English & Irish Cricket Summer 2018

Yeah I know, he's very valuable already but I don't mind them bringing him along gradually, still could fill out a little bit and add a few mph to his bowling.

I agree, I'm not a huge fan of him still despite his impressive enough start for similar reasons (and think he gets too much swing too early), but it's hard to deny he's caused problems and these condidtions are ideal for him. Gives a bit more variety to the attack too.

I’m not saying this because it would have got Kohli’s wicket, but if I could change 1 rule it would be it doesn’t matter where the ball pitches or hits the batsman if it’s going to smash into the stumps then it’s out.
A 2nd rule would be you can’t be stumped on a wide

Definitely need the pitching outside leg law otherwise teams would pack the leg side field and bowl at peoples pads until one got through, and no one wants to watch that.

Looks like it’s gonna turn into a Kohli vs England innings again.

Great average though, just shy of 50 but only around 26 in England.

It's weird, technically, he should be our best player in these conditions but he's been really poor since our tour of SA in 13/14 where he looked a class above the rest.

He's too passive for me. He simply looks to survive rather than score runs. He can dead beat the ball in swinging conditions for hours, but eventually you'll get a jaffa and your 17 off 105 is worth just as much as an edgy 17 off 10. You need to be compact but proactive, but the bad ball away, look to block into gaps and run well (lol) to put pressure on the fielding side.

You don't wanna go too far the other way, but if you keep the scoreboard moving and start to look to actual put on runs you force the opposition to react and move fielders. England (and even county sides) I don't think think Pujara is good enough to hurt them in these conditions so they just set him attacking fields, bowl a nagging line and wait for a mistake or unplayable ball.

One thing I'll never understand about Test cricket is the wide down the leg side. How on earth was that a bye? No chance for Kohli to hit it and Bairstow to catch it.

Great attempt by Anderson.

I think our crap batting in the first two matches prompted Root's decision to bowl first. This pitch is pretty much the basic bat first pitch..

That plus Broad & Anderson's records here and the clouds. However the pitch is slow as expected, bat first and try to create scoreboard pressure. This test match will probably meander but I wouldn't fancy facing Ashwin on Day 4/5 here.

As a slight aside, is this basically saying we don't think we can win here so we won't send our veterans?

England are considering leaving James Anderson and Stuart Broad out of the squad that will tour Sri Lanka later in the year.

Although there is little doubt that Anderson, in particular, remains England's best bowler, it is understood the England management are aware of the need for succession planning and may use the three-Test series in Sri Lanka to explore their options. Anderson and Broad have taken the new ball together for more than a decade and are the two highest wicket-takers in England's Test history.

Of all the places I feel you are going to learn nothing about your fast bowlers, Sri Lanka is up there. Be interesting to see if Ali, Rashid and Leach all play.

Oh man, Rahane. Threw away his wicket after doing the hardwork. Century was there for the taking.

feck sakes, good ball but gutted.

Delighted for Rashid. Feel sorry for Kohli and Rahane, both batted really well only to miss out on centuries.

307-6 is pretty even. This pitch looks likely to offer turn so we (hopefully) look to be in a very, very good position.

Pandya's wicket tilts the day towards England imo. Would have taken 350/6, but Pandya played a bizarre innings here.

Thought he played well and probably would have been more aggressive tomorrow. As it happens, 18 off 57 isnt that great considering we had a run rate of 3.5 for most of the innings.
