It's the opposite, they don't have a clue so they're letting the manager whoever the feck he wants and just sign them regardless of their potential. Even the previous managers didn't have that much freedom, which means we're going backward in terms of recruitment strategy, as shit as we were previously.
But how do you know for sure these are his primary targets? Because FDJ and rabiot are nothing similar so how come eth would want him.

he made the classic blunder like moyes of trying to give the crap that is here a chance, but moyes at least had the excuse of taking over a club that has just won a title. he's not going to get the help he needs from above him so he will have to do a hell of a job coaching to get United to a consistent level.

Just saw his post match. Really liked it. No Ralf style excuses. Said the players he has need to do better, says no excuse for losing the game, didn't try to manage the narrative to create endless time for himself. Reflects his demeanour on the dugout... It upset a lot of people that the prior managers didn't shout and scream but I always prefer a calm manager. We will improve next week I feel sure, regardless of transfers

I am the only one slightly depressed by the transfer rumors of today? I went into this season fully expecting unstable results, but also that there would be a sense of direction and perhaps a sniff of long-term improvement. With the summer clearout and decent signings, I was at least somewhat optimistic. But if we now plan on shooting ourselves in the foot by signing mediocre players with difficult characters in Arnautovic and Rabiot, you can't really argue that there is a clear plan anymore. And for this project to take off, we really need to sign the right players.

It's probably a bit dramatic, but it feels like a major dent in the optimism of getting ETH in the first place.

I'll repeat myself again in this thread but the guy was never in charge of transfers. He was not responsible for recruiting players at Ajax, he's a coach, he can coach players, he can tell you what he needs in a player but he has no experience scouting, signing players and this window has shown that.

Rabiot isn't FdJ alternative as we havent pulled out of that deal yet. There's absolutely no reason for us to be linked with Brobbery and Arnautovic after missing out on Nunez. It's obvious Ten Hag is the one that wants these transfers

There's obviously no money.

He wanted Antony but will end up with Arnautovic
He wanted FdJ and will end up with Rabiot

Disgusting.

All our signings so far have been players from Dutch league or players he previously managed. None of these players would have been signed under any other manager except Eriksen.

This is what I think as well. No money. No other explanation for arnautovic

No, i've been consistent that it doesn't matter what manager we get, quality players are more important. We're just setting them up to fail otherwise.

Not getting CL was a disaster but i still didn't see us going into this season with a worse squad than last. Maybe i was far too optimistic but that's what it's looking like with 3 weeks to go of the window. Our transfer business so far makes no sense in terms of priorities.

Not getting a result yesterday was a further blow because looking at the next 6 i saw it as the best chance of a win.

We agreed a 75 million deal for FDJ and will pay it if he wants to come. We bought a CB we didn't need for what, 50 million? We have the biggest net spend in Europe the last 10 years.

There's obviously money.

“I knew from the start that it will not be easy and it’s a process. It takes time. But you don’t have time, you have to win games and we should have done better.”

Eh..not sure. The part about it being a process is the same bullshit I heard from all our managers since LVG came here. Everyone of them starts in the first few games saying "we're in a process" bollocks. Few more losses later and the excuses start to become more often. I won't hold my breath. He's starting in the same way.

The board have served ETH a massive shit sandwich. This transfer window has been an absolute shambles. So much for new beginnings, same old incompetent Utd. The best manager we’ve hired since Fergie and instead of backing him we’re feeding him scraps. Yet an out his depth manager like Ole was allowed to burn through hundreds of millions. Beggars belief.

Ok so how do we explain Rabiot and Arnautovic then? because it's the only logical explanation I can see in signing these 2 on the cheap when we know for certain that these aren't the managers number 1 picks

We've blown money in the past but almost every source has reported we need to sell to bolster our budget this summer

Just loads of incompetence from the manager, the football scouting staff, the CEO and board in spending that money really.

I mean it very much is a process.

What are we doing to this man?
What is this man doing to us? Spending our transfer budget on Martinez, Malacia, Arnautovic, and Rabiot. Lucky that Brobbey would rather join Ajax.

Early days, but it seems like a match made in hell.

Have these been judged as not good enough already then?

