English & Irish Cricket Summer 2018

Sounds like Stokes shouldn't have been charged at all, absolute waste of time and money from the CPS.

Again when you knock someone unconcious who is offering no threat to you at all and backing away from you . It's assault it's criminal and there is no defence or excuse

They're all feckers. Although, if the above video is true, then Stokes shouldnt be charged.

Surely Buttler goes out for the next test, he's not a better batsman than Stokes and he's not keeping. Not to mention Curran and Woakes are in better nick with the bat. The England team is gonna just be wicket-keepers and all-rounders eventually.

Nah Buttler is one of our talented batsmen and they clearly want him for the long haul.

I'd be tempted to drop Broad. I know it's his home ground and he bowled well at Lord's but all the other bowlers have taken wickets and both Curran and Woakes have been brilliant. Suspect it will be Curran who steps down though.

Hopefully Stokes stops being a helmet and wishes up. He could be one of our all-time greats if he screws his head on. He's come out of this really badly but i guess it's foolish to judge sportsmen on their character.

Buttler is a special special talent so I'm okay with giving him all the chances in the world to cement himself in the test team.

Why not just give Buttler a go as an opener? Surely can't be any worse than the losers they've been trying out since Strauss retired. Curran/Woakes don't deserve to be dropped and Buttler should never be axed before the flop Jennings.

Wonder if they’d lose Rashid
Didn’t bat or bowl

Will depend on the pitch and conditions, could be Woakes as well, not wanting to rush him back with two tests so close.

That's a good shout, he's barely turned his arm over in 2 matches and India have shown their vulnerability to a seaming/swinging ball.

Not sure you should drop a spinner as a bit of variation is necessary particularly if the ball doesn't swing.

Think Curran will be dropped, only 20 and it's a bit much anyway to play 3 Test matches in a row.

Aye, I'd rather have Rashid and not need him than need him and not have him.

I'm certain Stokes has chucked down a few overs of spin for England in the past. So there we go, select Stokes as a specialist spinner and problem solved.

If you look back over England's performances at Trent Bridge, the defeat last year to South Africa was our first there since 2007.

I've looked back over the last few Tests played there and the spinners have had little to no impact. Remember 3 years ago when we blew Australia away for 60 in the first innings.... it was all about the pace bowling.

In my mind there is absolutely no doubt - we do not need Rashid to win this Test. I don't think he should have been in the squad in the first place and nothing has happened to make me think he should have a place in the XI over Stokes, who will be absolutely buzzing following the not guilty finding yesterday.

We probably don't need Rashid but it would probably help. Apart from that Ashes test where Broad got an 8 for, English spinners have tended to get around 4 wickets per match at Trent Bridge in the last few tests so clearly they play a supportive role before. It does look like there will be heavy cloud for the first few days in Nottingham

Anyway I reckon Stokes will come in ahead of Curran anyway.

If the England coaches are smart they'll couch it as rotation, not a dropping. In such a condensed schedule there's no problem giving someone a breather.

Adil Rashid first-class batting average: 33 inc 10 first-class centuries
Chris Woakes first-class batting average: 35 inc 10 first-class centuries
Jos Buttler first-class batting average: 32 inc 4 first-class centuries (Pope's already scored this many 100s and he's 12)

Yes Buttler can do things only a handful of English batsman in the entire history of English cricket could ever imagine of doing but he needs to start delivering on that talent with a pretty substantial innings (or two) at some point. The initial signs vs Pakistan were good, the most recent signs not so much.

True. But he's not going to be able to deliver if we drop him is he?

I'd wait until the end of the series before making that kind of call.

I'd give him the gloves and move Bairstow to 4 personally.

Edit:
I'm saying Buttler must add more value than just a specialist batsman because you can easily argue for playing Woakes/Ali/Rashid over him because they have better first-class records as batsmen.

Agree to a point. Not been the easiest batting conditions this series. They should and will give him time

I’d keep Pope as well. Specialist batsman shouldn’t be replaced by an AR. Do we really need Anderson, Broad, Woakes, Curran, Stokes and Rashid

I’d lose Rashid or Woakes depending on overhead conditions/wicket. Woakes was immense, but no need to rush him back after knee injury. And then he can replace Curran in the 4th test.

Rashid is the obvious if conditions/pitch are helpful to swing

It should be a close game. IIRC our record in Nottingham is really good. Obviously won the ODI there, recently. But going back, we drew the last test match in '14 which we should have won - think Jimmy scored his career best in that match. Going to 2011, we, again, should have won - Broads hattrick. And, I think we won the 2007 match and series there. Historically, we enjoy the surface however, in the previous three instances, we've had a genuine swing bowler (Bhuvi, Praveen and RP) to exploit the favourable conditions, this year we dont.

It's harsh but I think Curran will miss out. A spinner is always needed unless it's a green top and Woakes/Stokes are more experienced than Curran. The test match against India 4 years ago at Trent Bridge was one of the most boring draws ever. I think they got fined for producing a poor pitch that had nothing in it for bowlers.

My point with respect to Buttler is, he's chosen as a specialist batsman but we could easily play an all-rounder instead and lose nothing in terms of batting. Overall it's a good problem to have and it does mean we can actually rotate the seamers a bit. If England win the next game I suspect Anderson and Broad may be rested in the last two tests.

I concur.

He's pretty inconsistent and he doesn't have a sound enough technique to move up the order IMO. I'm not sure i'd be playing him in the long term unless he's got the gloves on.

The 2014 Trent Bridge pitch against India was fecking awful if I remember correctly. Gave nothing to the bowlers. Similar to the 4th test in the 2012 series England won in india.

Hopefully we don't get anything like that this time.

Yeah the Trent Bridge pitch was weird. We did have England 200-7 though yet somehow Anderson managed a career best 80.

As for the test in India, that was an atrocious pitch at Nagpur.

Should have dropped Rashid since he literally did feck all in the last test, or better - go unchanged because even thought Stokes was found not guilty by the court, it doesn't seem right that he walks straight back in the team. I wonder if the selectors are thinking since the ECB begin their disciplinary process after this test is done, they will pick him as "one of the best players", win the game (and series), then dump him again for the rest of the series. Sounds harsh on Stokes but it's harsher on Curran to have to make way.

Enjoyed this from Jos Buttler's Test Diary on the Sky Sports website:

There are a few weather experts in the dressing room, chiming in on when we'll be getting back out in the middle. Alastair Cook comes in every morning with a report that has been sent to him by Jonathan Trott, a renowned weather watcher.

Good shouts from Trott last test.

This is twice annual test match where Broad and Anderson inexplicably forget they're two of the best bowlers of all times in these conditions and forget to pitch it up.
