I hope he goes from "we need right kind of players" to "we should get anyone over these incompetents"

The knives are out it seems:lol:. You can already sense it through the undertones. Another few losses and will be all out mutiny.
Need to give this guy time. We knew we were shit and haven’t really improved the squad. He is not a miracle worker, no one is except maybe SAF. Even he needed a few years to make his mark.

The second half is kind of what I expected from the first. Not quite there but at least you can see something happening. The first half is on the manager though, absolutely no need to suddenly throw Eriksen in as a false nine.

A very good game today. I thought after the first half, our progress is nowhere to see. But the second half, it’s a really good performance and it’s obvious to see the ETH brand playing style right there but we gave ourselves a mountain to climb. It’s a bit too late. Seagulls have been well drilled in their position playing. You can see it when they are on offense and they are so fluid to apply it as they are born to play that way. In contrast, we in the first half after ten mins, are completely lost and it’s reasonable that we have not yet been able to do that in the real competition. Time will get us there.
I feel more optimistic now.

No it wasn't.

Klopp finished 8th in his first season, worse than the 6th place finish of the previous season. Success wasn't instant. At times I even thought Klopp would get the sack with the way Liverpool were playing before they got Van Dijk, Salah and then Alisson and Fabinho the following season.

The manager needs the players that are able to play the way he likes a team to play and its clear that almost half of that starting 11 is not capable of playing the kind of football ETH wants.

He did start with Martinez and Eriksen.

That's a start.

Now get Malacia in for Shaw.

And then get Frenkie in for Scott.

And then weed out the rest....a new RB, then a new CF and we're on to something here....

Its actually not a long road ahead...

He needs our full backing but I didn’t see a shred of improvement in that 1st half performance and that’s all I was hoping for, regardless of the result.

To be honest, why are people surprised? This was always going to take years to fix. It was never going to happen this season. No matter who we sign, we are never getting top four this season. Accept it.
It won’t take years. I assume you watches the second half. If we keep going, no more than two months, we will be playing very good games consistently.

Feel sorry for him today. Has my backing as it's just the first match.

God, it really does make you realise how much faith we've put in people who've performed well in the Dutch league. The bloody Dutch league....

Ten Hag, Martinez, Malacia ... even De Jong has disappointed since he left Ajax.

Didn't really appreciate just how risky this is until now.
The gulf in quality between the two leagues is huge. The PL has more technical players, it’s more physical, it’s faster paced, the managers are better prepared…

Watching Crystal Palace v Arsenal and Leeds v Wolves this weekend, I was blown away by the quality in these mid table sides. Seriously, there are very few easy fixtures in this league.

I don't even know if people are trolling or not.

The 2nd half was obviously better as Brighton players were toasted and couldn't sustain their level of physicality throughout the entire game, there was no brand playing or anything like that, just more spaces and a bit of extra motivation after a very lucky goal.

That's all on the players and their mentality. Been happening for several seasons. Don't know why we're not utilising a sports psychology department. Most of them are useless under pressure. It's a big problem.

At no point did they ever look as bad as that first half against Brighton. This isn't a dig at ETH but expecting players that produced last season's disaster class to suddenly start becoming competent footballers is madness. Be different if there was just two or three but the majority of them are still there.

Exactly. I couldnt believe how the last couple of weeks so many seem confident of him improvign the group of players and his nagical systems improving some of these players. Its one game but the sloppyness at times individually on the ball from the likes of Dalot, Fred and McTominay in dangerous areas in the first half is absolutely nothing new. Fernandes has had less than double figure digits the whole of last season and the ten games preceeding it, without the game changing moments he is simply wasteful he has been for a long long time. Rashford for the last 18months running with the ball (which is rare) generally runs into players and rearely bursts past them and his finishing is poor, could name a few others too.

Now maybe some who have had rose titned glasses can be reminded of where we were last season. We needed up to 15+ players moved on, it was possible as there were several whose contracts were up, yet we have so far only managed to sell Pereira for under £10m and yet again loan players who are technically still here, that is simply embarrassing.

