English cricket thread

Talking of pitch deterioration, the pitch today was effectively a Day 3 pitch with the amount of overs bowled on it. It’s been a dry-ish summer without being baking hot too so the pitches just don’t go as much as they might normally do.

Stokes mopping up the India tail in short order after lunch had nothing to do with the ball and was a surprise to most observers.

India could have put an England chase more or less out of their reach, but they gave England a sniff.

Third innings can go like that because it is hard to be sure of what is enough as it is dependent on so many factors.

Still feel this is wide open.

If we can get through the first ten overs tomorrow without losing a wicket then I think we'll win fairly comfortably.

An early wicket and it's all up in the air. Stokes has to reign in his extreme T20 attacking style just a little bit at least

Should be a fun day though.

Every Test this summer:

Eng bowl.
Bowl well.
Oppo middle order featuring the WK pile on a partnership.
England bat.
Stokes out batting like a mad man.
Concede a lead
Oppo on the verge of batting England out of the game.
Collapse unexplainably in a casual fashion.
England turn up to chase it like its a charity match
Bairstow 100
Win.

That’s pretty much spot on. Still, it’s a repeated storyline that I’m happy to get behind!

India have got the ball changed, be interesting to see if that causes anything. Had an impact last time around

England are strolling to a win here - it's so out of place you're just waiting for something to go wrong

How many 100s does Root finish with?

He's on 28.

Potentially hits 40?

Someone mentioned in here a few weeks ago that Root was going to score an insane number of runs over the next few years now he doesn't have to worry about captaincy. He was going to be a great before, but has stepped up another level now.

He's looking so good at the moment that he could break pretty much all records.

Refreshing listening to Pietersen commentary…. bored to death with Atherton and Hossain repetitive droning

What is the story with all the ball changing bollocks going on this summer?

It's every 10 bloody minutes.

The ball manufacturer fecked up, it's a shit batch apparently. Loses shape incredibly quickly.

This is so comfortable it's borderline un-competitive.
Drink it in. What England have done in these four tests is incredible. Very special, indeed. I doubt any side has ever successfully chased four targets like this consecutively.

Now we just need to see what they can do batting first and playing away from home.

I didn't realise that but umpires don't have to change it if it doesn't fit as it's only guidance but they've backed themselves into a corner by changing it too often now. They were pretty outspoken about it in commentary as they reckoned that a ball is designed to change over an innings and by swapping it out the tests were being heavily affected.

If YJB gets his 100 here, that's 4 centuries from 5 innings, with a 71 not out sandwiched in the middle. Could so easily have been 5 in a row, which would have put him tied at the top of the list all time.

It's a freak occurrence, wont be common I dont think.

The umpires are pissed off with it themselves but sounds like no choice currently.

Absolutely spanked them. In hindsight, it would have been interesting to see India have set England 450+!
