Not sure I agree with the posts saying he was good. Thought he could have done better with the second goal too

I'm pretty certain that if Smalling is in there he would've covered that second goal. But then obviously you lose the ball-playing ability so we lose out on that sense.

I like Bailly's effort but defensively he's never really struck me as being top top level. A lack of awareness and rashness a lot of times.

I must have been watching a different game if people think he did well. He's even less reliable than Phil Jones.

Solely responsible for Mbappe's goal.

Agree.

He makes positional errors that you realise on replays and analysis so often. Gets caught flat footed as well.

Yeah, and Di Maria putting in inch perfect cross is practically the same as Mata hoofing crosses and Lingard not being able to convert a proper forward pass.

Has nothing to do with that, his defending was garbage for the goal. He is ball watching instead of running towards the goal with Mbappe behind him. Last ditch tackle makes it look like it was impossible. It was a good pass by Di Maria, but a good defender clears that. Bailly isnt a good defender.
Biggest difference between Bailly and Silva tonight is that one played against Mbappe and one against Rashford.

Still doesnt mean Bailly couldnt have done better. I mean thats the standard we want to reach.
Silva didn't have to defend a single dangerous cross where an attacker was in a position to score.

Every ball him and Kimpembe cleared was from a hit and hope.

I disagree, we barely had a shot on target. Silva was impeccable defensively, proper defender and leader. He was already there where the ball was coming.

Bailly isn't much of a passer really. Smalling would have been a better choice tonight.

Shocking for their second. He really isnt a good defender. We need to sign another this summer thats considerably better than Bailly and Rojo.

An athlete but lacks the judgement and positioning of a top centre back. So often his body is in a strange shape because he doesn't set himself well. He's a faster Phil Jones in many respects. A gem that needs LOTS of polishing.

If he was garbage where were the other defenders? Mbappe was behind Bailly while Lindelof was watching him all the way into the box, where was he?

What?

He staggered his run for no reason when Mbappe had put on his afterburners.

Bailly I'd quick himself and had a starting advantage over Mbappe who was the only runner the 2 CBS had to track. He should have easily spotten the danger and cut off the cross. He couldn't even get a toe in at the end.

He staggered his run because Mbappe was well behind him and there was a big chance of a cut back, he couldn't run too far ahead of him. By the time Di Maria played the cross Mbappe was at full speed and Bailly had no chance.

The better CB tonight. Bailly should run out to try and close off for the 2nd goal. The second that pass went to the left flank with no man for lindelof to mark he Lindelofs man. A better CB would have known Bailly would assist Young.

I am pretty sure his career will be a bigger disappointment than Jones'. As soon as I saw Mbappe accelerating I knew he will run behind, he is simply too stupid to be a good centreback. He also has a habbit of giving the ball away in his half quite a lot for a centreback who is apparently good with the ball.

Meh, Lindelöf cant get ahead of Mbappe, he isnt that fast. Bailly is the one who is better positioned and he could have cut it out, he is in front of him and only needs to make a run, but since he is sleeping and has no awareness, he wasnt in a position to clear it. Lindelöf isnt a top CB either, but Bailly is just not reliable. I would have said the same for Jones. Going by the performances this season, no surprise really. He has been a liability most of the time he played anyway.

This game day reaction is basically one end or the other
Thought he did well, and wouldn't put that much blame on him for their second. It wasn't a glaring mistake and one that people only criticise having seen the replays

Comical that people are trying to scapegoat him. Dude had a solid performance.

Yeah Lindelof isn’t fast enough and let’s put the blame on Bailly, when Bailly was the one being exposed by an attacker running in from behind to finish a ball Young wasn’t able to prevent, in the meantime the CB who should have followed through with Mbappe gets the easy ride.

I personally think all 3 of them could have gone better for a very good ball to a nightmare of an attacker. Lindelof and Young more so than Bailly.

Silva standard is not anything to aim for, very overrated by many. Often shaky in important matches. Good positioning and good in the air, but nothing spectacular.

I think he was partly responsible for Young's yellow too iirc. Followed Mbappe all the way into their half and got left behind - something he is usually very prone to.
His positioning and awareness is really poor, he lacks composure and concentration and his ball-playing is not really good enough to compensate. He's got a lot of weaknesses, is generally an unconvincing defender and I don't even know what he is supposed to be good at.
He has got a long way to go, but he was not bad today.

That’s poor defending because there is only one place that ball is going and any top defender should know that. I could understand the stutter if they were deeper in the box waiting for a cut back but they weren’t and he knew Mbappe was on the run as personally the first part of it he does wel, he’s given himself the space and has started the sprint quite early, Mbappe just has ridiculous speed and that combined with the slight pause and a good ball has led to that goal.

I don’t think his performance was bad, he was alright even if he did get pulled out of position quite easily or be over eager to try and win it and go too far, but except that one stutter he was decent.

How did Kimpembe look tonight? Scored but could easily have been sent off twice, was harried off the ball, walked past with ridiculous ease by Pogba and generally looked an accident waiting to happen.

Bailly did ok, a few small errors here and there, some good moments.

Top 5 CB in the world is nothing to aim for? Thats news to me. If anyhting, he is underrated. Leading a defense of Kimpembe, Bernat and Kehrer isnt easy., but he bossed it.

I have probably seen 150+ matches with Silva and can tell you he is not a top5 CB. He is well known to break down under pressure, that is his biggest issue.

You only need to see the reaction from Lindelof on the 2nd goal to see what he thought of Bailly's staggered run.

Other than that, was ok. Like many of his team mates, nowhere near the finished article and just all round lack of experience. That's not a slight on him but still, it just shows how far behind the development of our players are.

Ive watched the goal like 20 times now, Bailly never once looks to see where Mbappe is. The stutter he does basically makes the goal. If he continues at the speed he is running, he stops the goal.

First I thought he had no chance and that he stopped to see where Mbappe were running. but now after I have seen it a few more times I totally agree. Dont think there were much else Lindelof could have done either. Maybe shut down his run but then he would have risked penalty or/ card.

He is far too instinctive for a defender. He normally acts upon the last moments of an attack rather than being able to read the opposition's attack or game plan earlier on.

I saw him today dragged all the way to LB and to the other side at RB simply by following the football rather than standing his ground & reading the game or the movement of the players instead.

He is not going to be good enough for us in a back 4; the only role I can see him filling is as a last ditch sweeper in a back 3 with defenders like Lindelöf & De ligt either side of him.

I had hopes for him but the way he defends makes our defensive line look fragile. Nothing defensively ever looks set in stone.

He is considered one of the best CBs in his generation by people who actually understand football.

Being considered to be one of the best CBs in his generation is part of being overrated.
Again, his biggest issue is his poor nerves. Refused to take a penalties in shootouts, despite being captain. Has cost his team when everything is at stake, taken stupid yellow cards, and I will never forget the stupid penalty against Chelsea. He is good in the French league, no doubt, but I have seen him break down under pressure many times.

This is rubbish, he's been the best defender of the decade... easily at that.

It’s crazy how so few people can see how much of a liability he is - he’s AWOL for goals in practically every goal he plays. Lacks defensive intellect - he might be useful running about in midfield but he’s pure chaos in defence.

Pogba lost the ball in the lead up. But yea he was two yards ahead of mbappe and should have cleared that ball.

Inches.