And what have we signed...competition at left back when we have a good one though the consistency is poor. May turn out a great signing long term but dont thing it significantly improves us this season. A good technical midfielder who improves consistency over Fernandes, but he is 30 and does he improve our midfield defensively which is where it is so so weak.

Knew little of Martinez when we signed him, think he really struggled in the first half but grew into the game, I see a proper player in there, think he is the only signing that improves us significantly this season over Lindelof......when as I say we needed 7/8 signings.

Dalot isnt creative enough going forward, isnt aware or good enough defensively and also has sloppy moments, Maguire is poor defending against the break and is too slow on the ball, McTominay is nowhere near intelligent enough defensively and offer little going forward but drive, Fred is a liability in the pivot as for all his work rate, positionally unaware and his passing under any pressure, even simply passing is diabolical playing deep, Fernandes has been wasteful and poor for a long time, so has Rahsford, we are reliant on a 37 year old who (and wo can blame him in all honesty) doesnt want to see his career out here and we have a huge talent in Sancho who just isnt performing so far here.

We still desperately need a new right back, two central midfielders, a left winger and a striker. Without at least 3 of those 5, forget a trophy, forget top four....the recruitment in and out is for me the biggest reason this side is utter shite

I was curious how he was going to get this team to respond when they hit a skid but I was hopeful that we might be able to build some positivity first to give the players some belief and confidence. Unfortunately it's dampened a lot of the enthusiasm for the new season with just one result but at least we're under no illusions about the task at hand and it's probably fair to say that we're going to have a fair few of these days this season so it's best to harden ourselves to it and hope the manager can identify and fix some issues as we go so we can build some positive momentum as the season progresses.

Gotta disagree with this. Not one EPL club are out on their feet after 30 minutes of ok pressing. They didn’t even press that much, just passed around us
We got a lot better when Eriksen dropped deep and we started passing around their forward press a bit.

I hope he goes from "we need right kind of players" to "we should get anyone over these incompetents"

He has already stated that the team needs reinforcements. At the moment he will need to add more defensive balance by using a more compact midfield shape. Probably needs to switch to a 3-5-2 diamond.

I'll question Ten Hag's quality as a football coach and manager if he ever starts McTominay ever again.

His first game and all, but I truly hope he never starts McTominay ever again

Not a good start for the season here but it'll take time to get players accustomed to an entirely different system. It doesn't always happen overnight. The first step is to get Ten Hag's ideas concretized in the players so that its second nature. I think that we may see the performances improve before the results do, but this wasn't a great performance, which is worrying.

Only Erikson didn't look awful out there. McGuire was decent, and everyone else was substandard.

He needs to realise before the window closes that a good number of this team aren't up to it. I'm a bit worried for him and us, if he doesn't. Because lets be honest, its glaringly obvious.

Dear ETH,
I know you are reading redcafe and I am sending this message to you. I can’t believe you expect different results/performance with the same pile of dross on the pitch. No manager will win with these lack of talent bottlers especially Shaw McTominay Fred Rashford Maguire. You cant polish a turd. I hope you understand the enormity of the challenge laid there for you. As a Utd fan supporting this prestigious club way before you start coaching, take my advice seriously. Stop chasing FDJ and bring someone that can play for the role, chasing ball and pressing opponents. If you listen carefully FDJ associates seem to be leaking it to anyone who will listen that he wants to play his football in Spain. Why does Manchester United always have to be embroiled in a diva crisis. Get rid of Ronaldo and bring another striker who wants to play for the club. Make sure to sign a right winger and a right back before the transfer window closes. Good luck for the rest of the season, you’re gonna need it.

Worrying that he didn't substitute Mctominay after about 30 minutes and let him play for more than 70 minutes.
Absolutely. No reaction to the first goal then we conceded again. Not even a half time sub.

Seriously? So what’s the excuse for Rashford, McTominay, Shaw, Sancho and Maguire?

They were all (bar Maguire who played ok) dreadful today, and they’ve all came through the English football system.

I'm not defending them?

They were all shite too.

I'm just saying, we've hired a manager who wants to sign a bunch of players who have only achieved success in a crap league.

