Rojo and Jones are (currently) both better than him though...
Jones I agree with, Rojo not so much. Jones has had plenty of time to establish himself at United and for one reason or another has failed to do so. That's why I would keep Bailly, I think when Bailly is in form he's a better defender than Jones however he's too inconsistent.

He will come back to be a great CB. The weird RB experiment was a flop and part of that should be blamed on Ole and the coaching staff ( am I allowed to say that :nono:).
Dont write him off yet though, he has some great potential and if we could afford to give hime a run of 3 or 4 games I think he can match or exceed thst esrly potential he showed when he 1st joined us. I think he suffered badly under Mou, he was hsuled off twice before half time if I recall correctly. That will affect a young mans man's confidence. Surely has to still be above Jones in the pecking order.

When has Bailly ever been in form?

When has Bailly ever been in form?
The back end of 2016/17 season when he struck a solid partnership with Rojo. something happened since then but there's more potential that we can still unlock. however i think the manager trusts the English guys more and bailly will be sold in the summer if we got a new CB.

Jones is a far far better defender. It's not even debatable. I want Jones gone but compared to this guy, Jones has the defensive intelligence of prime Baresi. Not seen a CB so prone to lapses in concentration at this club, like this guy. At the moment he's a liability and he has to shape up or ship out.

What he lacks isn’t technical ability of defending, not his physical attributes aggression and pace. He actually got all of those, but he lacks a football brain. It’s something that you need to have to play in a top club and it’s not something that you can obtain by training, it’s something you can only improve by learning in your experiences. It’s been almost 3 years and it doesn’t seems that he has taken lessons of how to use his brain when defending.

Against PSG sums up of him, poor positioning, lack of communication with his teammates, lost his man multiple times (no awareness), and injured.

He played at RB under Mourinho before, and while it's clearly not his best position, it wasn't like he was asked to play there for the first time in his life. When he plays centrally, he has a tendency to switch off and either lose his man, or mess up the offside trap. The worrying thing is that he has been regressing rather than improving since his impressive debut season.

He's just not very good is he? Aside from some good form in his first season what has he actually shown?

All physique and no mental means he can't be relied upon. Needs shipping this summer.

People still seem to have some confusion about what position Bailly was playing. I'm sure Bailly is one of those people.

However this is our average positions from the PSG match and I think it shows that he was mainly in a 3 man CB position only slightly wider than Lindelof was towards leftback.

I havent seen anyone suggesting Lindelof played leftback...

After Young had no help with Di Maria and Bernat doubling up down the left wing several times for a 20 minute period where Bernat scored 1 and had another shot straight at De Gea, I remember Young screaming and pointing Bailly out to the right when the Bernat overlap past Di Maria was happening after that point.

Bailly did indeed come out and mark Bernat a few times before being subbed.

I dont know if Bailly was supposed to be doing that all along or if Young, as captain, instructed Bailly to go out there because we'd already been punished heavily for Young having a lack of support from the 2 inside right players - McTominay and Bailly were closest to help. And whatever we were doing wasnt working.

Bernat's 2nd attempt was on the 20th minute, Di Maria had 1 shot from the left and won a corner on that side and soon after Bailly was subbed on the 36th min

He played RB for Villarreal on occasion as well, it isnt a foreign position to him

I think he did not understand the tactics and formation very well, additionally, DI Maria was too much for him, but Bailey and Sanchez are the only two players whose play have been poor under Ole.

I still want to see him as DM. Just like Jones was tried there by SAF.

It was 442 in defense and 352 in attacking phases . Thing is Bailly was all I've the place and was acting like the only one that wasn't drilled in the shape.

It's a shame he had such a poor game at right back. Young has looked more and more defensively suspect in recent weeks and it's a bit early for Dalot to be first choice there.

A defensively solid player at right back who can also play at centre back would be a really good squad option. Bailly's chances of filling that role died a death in Paris.

Stop this myth please. Because he has pace and is strong he can play DM? DM is even more challenging than the CB position when is comes to positioning...

He aint a DM at all!

Mangala has more defensive nous.

This is one of the worst criticisms you can throw at Bailly

I will never be swayed by the sheep who say he is better than Smalling. He needs to prove a lot.

Help me to confirm my understanding because someone said otherwise. My reading of the game was that we played 3 CB with Young as wing back, your graph confirm my reading as 343. So Bailly wasn't playing as RB, but a RHS CB instead. Problem was between him and Young that either he forgot to mark Di Maria as his original instruction, or he thinks this is not his primary duty to move outside the box.

I think this is mental to be honest. Any defender who just switches off the way he did twice for the goal just doesn't have it. It's nothing to do with confidence or the position he's playing in.

It's a fundamental lack of defensive instincts. Put anyone who's ever played football at any level into that scenario and they'd be looking to see where the danger is and trying to get the ball out of there at the first opportunity. They would not just assume no attackers were around and let the ball run across the goal. No defender of any description would ever do that.

I'd be shocked if Bailly is in Ole's long term plans. All he's done for him so far is get himself sent off in a game we were easily winning during an injury crisis and handing PSG basically the same goal in both legs. How could he possibly trust him? How can his team mates rely on him. You could see the relief flow through the side the second he went off.

playing out of position does not mean he can be lazy , all he had to do is run (don't casually walk) out for the offside line like the other 3 defenders and we get the clean sheet

And maybe the sequence of events that lead to our 2nd and 3rd goal is completely altered

I dont know what he was told to do. All I know is what I saw on the pitch, was that he most certainly was not in a RB position helping Young for the first 20 minutes. I definitely saw Young pointing to a wider player, probably Bernat who was constantly overlapping and Young communicating with Bailly to go out and deal with that after the 20 mins.

Whether that was the plan all along and Bailly just didnt bother for 20 minutes, or Young made a captains call during the game and sent him out there because he was frustrated by a lack of help when he was getting 2 vs 1 and we were suffering for it, I have no idea.

But either way for 10-15 mins Young wanted Bailly to mark the overlap towards the right back position while Young confronted Di Maria on the left side. It isnt necessarily playing Right Back, but it was doing what the Right Back would be expected to do in that short period. And then he was subbed out after that short time.

Very dissapointed with this guy. He was fantastic in his 1st season before going to the nations cup, and ever since then he's constantly injured and massively inconsistent with his positioning and awareness.

How do you know, chief? You've never seen players better when trying in different positions?

His passing and distribution is shite for starters. That’s before even talking about how he switches off and is rash in defence.

I think passing is one of his strongest point. Agreed about he switches off. That's why it's even worse to have him in defence (for now).

He is ok handling the ball. His distribution is nowhere near good enough though to play in midfield.

You need brain to play as DM, know when to step out , know where to cut opposition passing lane. He doesn't have brain to begin with.
