Woakes man of the series for me. Only played the last three tests but lifted everything anddid the Anderson role with the ball plus contributions with the bat.

Same for me. Huge wickets, top batsmen nearly every time and a crucial knock in the first win with the bat

Broad or Woakes for England yeah.

Tougher to pick one out for Australia, not sure anyone really stands out.

Didnt they give two man of the series one for each team sometime back? I don’t know if I’m imagining this

Fantastic series comes to a fantastic end. Don't think I've been this interested in an Ashes series since 2005.

Weather helped Aussies in the 4th, but it definitely helped England here as well. Without the overcast conditions, and newish ball, Aussies would've likely won this.

Fair drawn series, enthralling cricket from both teams with their contrasting styles.

Some Irish men follow cricket. One of them even captained the English one day team. It’s been a great series. But not a great result for England.

I’m mainly on a WUM here but it is funny to see so many of you trying to talk up what will go down in history as a missed opportunity.

Yes, to a World Cup win! Cheers :).

Will go down in history as a brilliant series that England played the best brand of cricket we've arguably ever seen.

Off for a beer!

Australia winning the Ashes has broken @Utd heap. It’s like that scene where Homer rebuilt Flander’s house.

Considering where the team was 18 months ago, I don’t think you’ll find many England fans complaining about what’s happened against the supposed best team in the world.

I don’t think any English fans will look back on this summer and think of it as a missed opportunity either. It’s been so enjoyable.

it’s great to see Woakes get this. 7-8 years ago I thought he’d have a much better career than the one he’s had. Player of the series in an ashes is stuff for the books

I don’t agree with any of the “moral ashes” stuff (and assume most mentions of that now are tongue in cheek) but both things can be true can’t they? Australia were definitely the favourites coming in as the No1 side in the world, then going 2-0 up. The fact it ended up being a missed opportunity with mainly the Manchester rain preventing an overall win is worth celebrating, especially as I worried the motivation wouldn’t be there for this final game.

Best series I've watched in a long time.

There is something very unique about test cricket that other sports, and even the other formats of cricket, can't match. Not sure what it is but there is something there.

Long live test cricket.

Same, always liked him as a player. Could get into most teams purely as a bowler but it's also a reliable batsman, someone every team would want (including us in Pakistan!).

Also as much as it’s a missed opportunity for us, after being 2-0 up it’s a missed opportunity for the Aussies on a first ashes win here in however long. As great as retaining the ashes is, and it is great, it’s not the same as winning them and that goes for when we’ve done it in the past too

I wish every Ashes was in the UK

The ones down under are a total mismatch and we get hammered. The ones over here are always close and exciting.

Atherton is asking great questions and the answers have been great.

For sure, I’d be gutted not to win in those circumstances. Still, they have the ashes which will help them get over it pretty quickly.

Yea he's great, although his powers lessen when he's out of the UK. He should have been starting for England from the first test.

Such an odd series. Great entertainment but I think both teams sold themselves a little short in the end and 2-2 is what they both deserve  .

At 142-7 in England’s first innings in the 3rd test I was fearing a whitewash FFS

What a wonderful series, what a wonderful format, what a wonderful sport.

Please don't leave Broady. The game needs characters like you.

Moeen officially retires (again)

What a man... Glad he got this series to bow out on, feels like people will give him a little more props that he fully deserves after this.

Same. Embarrassing really isn’t it:lol:

Yeah

The last 20 years the only one that you could call a little dull in terms of the result was 2013 when we beat Australia 3-0 but even then only one of the wins was a hammering, the other two were close, one a tight nailbiter and the other Australia were on course to win until they collapsed on the last day.

Every other UK ashes in the last 20 years has been dead even and could have gone either way. Great entertainment.

What a series that was, even though we didn't win one of the most enjoyable for a long time, its easy to knock Bazball but if you think of where England have come in the last year its been a remarkable turn around from what went prior to this

This list surprises me for some reason.

Top series run-scorers
  • Usman Khawaja - 496
  • Zak Crawley - 480
  • Joe Root - 412
  • Ben Stokes - 405
  • Steve Smith - 373

Broad giving him a hug and letting him share the moment did me in. So sweet. Shame Moeen didn’t have this environment around him 3-4 years earlier.

Aussie media is so pathetic and 3-2 would have been just such a good slap to them. I have looked around and could not find that Brook quote about not caring about winning anywhere. They just completely misquoted him

Yep, that much is obvious.
Missed opportunity maybe, but I can’t remember a team completely changing the way it’s played as much as England have done recently (for the positive)
Kinks to work out definitely but as with ETH, work in progress.

Got his 200th wicket this series as well which is a nice little memory for him too