Who left that Ajax team and went on to look good elsewhere?

De Ligt and De Jong were the 2 shining stars. Both disappointed and were/are being already shipped out by their new clubs.

Ziyech, hasn't done a tap. Van De Beek - barely exists anymore.

Even look at the rejects who have gone there and looked like stars - Haller was terrible in the PL, Tadic was decent - both were among the best in the league at Ajax.

Blind - milktoast at United, leader at Ajax.

Seeing our current marquee signing Martinez - who legs not forget we paid an absolute fortune for - run ragged today just makes me realise we're putting a lot of faith in Ten Hag who needs to realise he's not competing with Feyenoord or PSV anymore, it's Liverpool, City, Chelsea etc.

He needs to realise before the window closes that a good number of this team aren't up to it. I'm a bit worried for him and us, if he doesn't. Because lets be honest, its glaringly obvious.
What if it isn’t up to him?

It won’t take years. I assume you watches the second half. If we keep going, no more than two months, we will be playing very good games consistently.

We still have no consistent goal scorers. Ronaldo is moody. We still have a bunch of dross that are going to play because there is not a choice. The signings will take a long time.

I don't think there is any chance we get top four - Fernandes, McTominay, Wan Bissaka, Dalot, Shaw, Rashford, De Gea, Ronaldo need moving on. I think that is at the minimum, but that is going to take years to fix.

I did see the second half, but we didn't actually score ourselves. It was a mess up by their goalkeeper. We didn't create much and that is going to need a lot of work. I also doubt we would be consistent with that style of play.

A combination of De Gea, Maguire, and Martinez is a disaster waiting to happen, as we saw today. A goalkeeper who doesn't dominate his area, a slow CB who turns like a tank, and a CB who's 5ft 9. Shocking.

I know from your reply you don’t pay attention to playing style. Potter and ETH both play positions playing (modern, vertical version). It’s not that they can’t sustain the intensity but we execute our play in the second half a lot better.

If he still thinks De Jong is the only midfielder capable of playing his style then he is an even bigger idiot than Mourinho and Moyes.

It is ridiculous how we bend over for anything manager asks.

I get the feeling the martial injury completely ruined his plans.
Eriksen as a false 9 wtf is that????
We played better in the 2nd half as we actually had a focal point not because ronaldo was great.
Concerning that ETH thought that his plan would fly.
Also I was expecting to see a coordinated press and yet again it was ones and twos and easily passed around. Don’t get me wrong Brighton can keep the ball but they are hardly peps city.
Lots of work to do and that was an atrocious start

Disastrous start.

Brighton H Lost
Brentford A
Liverpool H
Southampton A
Leicester A
Arsenal H
Palace A

That next 6 fixture list looks a nightmare for this squad. Good chance he won't have a win from the first 7 games.

I'm not sure if we can pick up any wins.

Brighton H Lost
Brentford A (Draw)
Liverpool H (Heavy Loss)
Southampton A (Draw)
Leicester A (Draw)
Arsenal H (Loss)
Palace A (Loss)

1 player.

Martinez

This myth has to stop.

You can’t count Eriksen because he only trained with Ajax for a few months.
Targeted an Ajax defender, and when he couldn't get him he went for another Ajax defender.

Wanted/wants Antony.

Bought a former Ajax player who trained with his team in the autumn.

Wants one of his former Ajax players (De Jong).

Bought a left-back he knew from the Eredivisie.

By reliable accounts he was or is interested in Brobbey and 33-year-old Arnautovic.

You can say it's not a problem but how can you honestly say it's a myth.

All you moaners do not deserve any success. A manager has played one match and you want him out. feck this environment that you’ve created.

Martinez

This myth has to stop.

We’ve bid for Arnoutovich….he wants FDJ and he’s obviously played against Malacia. He’s signed Martinez and trained with Eriksen….every single player is connected

We’d have Anthony and Brobbey as well if it was up to him

Ronaldo won’t be a guaranteed starter this season. We are addressing the squad depth issue. Being patient is the best we should do. ETH needs us back him. I am sure he won’t abandon his idea and concept no matter what.
