English & Irish Cricket Summer 2018

More seriously, Stokes is a prick and the English public doesn't like pricks even (or especially) when they're talented.

They all seem like pricks though  the only regulars in the test team who seem like okay guys are cook, root and jimmy. The rest of them always give off the vibe of being dicks  that’s my impression anyway.

Used to be true (and Jimmy used to be one of the worst offenders), but I don't think this team is particularly unlikeable: Rashid is loveably dozy, Woakes seems lovely and Buttler comes across as incredibly mild mannered. Bairstow seems nice enough despite his questionable method of greeting people.

But yeah, most sportsman are wankers so standing out as a wankers probably means you're a prize twat. I hear Duckett is supposed to be an absolute knobhead from those that know him from his younger days.

Was going to say exactly this. Red haired Jimmy seemed like an utter twat.

There are rumours Cook may be on paternity leave next test.

So assuming they were going to drop Jennings, does he get a stay of execution or do you make two changes?

Can we consider Sri Lanka as abroad or just extension of Chennai?

India won 3-0 in Sri Lanka.

With Bairstow injured, Jennings out of form and Cook rumoured to be taking paternity leave, looks like we'll have to make at least two changes to the batting lineup.

Would guess that Burns is a shoo-in for the opening role, but we'll need to find someone for the middle order.

Might it be worth bringing back Ian Bell? He tailed off dramatically before he was dropped, but he's been in good form this year and is hugely experienced. We've already got one kid in the middle order, so seems very risky to bring in another one at this stage.

It will be a big win for India and will make the series much more interesting. Still feel we should have won the first test but I wouldn't write india off in making an incredible comeback and draw or even win the series.

I really hope not. He vastly overstayed his welcome anyway and his test returns (and first class form generally) have been pretty poor for near enough a decade now. Don't see where he fits in unless you admit Root at 3 is a mistake, and if you do I think Vince was harshly dropped and has made a strong case for a recall.

If you're finding two openers then Burns and Gubbins maybe, but he's another specialist batsman with a sub 40 average.

He got three centuries in the Ashes five years ago! And he played his best cricket between summer 2009 and end 2011, during which time he averaged about 50. So the timeframe needs a bit of work.

Do agree he's been poor for the last three years, really poor. He was a walking wicket when England dropped him. But he's come back well this year and surely it's a better option than throwing Vince to the wolves again.

Agree with you on Gubbins, he's earned a chance.

No it looks wide open now, doesn't it.

Hopefully Stokes and Buttler can at least provide some entertainment this afternoon. But more likely they'll just poke around and nick off.

Yeah, but that series is a huge anomaly in his stats. He averaged 30 odd for the two to three years before it, averaged 30 odd after it and in his last two years in test cricket averaged closer to 15 or 20 (I can't be bothered to look the stats up again, but they're on cricinfo).

He's having a good season, but it's his first in a long time and at 36 it's just a backwards step.

Easily see them seeing the day out with the target being less than 250 by the end of the day's play. Play out the 1st hour tomorrow and they can chase down the target. Anything around 250 can be chased on the last day.
Would be the greatest chase in the history of test cricket

Shami has been garbage.

Buttler has been incredible. Dangerous signs for India.

Very well played Buttler. Let’s see if he can keep going...

Let's see if the English commentators mention the drop catch as many times they've mentioned it for Kohli since the first test.

Nah I know India, we have an habit of giving it away.
Well that's South Africa and even then no one gives this away. India should win by 200 odd runs. Get one of these out and the rest will follow.

There's already two instances I remember. A test match against Saffers where bad light and a test match against NZ where McCullum scored a tripe century.
