Test squad for NZ series in February:
Ben Stokes (capt), James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ben Foakes, Will Jacks, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Olly Stone

I like Olly Stone well enough but I think Jamie Overton is just a better all round player, and with a better fitness record too. Just as quick with the ball but not as accurate, better fielder, far better batsman. He's not injured himself is he?

Glad to see Duckett has kept his place though. That talk about whether he would only ever be a sub-continent player after the knocks he made was really strange to me - he's only up against bloody Lees and Crawley FFS for the spot!

Jamie Overton will be a handful on those hard pitches down under and his batting is genuinely that of an all rounder. But in New Zeeland you can understand why England selected Stones and Potts ahead of him as they should be a handful in New Zeeland conditions which have lots of similarities to English conditions.

Wicket maiden for Jofra in his first over back in the new South African T20 tournament.

Quite a few England players involved across the sides. Roy still looks massively out of form though, it's not just the low scores but his strike rate is way down to what you expect from him.

Big news for those of us of a Lancashire persuasion

Indeed mate. I think he'll be brilliant.

In fact I reckon Lancs will benefit from Bazball more than any other county (if we apply it).

We dropped loads of points last season due to dawdling while batting, and the likes of Jennings and Bohannon will have no option but to go for it this year if they want to get in the England team.

Still no second overseas player though...

Anyone watching the SA-England game and worried Archer might have lost a bit of pace? Seems to be bowling high-80s now rather than low-90s.

Could just be easing himself back in though...

Didn't see the SA innings but even with a few T20 games he's still going to be a bit rusty at international level and with a longer format.

Excellent figures for Sam Curran on what seems to be a flat pitch. At the risk of jinxing him, Roy has made a decent start too.

I think England are a batter short with this line up. Not sure about Moeen at 6 with Curran at 7.

He did say he felt "80% fit" so perhaps he is not quite fully there yet. This pitch seems a poor one for proper fast bowlers, might not be worth breaking your back on it.

We’ll probably have a rotating second overseas again, I seem to recall Hasan only being announced just before the season started and he was brilliant. Reckon there’ll be a few Aussies on the edge of the test team looking for a gig, Scott Boland and the likes

Was very unsure of this game but since Jos got going we’ve been batting very well

Jos and Brook were great, Moeen was a good knock and a tremendous cameo from Curran there at the end.

England were very destructive at the end of games when they have the key batters in and it gives the others who then come in a platform to score freely also

Wake up call for England, after Fridays collapse and today they really should be defending 342.

Big players missing but not many games before the world cup to put it right.

T20 has killed the 50 over game.

and there’s the overseas announcement in a… very interesting manner

Was literally about to post the same news mate.

Not massively exciting signings but given how long the IPL will go on for this year, and the fact that Lancs are paying for a new stand, not bad at all really. We'll hopefully have Bailey, Mahmood, Anderson, Williams and Boyden (who they reckon was amazing at the U19 World Cup) available for all or most of the first block of matches, so maybe they felt they don't need any more fast bowlers.

Very interesting that they've essentially signed three overseas players for two slots. Has anyone ever done that before?

They’re not the flashiest signings but both very good players, can certainly help kick on and hopefully finish top of the pile this time. I’m expecting between them two and Vilas we’re likely to have at least one away on another gig for most of the season so probably a shrewd move to not go for the glamorous names.

The excitement was growing anyway and this has definitely added to it

Who could possibly have predicted that players not playing 50-over cricket would lead to the ODI side struggling?

The gap between this format and T20 might be narrowing but it's still there. Brook has played 2 50-over games in 4 years, the last a washout in May 2019. Nowhere near enough.

And then the schedule, it's a WC year so next month's series in Bangladesh is surely important? But the Test players will be in NZ and the likes of Hales, Billings, Dawson and Vince are prioritising the PSL so it'll be another weakened squad.

We do need to get the balance right, something India have sort of figured out.

Not sure I’d agree with that few tests being “getting it right”. It’s still the pinnacle of the game.

EDIT: although granted you seem to have issue with it too based on your wording, unlike the tweeter
Agree - they are called tests for a reason, whilst entertaining T20 and to a lesser extent ODI's are just slog fests with a large element of luck involved

I’m of the view barring the World Cup and maybe warm ups ahead of it. T20 should be just left to the franchises. Bi-laterals are not something that’s needed.

The main part I agreed with is that India are playing more ODIs than anyone

From one of the big 3 point of view I’d agree, does cause major problems for other countries though with tests being prohibitively expensive to host, without the one day series where do they bring the money in?

It’s a very difficult situation to correct (that has almost entirely been brought on by England, India and Australia)

You're right regarding tests for other countries. I'd be stunned if Test cricket is played beyond 6 countries in 10 years time. I just think England ahead of a World Cup year, need to prioritise ODI cricket ahead of anything else.

Anyway Jofra's back! England should have won this series, the way they capitulated in the first ODI was poor

Massive smile on my face watching his last few overs then. An absolute joy when he’s in full flow.

Agreed on the collapse the other day too, should never be losing from that position.

Don't disagree with this. Seems a sensible solution.
