English cricket thread

That last over was a true England Cricket moment.

Proud of the boys. We needed a series win after the disaster that was the World Cup.

It’s ridiculous that the selectors had big Jason in the reserves for the last World Cup. The man is a match winner in any format of the game.

Why we're seemingly trying to train Phil Salt up as a no.7 is beyond me - a top order batsman if ever I saw one. Good series but well deserved victory for the Windies. They were very unlucky to lose that 2nd game thanks to a poor wide call but overall 3-2 feels about right.

Can't say I've been too impressed with England's seamers outside of Topley who was largely very good. Little bit worrying for the future for when the likes of Wood, Archer etc might be gone and with Jordan seemingly on the way out already. Hopefully Mahmood can learn and improve and some other guys can stick their hand up too (Blake Cullen in a couple of years?). Garton might still go on to do well anyway in fairness, not like we saw much of him really.

I know this is generally about men's cricket but the test match in the Women's Ashes had a thrilling, tense conclusion in Canberra. Meg Lanning declared with Australia 216-7, setting England 257 to win in 48 overs. England looked well on course to win the match heading into the last hour, the match ended with Australia the only team who could win.

there’s countless top quality top order batters for England though, that’s the problem. If Banton was at 7 people would be saying exactly the same, just as Roy, Mo, Livi. Move him to 6 and it’s hardly a change, and it’s not like Billings is any slouch. England have decided they want a Malan/Vince player at 3 to hold it together a bit, which is fine and will probably be Stokes come the World Cup.

The bowler situation is worrying at the moment as you say, but there’s plenty of players to return so things can change quite fast

But yeah, West Indies player very well and fully deserved it

It was a brilliant match, genuinely thought England were going to do it until Dunkley got caught. The first T20 was very good too with an unbelievable chase down from Australia. The two washouts were a massive shame, Australia have all but won it now with two games played, unless England win all three games in the format that Australia excel in (what was the record they set, 26 unbeaten? Unreal).

Looking forward to the World Cup afterwards too, you’d think these two sides will be the favourites with India in contention too. New Zealand’s bubble conditions could wreck havoc as it gets closer/as it goes on

I'm sorry but Salt is better and more destructive than all of Vince, Mo, Billings. In my view he should have been batting no.3. Never going to get his foot in the door coming in right at the end of the innings needing to try and smack it from ball 1. He's not used to that role and he's never going to play it with anyone but England so it will be a seriously slow learning curve.

But as I said, Vince isn’t there to be destructive, that isn’t the role that England want from their 3. Mo is one of the most destructive batters on the planet (particularly against spin, but I do think becoming more fluid with these lineups is a big next step that Englands next captain Jos should make), and swapping 7 for 6 is, while probably the right call, is not particularly going to make much of a difference at all.

Mo is occasionally destructive but mostly only mildly so. Check his SR if you don't believe me and compare with Livingstone, Roy or Salt.

Ashley Giles - sacked. Chris Silverwood and Justin Langer are in a race to see who gets sacked next.

Real shame for the England girls losing this morning. Bowled well but in the end Australia just have too much quality in the format, get like the writing was on the wall when Amy Jones and Sophia Dunkley went in quick succession. I do reckon there’s definitely a mental block that every side get when they get a shot against them, even if India did manage a singular victory over them last year. Got to be big favourites for the World Cup, although England particularly do have a shot.

Oh also Chris Silverwood has been sacked, which had to happen really

Graham Thorpe has also been sacked but Strauss has confirmed Root will stay as captain.

Some reports that Langer is the top target for England, if that's true then it's only fair that Silverwood gets the Australia job :)

Funnily enough, Trevor Bayliss will be one of the favourites to get the Aussie gig if it becomes available.

Why is Langer assumed to be leaving the Australia job anyway? Have their results pre-Ashes been worse than I was aware? Did he take blame for that Tim Paine drama or some other off field stuff?

Player rebellion. A year ago there were 'rumours' of many players being unhappy with his intense demeanor/methods.

Ahh, right. He seemed to last a fair while before it got too much, so that one doesn't worry me particularly.

Kirsten doesn't seem to be getting as much attention at the moment. Wonder if he's pissed them off too much with constantly chatting to the media.

These things are hard to judge, but Kirsten's role in his biggest achievement(taking India to #1, WC win) seemed to be getting out of the way of a team of player-celebrities.

Langer may be an interesting appointment for England - I think England need someone with his values when it comes to cricket to revive their red ball game. Whether he is the best candidate or not is a separate question, but I hope England hire someone like him. Test cricket needs at least 4 good teams going around to be relevant.