No, but I think we have much bigger needs elsewhere. While our CB's aren't good we have Varane, Maguire, Lindelof, and Bailly. No doubt that's better than McFred and a few youngsters in CM. Malacia apparently couldn't get ahead of a dreadful Shaw.

And besides that, we can't get a goal against decent opposition.

I do think Martinez will be a good signing but he's benched Varane, did we really need a 55m replacement for Varane when the squad is starting Eriksen upfront?

Exactly this. We have much bigger needs at LW, CM, RB, and up front. Yet we decided to spent £55 million on a CB who doesn't even seem like a sure thing.

And now we're apparently resigned to signing Arnautovic and Rabiot.

Shows you how important that Ajax structure of Overmars, VdS, etc was when it came to recruitment. I'm not trying to knock ETH he seems like a good coach but that doesn't necessarily mean he's a good DOF. Arnautovic and Rabiot at this stage of the summer are absolutely baffling signings that scream desperation / stop gap to steady this sinking ship that we're on.

Wonder what sort of assurances we gave him before joining because it sure as hell couldn't have been "we'll try for De Jong and Anthony and keep Rabiot and Arnie as backup"

How to you explain that there's no money when looking at those figures?

The problem is not that we don't have any money. The problem is that we waste them all. This summer, it unfortunately appears, by blindly backing a manager who doesn't (yet) have a grasp on the quality needed for a club like United.

The club would never target Arnautovic. We're targeting him because ETH wants him.

At the first sight of a training montage this week, with players looking sternly and steely eyed as they go through drills in slow motion, I’ll let out a monumental “Oh, just feck off”. I know that bringing in top players was always going to be a challenge this season but our options seem to have turned from players who can potentially challenge for the starting line up into backups for McTominay and Martial/Ronaldo.

Our team are shit. It might just be the first game of the season to some but many of these players have been shite for years. Nothing changes. Not even the social media ‘We must do better’ posts after yet another shit performance. I don’t care if ETH sprinkles fairy dust on the players so they start having breathing problems and require inhalers, he can’t work magic on what is fundamentally a group of low energy, low confidence idiots who looked decent in pre-season/crowdless lockdown but buckle as soon as the league games start and there’s something actually at stake.

This season will be a bust, we sort of knew that. ETH needs time to build his squad. But if the new recruits are people like Arnautovic and Rabiot then we’re fecked.

When did he manage rabiot?

If we had 160m to spend we would have signed Antony in June. We have maybe 75m left to spend and De Jong is out of reach.

Too early to tell, but the current situation doesn't bode well. The usually suspects imploded in the first real test, we haven't addressed the main squad issues this summer and the planification of the next month seems amateur at best. Running a football club is not so hard and plenty of people know how to do it, just hire one of them and don't fire them when they told you how many changes are required.

Maybe he thought the players were decent being used to the Eredevise and was shocked at the high level of the PL?

I'm beginning to think that Erik ten Hag was not the brilliant tactician I thought he was.

Hard to like the manager with his choice of players.

Im already getting a bit pissed off over him.

When did he manage rabiot?

Rabiot isn't a replacement for the FDJ as the guy above said. We're still in FDJ deal.

Arnautovic is someone he and his assistant know quite well from their time at Twente.

But we know for sure he wanted Nunes and Anthony but didn't have the budget

If the money wasn't an issue why isn't Antony at United? We want Sesko but don't want to pay the fee either.

It's been reported by pretty much everyone that our budget is around 100m-120m. Seems like they have realized FDJ isn't happening else why wouldn't they bid for these players months ago? Rabiot has been openly on the transfer market since June.

Rabiot 15m
Arnatovic 15m
Eriksen free
Martinez 55m
Malacia 12m
=92m and we need a RB and sub keeper with the rest

That will be our summer window and its disgusting.

But we have seen in the past how managers have been thrown under the bus by the same board. Why would it be any different this time?

Also, if rabiot was part of the plan and so was arnautovic, why wait for this long, why not sign beforehand. Surely getting these two wouldn't be such a hassle.

Point is another manager is being thrown under the bus and fans continue to buy the theory that the manager wants these players. Happened with Lvg, Happened with Jose , Happened with Ole and now with eth.
