English cricket thread

As a minor point, it was the perfect opportunity to try Parkinson on dry pitches, I find that bizarre.
Just looking at some stats for the ground and to be honest it's grim reading for leg spinners and not great for spin in general. So's the next match and then there's not enough data for the third, so I guess what I'm saying is if we do give him a go we probably shouldn't think of it as trying him out in helpful conditions and not worry too much if he's ineffective.

EDIT - Kemar Roach has a fecking amazing record on this ground, btw.

Ah an English batting collapse. A fitting tribute to Warne.

Ah, okay. I assumed with it looking dry and slow it should break up and grip.

You would think a bloke with 100 FC wickets at 23 might get a look in. England's spin bowling stocks must be pretty good..

268-6 at stumps. With runs on the board and Bairstow not out England have just about edged the day's play.

Huge innings from Bairstow in the context of Root's captaincy.

2 hundreds in his last 3 matches should easily be enough to secure him a decent run in the side now. He's 32, so this should be the last one. Big if but if he could have a successful 3 years or so he could yet go down as a decent test player.

If Leach is the best spinner England have for test cricket, they're fecked (if it wasn't already obvious)

Important breakthrough from Stokes. Another one before the new ball would be nice

Am I forgetting someone or is Da Silva the first white bloke to play for Windies for a very long time?

Brendan Nash? Must be about 10 years since he last played.
I googled and I'm looking at pics and I've still got no bells ringing here

EDIT - While I'm at it, apparently Da Silva is
the first Caribbean-born white West Indian to play Test cricket in almost 50 years
So he is at least unusual in actually being West Indian and white.

There are a decent amount of white people who live here in Trinidad and in Barbados, but you don’t see them around the cricket scene very much

West Indies didn’t have a black captain until 1960, which seemed crazy when I first learned about it but on reflection wasn’t that crazy.

Either Windies get less careful now Bonner's got his hundred and get bowled out quickly/put on quick runs, or the chance of a draw starts increasing rapidly here.

We're expecting to lose time tomorrow.

To be fair England have been severely hampered by the loss of Wood today.

Not exactly a shock if Wood doesn't last 5 days though is it? Nor Stokes in fairness given he's still working his way back to fitness. Picking Overton and Woakes together was a very poor decision. At least one of Broad or Anderson had to be here, and they should have given Mahmood or the other lad a run out ahead of Overton. Don't understand what business he has being on this tour - he's not young and he's not experienced, nor is he particularly good.

That's one of the worse umpiring decisions I've ever seen, would barely have hit a second set of stumps.

Rightly reviewed, and rightly overturned.

Now lets use that life and build an opening partnership for the first time in what feels like forever.

Feels like Root might be building something big here, but the best we can hope for is to save a draw.

You never know, if the pitch starts to show variable bounce and they bat long enough to get Wood fit to bowl a few overs it's not impossible. Doesn't feel likely with this attack though I must admit. Still, 100 up and only 1 down, unbelievable!

Well played, Crawley. Don't think there's a result in this pitch but positives to be taken regardless.

EDIT - I'm not sure I'd even try to win it. They made us bowl 157.3 overs. Let them bowl.

Help yourself stuff for the batsmen before Caribbean rain of all things halts proceedings.

England really can't buy a break these days.

No Wood makes this a bold declaration, can’t see us winning from here. And if the Windies start strong and we are not bowling well there is not really any options to change it

I think 280 is about the perfect number to give the batting team enough rope to hang themselves... but I'd want a hell of a lot more confidence in my bowling options than I'd have in England's current lot if I was making that call.

Might as well go for it. Everyone usually criticises Root for being too cautious. You’ve gotta have that target there for them otherwise it’ll be a block fest.

I'd be really surprised if this isn't a block fest. It'd take them four sessions to get 280 odd the rate they went first innings.

I like Harmison a lot. I don't think he really has natural commentary skills (reckon he's learning though) but he's just a pleasant guy. Comes across as both very sweet and genuinely passionate.
