Eric "Ezza" ten Hag signs new contract (until June 2026)

First Team Manager, there was talk his title would be changed to Head Coach in his new deal
In Japanese porn, the Head Coach tends to be the bald guy and the Team Manager the one that gets… I may have said too much

Great news I think. I'm a little surprised they just exercised the option for the extra year and didn't redefine his role, but then again why would he need to agree to that? This way it gives him longer to prove he can do better under their structure than what he was doing. Freshening up the coaching staff in the process with some big names. It also maybe gives him time to be convinced by them, after which he will hopefully get a proper new contract where he may give up more transfer power to them etc if he has trust in them.

All things considered it's a thumbs up from me. Parts of last year were awful and he has some blame but there were also valid excuses too. Those run out with this extension and it's sink or swim time. I'm much happier to stick with Erik than any of the proposed alternatives.

The one thing I want to see from him above all else, is increased flexibility. Seemingly we did poorly last because he didn't have the players to play the way he wanted to. However I think we can all agree we should have better results despite that, and some of the games towards the end of the season backed up theory that we could have performed better than we actually did if we had made some tactical adjustments.

Awww, so definitely no Southgate then?

Was looking forward to there being a new level below Hell.

Don't worry Lambs, we're giving Southgate some time after the Euros for a few holidays before sacking Ten Hag in December and appointing Southgate at Christmas. :)

On a serious tone, I don't overly mind this. Shouldn't make it too expensive to get rid of Ten Hag if we need too. I don't overly see why we needed to give him a new contract, but we aren't privy to the fine details. Hopefully no more excuses from Ten Hag, either he makes is better in the league or he's out. We shouldn't be content with being a cup team.

I'm guessing it's to strengthen his leadership of the team if they are intending on backing him. Just sends the message out to the players.

And also won't cost so much if/when we are still shite come Christmas.

Ten Hag is at the forefront of a crucial culture shift and a new era at Man Utd. It's amusing to see some United fans on this forum get upset. Go get 'em, Erik.

Better than 3 at least. INEOS obviously not completely sure about him.

1 year extension is sensible, retaining his veto not so much. But if it's that, or give him a 3+ year deal then it's definitely preferable. Gives him incentive to really perform, confirmation we aren't happy with last season.

This is nothing not even worth announcing . We had an option from when he originally signed. We've just taken that option.

Gives INEOS time to find the man they want and gives ETH time to find form.

My prediction.

Gone by Xmas.
Your tagline  . Well deserved sir, congrats.

I would’ve gone for Tuchel personally.

I would’ve just activated his 12 month extension and given him 10 PL games to see if he’s implemented a positive and fluid style of play.

I think Tuchel would have fallen out with people in the club sooner than later.

What kind of signal does that send to the players that you talk to other managers and then do not back the manager with a extension and only have 1 year left? does not show confidence in him and undermines ETH.

Quite a few of those, weird comment in a season that so many managers are moving around.

Like who? even if there are managers in the market does not mean they fit into the club or vision.

The club talked to many of them and apparently did not impress the board.

Who then?
Poch, De Zerbi, Tuchel, you name one.

Ten Hag is the ultimate "benefit of the doubt" choice here, I don't claim he's worse then that bunch but it's not obvious he's a better one either. It's just he was given another chance, I wouldn't look too much into it.

Extending his contract was the right thing to do to reinforce his position (a natural consequence of not sacking him in the summer), but that doesn't mean he won't be cut loose if the team still isn't showing any signs of progress in his 3rd season, let alone last season shitshow.

True, but the reason the club talked to other managers is because ETH didn't impress them in the first place. Like I said, ultimate "benefit of the doubt" manager.

So we’ve effectively only activated the year extension, but probably with some revised terms as well.

Probably means we will pay him slightly more to get rid if he fails this season but doesn’t seem likely to cost us too much.

Once it was decided he was staying, this was a sensible move. Would have been too much of a distraction to let him go into the final year. Seems clear now that he has one more season to prove he's the right man for the long-term.

Good deal, he either proves himself or if not it won`t cost us too much to get rid. I hope he can turn things around though.

For those surprised about him still keeping the veto, it was always unlikely that it would be removed. Ashworth has talked about his set-ups at previous clubs and that he'd never sign a player that the manager actively didn't want, and it just makes sense.

However, if ETH exercises the veto he'll be expected to have a damn good reason for it. If it's felt that he's abusing that power then it'll be a black mark against him in the eyes of Berrada, Ashworth, etc, and could be the final straw in sacking him if he's not performing above expectations.

He won't be relied on to choose player targets as much as he previously was (where it appears he was the main guy), but he'll still be involved in the decision making.

This makes sense. Prevents him becoming a lame duck manager, without us comiting long term.

Finally some stability management wise instead of the usual manager merry go round and the players renewing contracts with 325k weekly salaries.

Hope ETH and United have a great season and he sticks around for some years.

Yeah I like this too

Wasn't a standout candidate this summer. I understand the doubt around Tuchel. So this way they can keep him for now, show commitment but not tie their hands together in the event that next season starts as poorly as the last one.

look what happens when people vote labour.

I've made my thoughts known, rewarding the manager who oversaw the most tactically clueless football and worst league campaign in my lifetime is shocking.

Still is what it is so we have to draw a line under it and hope he proves to be the manager we were excited about when he signed.

Same.
Also the condition that the club is only allowed to sign players that are either Dutch, played for Ajax, played in the Eredivisie or ideally all three, is a bit odd, imo.

No worries, with him having a veto we will never go for any player without a Dutch/Ajax connection

Think they realise Tuchel can become a problem, Poch has just been sacked at Chelsea and might not like what the setup could become, Di Zerbi has gone to the powerhouse that is Marseille.

Keeping him doesn't make sense. So, no.
It doesn't, I agree. But a 2 year contract after deciding to keep him makes more sense than 4-6 year contract which would have been given under the previous regime.

Still think that he'll be sacked by Christmas.
