English cricket thread

Way to let a crap first day light reading knock off an hour of play each day.

Holder has cost his team with two crazy decisions to bowl first. And I don't think England will be leaving out Stuart Broad again any time soon.

This Broad interview is fascinating. Genuinely wonder how many him and Anderson could have had if they'd been encouraged by their captain to pitch it fuller 10 years ago rather than 2 years ago.

Are they not allowed to just put the floodlights on?

They were on for most of the day.

The difference in test cricket vs shorter formats is the red ball is more difficult to pick up than the white ball. What happens in tests is umpires will convene if they think it is too dark, take a reading and every subsequent decision on the light by the umpires is based off of that reading. Yesterday Pope played a gorgeous on-drive off of Gabriel and they took them off 3 mins later.

Not seen the interview but how much of that is also them not minding being hit for four. Broad especially.

Ah I had a feeling it would have something to do with the fact its test cricket. Thanks!

Yep that was part of it, too, he talked about Root coming to him in 2018 and saying he didn't mind if Broad went for boundaries, as long as he pitched up the new ball, and he cited the Campbell wicket as a prime example of it.

Odd decision to start with Archer and Woakes I thought.

Both bowled rubbish this morning and the chance to enforce the follow on is gone.

Yeah don't understand the decision at all and now Woakes takes a wicket off a no ball as well to compound it.

Moments like that make you wonder just how many close no balls like that one pass through a test match but don’t get called because they aren’t reviewed with there being no reason to

Yeah Woakes has done exactly what Leach did on the same ground against the Aussies last year, really hope that it doesn't prove to be as costly.

Wahey Broad is finally on blimey Root it only took you nearly an hour and now let them get settled at the crease.

Not even a single 50+ score from us. Absolutely embarrassing. The top order have all been terrible this tour.

Broad making the decision to get dropped for Wood for the first test even more strange, a classic Broad spell

In fairness, with the exception of the hour or so this morning, England have been relentless.

Not sure there's many bowling attacks in the history of the game you'd rather have over Broad/Anderson/Woakes/Archer in those conditions in England.

Don’t get me wrong, England have been great, and Broad has been magnificent since he’s come back in the second test, but that doesn’t excuse the underperformance that has taken place. I’m not expecting them to have an innings like Stokes did, but most of them have gone out without even a whimper, which is unacceptable to me.

Definitely, but we've seen this a lot with some of the England openers over the years. It's a really, really tricky place to bat and England have 2 ATGs in these conditions and a guy who averages less than both of them with the ball playing this test. Not sure I can remember too many of your guys giving it away in either of these two tests in Manchester.

There's definitely some problems though, presumably you'd be thinking about dropping Campbell, Hope and Dowrich? Brathwaite's stats have been shit for a while too, but at least he tends to hang around.

We definitely should be looking at dropping them. Hope especially, who I rate as a very good batsman, but has been terrible for quite some time. The issue is, who do we bring in to replace them? I haven't been able to follow the domestic scene for quite some time, so I can't say I even know who the batsmen waiting in the wings are.

Dobell made the suggestion you could move Hope down the order and ask him to keep, which I think is a pretty reasonable suggestion. Hope has a lot of issues, but a lot of them are solved if he's not trying to negate the swing from a moving ball: https://www.cricviz.com/why-isnt-shai-hope-better

Joshua da Silva seems the obvious replacement for Campbell and then I guess Darren Bravo and Hetmeyer get in when they're available.

It has been a bit disappointing since the first test but overall I'd say this West Indies side is trending in the right direction. Good group of quicks, a good coach and captain combination and a fair few decent middle order batsmen (I like the look of Brooks a lot). Just need to find another opener and get one or two of Hope/Bravo/Hetmeyer/Brooks/Chase/Blackwood to make a step up from talented to consistently good. Test wise I would say the West Indies are in the best shape they have been for a while.

I know he failed in the warmups, but it's baffling that Sam Hain hasn't got in to the squad for the ODIs. The guy averages 60 in List As ffs.

Same with Salt he deserved a call up is well, but they rather go for Denly.

My Prediction is
Roy
Bairstow
Denly
Morgan
Banton
Billings
Willey
Ali
Curran
Rashid
Mahmood

what's the weather like for today? do we get 3 sessions in?

Wow.

I'd never want to see him in a test shirt again after that if I were a West Indies fan.