Langer has stepped down now, and it's funny how the media is full of "disgraceful Cricket Australia" news but it's hard to have an opinion about this because the 'media' is now just Langer's old friends.

English seem to be obsessed with coaches when its clearly fairly limited role in Cricket which honestly speaking isn't the one to make or break the teams performances , you need a Captain first and foremost who knows what's he doing to succeed .

Absolute nonsense that it’s a limited role. It’s one of the key roles alongside the captain. You need a coach who understands test match cricket and has the knowledge to succeed. Obviously they can’t control players when they are on the pitch but there is a lot of preparation they are involved in before every match.

A mixture of the media thing (which tbf is not a good look for him at all) and that he’s only put himself forward for the test role, I can see the ECB carrying on being idiotic and having one coach rather than separating them. Part of me is hoping Strauss carries on in Giles old role and has the final say because he’s shown he’s open to fairly fresh thinking and can revitalise.

I’m not sure on Langer as coach, but there’s not really that many options about. They should drive a lorry full of money to Jayawardene to do the white ball and then sit and think long and hard about red ball tbh.

Can't help feeling Stewart could be a bit of an ECB puppet so would prefer a Kirsten or Langer

nice to see the u19s ready to follow in the footsteps of tradition.

Paul Collingwood has been named England's interim coach and will be in charge for their tour of the West Indies.

Some changes have been made to the side, No Burns, Hameed, Butter, Malan, Broad or Anderson
Lees, Fisher, Parkinson and Mahmood could make their debuts

I'm a bit perplexed by the squad announcement.

No Jimmy is bizarre, then not to take Broad either seems like we are back to making strange misguided statement dropping/resting decisions again.

Also surprised Malan has not gone.

Surely we aren't underestimating the Windies again. We never win there!

Dropping Anderson and Broad now means it's easier for the new coach to leave them out. That's the only reason I can think of, it's not like they had a terrible series in Australia. Hope it isn't the end for them but if that is the case they deserve to play one more test together at home.

I don't think Lees is any better than Burns as an opener but given his captaincy experience maybe they're looking at him taking over from Root if he can establish himself in the side.

It all makes sense to me. We need to start thinking long-term if we're going to fix the test team.

Plus i think their performance in the Ashes is misleading. They got a really juicy wicket at Melbourne and plenty of help at Sydney and Hobart too (although Anderson didn't play in that last one). They were outbowled in each game.

Win the test series infront of you with your best team.

Jimmy is still in our best team. Broad arguable.

England spend 4 years losing important fixtures preparing for the next away Ashes. One test in they’ll realise they’re going to get walloped and use the next 4 tests to decide who to kick out. Then they start preparing for the Ashes again..

have you sent your cv in?

For me it’s a stupid decision. England need to start winning matches and for that you pick your best team. Anderson and Broad are in the top 6 bowlers who’ve taken the most test wickets in the past 5 years. You could then play other bowlers with them and others could also learn from them.

Can’t really see why Fisher has been picked as well when there are other better bowlers ahead of him. The batting was the issue, Lees is an interesting choice but Burns should have been retained. Foakes has been woeful with the bat so he shouldn’t have been picked for his keeping alone when Bairstow can keep and you can play another batsmen.

Let’s hope this is a temporary thing and Anderson and Broad are back in the team for New Zealand.

Seen an interview with nasser. He thinks that's them done and he was pretty flabbergasted saying if needing to drop broad and Anderson was one of the big takeaways from the ashes hammering they don't know what they're doing basically.

First test of the Windies-England series starts today. 2pm GMT.

England opening the bowling with Woakes and Overton. They must really, really have wanted Broad and Anderson out of the picture.

17/2 from 4 overs, with both openers (including Lees on debut) back in the hutch.

But it's fine because we dropped Anderson and Broad to make us stronger, so no need to panic :).

Yeah, I was expecting something more interesting than this. I thought the idea was to have a look at some bowlers and we've got Woakes, Wood and Leach. We've had quite a few looks at them.

I'm a big England fan but even I find this hilarious. How are we so incredibly inept?

Dear me! I took one look at the England lineup this morning and thought that's one of the weakest sides I have seen in my lifetime (including the horrendous 90s sides) and WI should be considered favourites at home. We know about the batting but even the bowling looks appalling. They're justifying my concern.

As a minor point, it was the perfect opportunity to try Parkinson on dry pitches, I find that bizarre.
