Yeah that tail looks horrible. But it doesn't look like we have much choice. Woakes has been off-colour throughout the series.

If we are going to remove Woakes though (and assuming we don't rush Moeen back ahead of Leach) we're going to need to bat really sensibly aren't we. We can't afford to squander early wickets with such a long tail.

So I'd suggest we bring in Sibley for Roy too.
missed you yesterday! What did you make of it? Did you see it all?

I was on a beach in Catalonia mate, trying desperately to get a signal! Managed to watch most of it on my phone though. Was absolutely incredible. Thought the Aussies would nick it and it would become their version of Edgbaston 05, but thankfully I was wrong as usual :)

I had to go on the underground yesterday when we needed about 13 to win.

Was absolute torture waiting to get my signal back.

Is that current form 2 months? Ridiculous thing to say with people like Kohli, Taylor still playing.

Brilliant innings from Stokes non the less.
Ben Stokes in 2019:
82 vs. Sri Lanka
89 vs. Australia
79 vs. India
84* in the World Cup final
Smashes the Super Over
50 at Edgbaston
100 in the second at Lord's
135* at Headingley

Not sure any other batsman can display similar level stats in past few months! Yeah, I think he is the best batsman in the world on current form.

What's amazing is that all those innings were played under pressure. He's definitely the no. 1 match winner in the world.

were you screaming and jumping up and down on the beach?:lol:

It was even better than the world cup final, because of the way he got those final 74 runs. Incredible range of shots, he was in a space where he could literally make his bat and the ball do exactly what he wanted. I was all over the place in my living room. Was posting and reading on this thread all day, but in the last hour, I put my phone down because I was transfixed. I couldn't move, had to slow my breathing, so I could handle the tension!

There's been some fantastic journalism I've come across this morning, These 2 are worth reading for anyone who wants to re-live the feeling:

Again, that's the last two months. I can admit that he's the best batsman over the last two months, although Steve Smith would also come into the conversation if you've taking such a small time frame.

Comment from that Ben Stokes Tweet..
  • I’ve just uploaded your innings to pornhub xxx - guy fecks eleven Australians

Its while annoying when the commentators talk over the 3rd umpire on reviews

Haha yeah there were some strange looks.

Still think the WC final was better but let's be honest they were both pretty special weren't they .

Watched it in the pub on my phone via sky go. Couldn't even talk to my mate sat next to me. Absolutely transfixed. I watched 1981 but this was exceptional he didn't have a Dilley to accompany him it was a one man show after bairstow played the loose shot.

What makes it different (and better) than Botham's 149* or Laxman's 281, is they were match saving 3rd innings scores. So in a sense, they were a free hit and required Willis and Harbajan to produce career best bowling in 4th innings to win the game.

So then one can compare with Lara's match winning 151* vs Australia. But even there, it's the context of Stokes innings that makes it unique and the very best. Lose the game, and lose the Ashes, and kills interest in the rest of the series, and leaves a sour memory for this summer. Losing would likely precipitate the end of Root's captaincy and require England to completely reboot their test team.

But win, and the series is alive, momentum into final 2 tests (Next up: Anderson to bowl from his end @ Old Trafford with new wingman Archer at opposite end), issues in captaincy and batting order can be swept under carpet for a few more weeks. And also how his innings evolved: the self flagellation in first part of innings, his 'warm up' with Bairstow, and then the graceful violence at the end.

It had it all as a singular piece of sporting narrative.

Great post that. The people I was with hate cricket. Their loss I'm still buzzing now. Redemption for the guy as well after the people he stood up for said it should never have gone to court. He's become a modern day hero I'm gonna rewatch that any time I'm at a loss for something to watch with a glass of wine for a long time. I still can't believe it happened in that manner. When Woakes went and Jofra inevitably holed out it just wasn't seemingly possible.

Ashes learning. Mitchell Johnson and Ricky Ponting are two really decent blokes who just really love their cricket. I always had a soft spot for Ponting for some reason (that innings at Old Trafford in 2005!) but Johnson has caught me off guard this Ashes.

I have zero sympathy for Australia. They loved bullying other nations during the 2000s, now they are crying.
I get the impression that people like Matthew Hayden are quite obnoxious but all the former England players seem to love Warne.

Lyon has been a bit of an arse, like the nerdy kid in school who likes to run his mouth behind the bullies. But you've got to feel for him after yesterday.

Agree completely.

Is he immature though? Seems a bit of a womaniser, for sure, but always comes across as decent and warm when you see him on commentary.

Bookmakers, drugs bans, numerous spats with fellow professionals throughout his career. The last thing Shane Warne should be calling out anyone for is a lack of maturity.

Good. Warne is a legend and Prior is, by all accounts, an utter prick

Warne was a master of ‘mental disintegration’ and took huge pride in his vicious sledging.

Warne was one of founding proponents of the Australian ‘good bloke’ doctrine and mythical ‘line of morals’. Kimber recently wrote a brilliant analysis on this. This one by Bridged Delaney was also excellent.

Good bloke’ theory requires foot soldiers like Lyon to generate quantity of abuse which he has done throughout his career. But it's with the implicit understanding that the alpha's will protect them when they come under fire. One of the other key traits of this cult, is dishing it out aplenty but not being able to take it when it’s returned, even in the mildest of ways, as we've seen from the likes of McGrath, Hayden etc down the years.

Warne is an amazing cricketer, perhaps the best ever, but he was also a complete cnut in terms of sportsmanship. His tweet defending Lyon is him reverting to type. He tries to suppress it post Sandpaper, but he can’t deny these deeply embedded behaviours.

Ponting Has been so good in the commentary box . Doesn't mince his words about anything or suck up to any one. Really great addition to commentary. His stint at the end yesterday was so good even though Australia were losing

Fair enough Sammsky. Guess every single person in this thread will have a different opinion.

To me Warne has always come across as a tough competitor who knew all the tricks but wasn't as boorish or hostile as someone like a Warner. A lot of the England players he played against - Atherton, Hussain, Flintoff etc - seem to hold him in high esteem.

He does come across as a sleaze though, and a relentless self-promoter.

Yeah he's great, just goes to show how lazy someone like Botham is, doesn't it.

Oh I can't stand Warne.

When he's strictly talking about spin bowling or just cricket tactics he's brilliant to listen to, so much knowledge. But anything else he's just a cnut, the way he targeted Cook whilst on commentary in 2013 was disgraceful.

Lyon has said some cnuty things in the past, and I think he deserves all the stick he's getting.

Johnson and Ponting especially have been revelations on commentary though.

Feel sorry for Lyon to be honest. He's clearly tried to play the hard man and it's been an irritating act, but he'll be remembered for this the way Herschelle Gibbs is remembered for dropping Steve Waugh in the 99 World Cup.

This is getting a bit poor from Warne now. After all the comments Lyon has made in the past, he has to expect something back. If you dish it out, expect it back.

Exactly what Prior said in return!

Warne's an idiot for replying, as all is does is fuel the subject and make it bigger. But as I said above, it's 'good bloke' ideology for alpha's to protect an abusing foot soldier.

It's just Warne trying to ramp up the hype I think. The bigger the series, the more media work he gets off the back of it.

Only if they lose the Ashes.
