation as to what exactly he meant are inexcusable.

Without knowing much about what Overmars actually did, how much of it was unsolicited and creepy/stalkerish, and how much just inappropriate/Christian Hornerish, I'd say it's way more damning how ETH has acted with Promes and Antony and Greenwood.

Promes is a murderous serial offender, Antony might have been on the wrong end of a Brazilian instagrammer campaign but he still could be a violent domestic abuser, and Greenwood was going to be welcomed back into ETH's squad if there had been less public backlash.

First two you really have to question how bad a judge of character ETH is and with Greenwood you have to question whether his priorities are out of wack.

It is not rocket science. He meant exactly what he said. He thinks Overmaars should have been protected because he was a high performing director, and that Ajax caused their own downfall by not sticking with him.

I'm probably biased because Ajax is my club and the club went absolutely downhill after he left. But for what it's worth, it's not like he raped or even sexually touched anyone. He was a little too flirty and sent a few d1ck pics. Stupid yes, criminal? Not in my book.

Should've taken his phone, forced some therapy and have someone follow him around to check if he doesn't do anything stupid.

And for everyone who do thinks throwing the book at him was the appropriate treatment, you might as well start firing managers and C-level left and right because this stuff happens

Apart from thinking sexually harassing women at work is pretty much okay. What else is your favourite thing about living in the 1970's? Disco? Flair trousers?

Yes he was good at his job, it doesn’t entitle him to that kind of behaviour.

I mean isn’t that a good thing? Surely we shouldn’t tolerate that behaviour?

Well, yes, if people are doing this they should be fired.

I'm confused. What was the point?

Yeah he's shown consistently he's not that aligned with a lot of fans morally.

It's not a great look tbh.
When has any manager come out and called one of his own players a scumbag for the bad shit they do. At worst they say nothing. Which tbf he should be doing, all you have to say on this stuff is nothing and say its a club matter. I wouldn't bet that Fergie would have sold Ronaldo for the allegations if he was still at Utd

Yeah absolutely ridiculous to think Overmars shouldn't be in jail for sending cock pictures. Which absolutely no one on this forum under the age of 30 has ever done, least of all the people demonising him for it.

No he should not be in jail. He should have lost his job, which he did.

I'm sure if your daughter worked there you would be pleased to know that her employers have been clear that they won't accept members of staff sexually harassing eachother.

Half the caf is more catholic than the pope it seems.

I'd teach my daughter to tell an old geezer from work to feck off if he sent a dick pic. Doesn't matter his function. But according to the research, none of them did.

Catholic is an ironic choice of words but I won't go into that.

I think it's a positive that a company doles out appropriate consequences for sexually harassing your work colleagues. Especially when in a position of seniority.

Pfft this place has gone so woke amirite?!

I have no problem with it. He’s standing up for someone he’s close with. Sir Alex (and Gary Neville) went to court to testify what a wonderful man Ryan Giggs is despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

Sending unsolicited dick pics is a criminal offense according to Dutch law.

Gosh stop being so woke. They should have just taken his phone and just employed someone to follow him around and make sure he didn't start flashing people in the hallway. Definitely a better solution.

You do? Based on “he still could be”?

How would you feel if this happened to your daughter in the workplace?

So what is the legal definition of unsolicited? The receiving party specifically has to ask for one, otherwise you're a criminal? Because if that's the case I know a few guys and even more women that should lose their jobs (assuming the same rules apply for women, let's say a boobie pic)

Yes.

Most sex crimes go unreported, so that’s not a surprise.

I don't think you're actually confused about what unsolicited means.

Well, for one thing there's no rule stating that you must stick up for your mates in public if they've done something wrong. You could - you know - support them in private (if you think they deserve it) and keep your mouth shut about it when talking to the media.

Secondly, he doesn't say that he thinks O. was overly harshly treated. He says he thinks the way he was treated is a disgrace. Pretty strong words, you could say, uttered in support of a man who was fired for sexual harassment. It's tone deaf at best - without even touching on what ETH's personal views on the subject itself might be.

It's funny seeing some folks (the biggest trolls) who have a strict no-nonsense approach in other threads twisting themselves in knots here trying to defend this.

At the end of the day United is secondary, the primary purpose of the internet is "Winning".

This isn't bias. This is the outdated and disrespectful view of an unpleasant person who lacks basic morals and a understanding of law
