Don't see us playing both Sibley and Crawley. Can't imagine Root batting as low as 5.

Would like to see something like this:

Burns
Sibley
Debly
Root
Stokes
Pope
Buttler
Archer
Mahmood
Leach
Broad

If we really are building towards the Ashes, we need to start building a proper bowling attack and that means having a specialist quick to back up Broad and Archer. Don't think Stokes and Curran are the long-term solution.

Long tail that.

Pat Brown - Bowler. Shorter format specialist, good slower variations, can hit high 80s.

Tom Banton: Might be the next KP....

Yeah both have a big future in the white-ball team. Pat Brown might be a bit predictable in the international game because he doesn't have that much pace, so his 'quicker ball' won't be much of a surprise. Banton is a great prospect though, looks like he could be a star once Roy and Bairstow start to fade.

So Somerset have forfeited their second innings leaving Essex about an hour to survive to win the Championship (or chase 67).

Essex deservedly County Champions! Again. 2nd time in 3 years.

First time a County has done the Championship/T20 double.

Well done Essex. Seems like they win the title when Cook plays a lot of games.

Sarah Taylor's stepping away from international cricket again, due to her anxiety. Absolutely brilliant player at her best, so it's disappointing but obviously she has to look after her mental health before anything else.

I do wonder how many cricketers careers are hugely affected by mental health problems. Obviously we know about Trescothick having to walk away from international cricket and Harmison has opened up post retirement about suffering with depression during his career but I imagine there's many more. It is a sport that by its nature can mess with people's heads. I honestly have no idea what sort of support is made available to players but I hope it's something that cricket boards are increasingly taking seriously.

Anyway, watching her and Claire Taylor bat was what first got me regularly watching the England women's team, so I'm a big fan of hers.

Forgot to respond to these. Cheers guys!

It's definitely an issue with cricket. An individual sport which forces to spend so much time away from family and friends must put huge pressure on the mind.

Sounds like a major coup for England if we can pull it off. Was a great player and coached India and SA to the top.

It'll be interesting to see how he goes. I don't think he was good. His biggest achievement in the test team was to avoid conflict between a lot of big names and a young captain. I did not think he produced fresh ideas or renew the team's talent pool. I'd attribute his success to Dhoni's strengths.

Duncan Fletcher and co carried the can for our disastrous tours of England and Australia in 2011/12, but it was Kirsten's doing.

He will do better in test cricket than Bayliss, though. Don't think ODI/T20 is his strength.

Yeah I don't think he's being appointed for the white-ball stuff. The thinking seems to be that the white-ball team can basically run itself now, with Morgan as captain-coach. Let's hope Kirsten can instill some toughness in the test team and take us on a bit.

So you are blaming him for losses in which he wasn't the coach but giving Dhoni the credit for the wins under him .

The losses happened a month after Kirsten quit and we went to England, Australia six months later with players who were on the verge of retirement with almost no replacement batsmen tested, and our batting failed repeatedly. Dhoni will have to take some of the blame for that as well from the test team.

The ODI world cup win was all Dhoni - he is a genius limited overs captain. Kirsten's subsequent managerial stints where limited overs is concerned had poor returns.

So nice to see that the kid friendly Hundred teams are all sponsored by junk food.

BBC saying that England weren't impressed with Kirsten's interview and may give the job to Silverwood instead.

Reading between the lines, looks like Kirsten flew over expecting to be given the job and was surprised that he had to go through a formal interview. Sure there'll be plenty of briefing from his side if he doesn't get it.

Not sure about Silverwood. We've gone down the up-and-coming County coach route with Moores and look where that got us.

Confirmation that the job has gone to Silverwood.

I think it's a good appointment and shows that the county circuit is still being noticed and they won't just go after someone with international experience who has coached another country.

His record is very impressive, he's a good age (44) and seems an intelligent cricket man.

The article quotes Ashley Giles as saying Silverwood has "detailed thoughts on what it will take to win the Ashes in Australia and win major ICC white ball competitions" so it's now up to him to deliver.

It's an interesting time for him to be taking charge, particularly as a former bowler himself as our opening bowling partnership for last decade and more is on the home straight and both will need replacing shortly.

At the other end of the order we still face many issues with the batting, thankfully the middle order is a bit more settled but still possibly needs looking at.

Silverwood strikes me as an odd choice. He did a good job with Essex (although the fact that we went on to win again without him does make you wonder if they we just don't have a good side), but id have thought we'd have wanted to have a bit of a change of direction from Bayliss rather than a member of his team.

Obviously needs time to make his mark, but when you have a proven coach in Kirsten overlooked he must have been bloody convincing in those interviews.

We'll see won't we. Seems Kirsten didn't show the commitment they wanted.

Appreciate your loyalty to the county game Chris, but it does seem strange that we don't deem any English coach worthy of coaching the Hundred but we'll gladly appoint one to coach the England team. The national job isn't a finishing school.

The last time we went for a proven county coach, it failed - twice.

Think it's more that Kirsten was unconvincing. Maybe that left them in a bit of a hole.

In-house appointments have a history of backfiring. Moores, McLaren, Lancaster in the rugby... there's a long list of coaches who've stepped up from within the set-up and been unable to command the players' respect.

The only thing is the skill set required to win foreign Test series' is totally different to that required to win what is essentially a slogfest.... so if they want to pack the franchises with foreign coaches that's fine by me - we're already 50 over World Champions anyway.

Test cricket has become far too predictable in that hardly any away teams ever win the series and if Silverwood has a blue print for changing that then he absolutely has to be given a chance to prove it.

Moores had a blueprint too though, didn't he.

England have a lot of younger players and an average captain atm. Guess you can look at it two ways: one hand, a young, unproven coach might mesh well with a group of young, unproven players. But on the other hand perhaps we need an experienced hand to guide them.

Im abit underwhelmed to be honest. Is this the man who will inspire change to Englands top order batting woes, and help Morgan keep the ODI set up ticking over?

Wrt Kirsten, I think he's a terrific man manager but nothing else in terms of tactics etc.

His coaching stints post India have all been largely mediocre. Think England have dodged a bullet by not appointing him.

I think Stokes Mrs. has come and said it's a joke. No idea if it genuinely is her bit seemed it

Is this a serious post? His tenure with the Proteas afterwards is hands down the most successful period in the history of SA cricket including series wins in New Zealand, England and Australia

Damage limitation I suspect.

In the end, it's just a squabble between a married couple, and one of the reasons I hate camera phones and social media. Although Stokes does seem to have a violent tendency, though probably when he drinks, as he comes across as a very decent humble guy in interviews and on pitch behaviour.

Yeah he seems a horrible drunk doesn't he.

Aye, caus Guido are definitely a reliable source.

Photos are photos though aren't they. Not like he's invented a quote. And it's hard to deny that's Stokes in the photo.

Yeah, and his wife has said that they smush each other in the face like that and posted a picture of her doing it to him.

I guess though your two options here are believing that Stokes choked his wife at one of the most high profile events of the cricket calendar despite his wife denying it and nobody else in the assembled cricketing world or media noticing, or thinking that Paul Staines might not be playing it with a straight bat.

I know which one my money is on.
