English cricket thread

I hope it clears up in enough time for there to be a result.

I have a busy cricketing weekend of Old Trafford on Friday and Bristol on Saturday, hoping for England and Derbyshire wins!!

England need to just formulate this plan: Don't allow for Smith-Labuschange to bat together for too long. That is 75% of the test right there.

Not sure how England will get around these guys? Smith looked boss while he was out there and Labuschagne will get a ton sooner than later.

Was surprised Archer didn’t bowl for longer when Smith came in. Very strange to take him off after just 5 overs.

Looks like the sky's cried itself out now doesn't it. The clouds have cleared after that last shower so will hopefully get some play for the rest of the day.

I'm in the city centre. It's just gone from sunshine, via gale force winds, to pouring down, to dry and brightening up again in the space of half an hour. I think the weather forecast will call it changeable.

I believe Waugh originally posted that picture saying that he'd had lunch with Sir Allan Ferguson. I quite like the idea of him calling Ferguson "Sir Allan" throughout the meal.

Oh aye?

What's the story there?

Waugh found inspiration anywhere he could. When Shoaib Akhtar slyly kicked him during the group game against Pakistan, Waugh felt that warm, familiar feeling of competitive fury and told him that every dog has its day. Pakistan won the game but Australia were starting to rage against the dying of the light. Waugh was alone in a hotel room in Durham with a Coke and a club sandwich when Manchester United, having been outplayed, scored two injury-time goals to win the Champions League final against Bayern Munich - and, with it, an unprecedented treble. "As I watched this stunning fightback I couldn't help thinking that anything is possible in sport and in life, if you want it badly enough and have enough faith in those around you," he wrote in No Regrets. "What we have to do in the World Cup suddenly seems quite simple - go out there, give it a 'red hot go', and trust ourselves."

Can tell you're not from Manchester

It's started raining now at my house and I'm 20 mins away from the ground
I am from Manchester mate! Been away for a while so clearly lost my grasp of local weather :)

If all England can hope for is to take wickets around Smith and let him finish not out then we have no chance of winning the series.

At some point, someone at the other end will dig in too and our batting line-up just isn't good enough to allow them a score over 350 if we want to win this match, especially with the weather forecast.

It's so frustrating to watch as an England fan but on the other hand we are admiring one of the greats of the game at work.

I don't see us winning the series because I don't see us getting Smith out cheaply once never mind twice in a match.

Years ago, I remember watching the U19 world cup (I think), and Steve Smith was a batman who bowled a bit. I distinctly remember being unimpressed with him. Shows what a good judge of a player I am :D

I don't really understand why Khawaja was dropped rather than Wade. I know Wade's got a century, but he just does not look like a test match batsman to me. Dog shit shot that.

He's simply incredible.

Last 8 Ashes scores:

What a player!! Pressure means feck all to him. Brilliant.
