English cricket thread

It's mad the difference this match will make to the overall score.

England win and they can probably argue they've been unlucky not to win the Ashes, because of the weather in Manchester.

Lose and Australia take it 3-1 and all of a sudden it looks like a bit of a beating!

Weird feelings of cricket: cricket players who wear glasses are always spinners.

Harry Brooks depending on how he does in India could cement his claim as biggest young talent in world cricket .

Weirdly for an English batter, we shouldnt have too many concerns about him against spin. Unless they prepare those ridiculous pitches again.

There's a few to keep your eye on - Harry Brook, Shubman Gill, and Abdullah Shafique are all making their mark, with Brook probably the stand out presently.

Though it seems he should be fine but Ashvin , Jadeja, Patel should represent great challenge even if We decide to not prepare raging Turner's from day one which I am not fully ruling out at all because lately Indian management has been getting more and more conservative and way England have been playing they might think it's in their best interest to do so but that would be a shame to be honest .

Haven't seen much of Shafique to be honest but Gill so far hasn't been able to put it all together consistently highly talented though wouldn't surprise me at all if he ends being all format great when he ends up his career .

Up hill job now, but this has been the case in pretty much every test so far, big swings in momentum.

Yea Gill burst onto the scene and did exceptionally well in the ODI/T20 formats. I think once he gets more games under his belt, we'll see a real talented opener in test cricket for India.

Shafique is averaging very well (50 in tests) and already has a double century and 3 other centuries in his fledgling test career. Just hope he can keep the consistency up as that's the one thing that always seems to lack with Pakistani batsmen. He's more of a patient player so maybe that'll work in his benefit.

Get 280- 300 runs on the board some how that would be a good total factoring in the conditions and set up this test nicely for England if they can make enough inroads into Aussie's line up today that's assuming conditions will be same through out the day .

None of the “big” batters have turned up this series atall, for either side. Disappointing stuff from Root, Bairstow, Smith and Labuschange all bar one or two innings each.

Root and Bairstow had their best innings when it didn't even matter....

Bairstow has no business being mentioned amongst 'big' batters. Apart from two purple patches he has been an underwhelming test cricketer.

I tend to agree, but he’s in the side for the reason of scoring big is what I meant.

Ridiculous. You would think these guys would be fired up to prove the 4th test was no fluke. Root, Bairstow, Stokes all down without so much as a fight.

Stokes' delivery is fair enough, but both Root and Bairstow dragging on kind of sums up their series sadly.

Gill actually did well in his debut series in test against Australians in Australia but he just hasn't gotten it all together but I think it's matter of time with his talent and how unfortunate is it that it's been so long that India and Pakistan haven't had a test match whole generation of Cricketers denied that opportunity as well general population the spectacle .

Would definitely keep watch on Shafique , from Pakistan I like Babar definitely a future great with plenty of cricket left as well and Shaheen Shah Afridi is some bowler as well , I hope India and Pakistan can resolve their differences and we can get back on field .

One of the greatest test innings I had seen was by Tendulkar in losing cause Against Pakistan in test in Chennai , then there was Sehwag one in Pakistan and how our most recent greats haven't played a single test against Pakistan is so unfortunate . You also must have some memories of India and Pakistan encounters which you remember fondly .
