Television Entourage

Yeah but Ari is a protagonist, he doesn't get shot in the end. In Django the slavers are the bad guys and they get it in the end. We're supposed to like Ari.
I don't remember seeing it that way. It's not a show with good or bad guys just a story about how things go in an actor's career. I saw Ari as a shrewd scumbag agent who'd go to any limit to make money or get the deal he wants. Which is kinda what the average film agent according to the writers would be.

Ari also had moments thrown in that tried to show him to be a decent guy beneath the insults and bravado. Like when he initially basically pimped out Lloyd but then couldn’t live with it so went and “rescued” him, and a few other things I can’t immediately think of.

He was definitely a douche but they threw enough little hints of something else in to kind of salvage him.

From what I remember anyway, it’s been a long time since I watched it, may give it another go.

Ari was definitely a protagonist, along with the boys and Loyd.

I mean they showed that character standing at someone's funeral cursing the dead body and already plotting his next move. What was pretty clear was that they wrote him as utterly classless and being offensive about Lloyd's sexual orientation falls in line with that. I wouldn't be classing that writing as problematic if I watched it currently.

It didn't age very well, I'll be honest.

God fecking awful. I tried rewatching it a few years back. Vincent Chase and his douchebag friends are a bunch of wholly unlikable, annoying, self-important wankers.

Ari Gold/Piven is entertaining, but that's about it.

I'm not saying it's a problem for the series. It's the exact opposite, Ari and Loyd are basically the only things making it watchable.

Ari is brilliant. Yes he would probably be rather tonedeaf if it came out now, but meh. I rewatched it last year and he made me laugh.

Also Adrian Grenier is one of the most impressive charisma blackholes of all time. He's so shit, he should receive an Oscar for it.

He's a pretty rotten human being in real life. Can't stand this show for a few reasons but making that guy a protagonist is one of them.

I must say, I have no idea who Jeremy Piven is in real life. If he's like Ari, I can imagine he's a cnut. And yet, Ari was hilarious to me.

Casting such a terrible actor as the actor on the show was hilarious.

It's a great show, I've watched it back to back a couple of times over the years and always enjoyed it, except for the last season which was shite

In absolution yes but for example the stuff Ari says to Lloyd can be looked at more as a reflection of the kind of language that was commonplace in that industry at the time. Kinda like slavers using the n word in Django or whatever.
It's meant to be a satire of the movie industry though.

I meant the real life Ari Emmanuel being a rotten human.

Don't know about Ari Emanuel, but Jeremy Piven has been accused of sexual assault by several women. But who hasn't these days.

The wife wanted to watch this after the 2 episodes we caught the other day so we just started season 1. Enjoying it so far

I don't see any issue with how it's aged. It was always vulgar and ignorant. Partially because that's a reflection of the world it portrays, and partially because it's main target demographic was young to middle aged men.

Still one of the most entertaining shows I've ever watched, and one I throw on every now and again when I've nothing else to watch. Despite it's subject matter there's plenty of strong character development and charisma across the cast (I know some people really dislike Adrian Grenier but I was always able to buy into him as Vince).

I didn’t get the hype when i first saw it when i was in college. As I’ve gotten older i really like it now. It’s just fun entertainment. I like seeing all the celebrity cameos and all the hot girls. And Ari was a brilliant character.

That's easy. He's a bad actor playing a bad actor. Contrast that with Kevin Dillon, who is a decent actor playing a bad actor.

I guess his ineptitude fit the character well enough for me to not notice him actually being a bad actor  I certainly wouldn't be dying on any hill claiming that he anything special. He just seemed to fit Vince as a "nice guy who tends to have nice things fall into his lap and is mostly not a jerk about it".
