English cricket thread

I know the pitch is easy and root Bairstow are special players but barring Bumrah and maybe Shami , this is some horrific bowling display. Very disappointing from Siraj and Jadeja. Couldn't give a feck about shardul as don't rate him anyways.

The obsession to play Shardul should end after this. A mediocre player who should just stick to playing domestic cricket.

Is Jadeja really India's best spin option? I know he's got a good record but in England he looks a bit toothless with his brand of flat, quick spin.

It is Ashwin, but they don't like to play him for some weird reason.

India will come out all guns blazing in the morning. They have shown a few times that when they're up against it then can up the intensity and change the game in a short spell. They've got 10 overs in the morning to do so imo. 10 overs, 40-0 and England will cruise it. However 10 overs, 20-2 and India are favourites.

As an England fan I'd be a lot more confident if we had a Woakes/Curran/Ali coming in at number 8 because its a long tail. Broad can slog it when the pressures off but not someone you want coming in with a tight run chase. One massive benefit to England's scoring rate is that it virtually takes the importance of the new ball out of the occasion. Chasing 380 and must of those runs will be eaten up before 80 overs.

India have thrown a test series win in England in the bin with lazy, complacent batting. Still ended up with a very big total though but England have been far too comfortable and barring a clutter in the first 45 minutes they’ll mop these up easily.

One test wonder. Liked him but he was hyped by shastri. Don't think he would have done any better today.
He's got 26 wickets @ 23. That's a decent start even if he gathered a lot in one game.

I disagree, England struggle more with somebody with guile and variation. Jadeja was offering nothing today bowling at leg stump and not spinning the ball.

What a fantastic days cricket, and what a revelation England’s batting has been this summer. Bairstow & Root have been outstanding, Bairstow finally producing in test cricket against 2 of the best bowling attacks in test cricket. Stokes is a natural born leader and his captaincy has also been outstanding. India are not out of this match by a long way yet, but whatever happens you have give England credit to the way they’re redeeming themselves.

England just need to bat sensibly now. Bairstow, Root, Stokes, Billings and four other bats should be able to score 120 in a day no matter how well India bowls.

This scoring rate also takes the new ball out of the equation.
Depends on keeping wickets in hand. Lose a few, rate will drop and we might end up needing 30-40 after the new ball. Bumrah with the new ball against our tail could easily yield only a handful of runs.

I used to quite enjoy it when he came across as a real winner and super driven.

Looks a bit try hard now.

Yeah I've never been a fan of the way he carries on when he's playing to be honest but you had to respect how ultra talented and competitive he was. He really was an amazing cricketer at his peak.

But he just comes across as a bit pathetic now, desperately trying to stay centre of attention even though he isn't captain anymore and he doesn't score any runs. So to make up for it he's turned the dickhead behaviour up to 11, constantly sledging and screaming and hollering from the slips, getting into arguments with everyone etc.

Does the ball deteriorating quickly have something to do with these ridiculous 4th innings chases? England making them look easy this summer... Its unheard of.

It surely is a big factor. It's the same in domestic 4 day cricket with huge totals being regularly posted by counties.

The standard of the Dukes ball this year has deteriorated significantly. Apparently it is made in India or Pakistan now instead of in England like it used to be.

Almost looks like a mental block was removed. Ever since I've followed Test cricket, 200+ run chases in the fourth innings were always hard. Even with a strong start, there's always a suspicion of one wicket leading to a collapse. If the chasing side slightly ups the scoring rate, bowlers can bowl a run-restricting line and begin to throttle again. England are playing with a refreshing positivity that they never look to stop scoring runs and just forget about how distant the target is. Suddenly, the pressure is on the fielding side having to defend totals instead of just picking the wickets. I'm sure it's something more than that, but to me, it looks that way.

Every Test this summer:

Eng bowl.
Bowl well.
Oppo middle order featuring the WK pile on a partnership.
England bat.
Stokes out batting like a mad man.
Concede a lead
Oppo on the verge of batting England out of the game.
Collapse unexplainably in a casual fashion.
England turn up to chase it like its a charity match
Bairstow 100
Win.

To be fair it helps when the opposition in a strong position throw their wickets away. I don’t think the pitches have deteriorated as much but also the opposition spinners haven’t bowled well.
