England vs Bangladesh

Silly, silly move to send out a night watchman against James Anderson with a new ball. Bresnan ended up getting him, but Anderson would've gotten him anyway. Shakib should've just come in.

I'll be watching the first session tomorrow.

They're lucky Finn was tired by the time the 2nd new ball was taken. Bresnan absolutely wasted it.

The two batsmen at the crease, plus Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah need to play out around 50-55 overs.

feck me what a day of cricket. Absolutely loved every minute of it.

How this test ends will depend largely on the weather tomorrow. If it's a gloomy day with lots of cloud cover then England will skittle us with their swing bowlers within an hour and a half and have the game won shortly after lunch.

However if it's a sunny day like today then we may well have the batsmen to hold out well into the day's play tomorrow.

Either way, we've made a much better fist of this then I dared imagine. Great stuff.

I think Bangladesh would've had a much better chance of drawing this if not for that bit of rain, helped England's bowlers.

They lost 2 sessions, but without the rain, Bangladesh wouldn't be following on.

Also, Melbourne Red, I think it's class you're supporting Bangladesh and not Australia, even though you live in Australia.

Cheers zing. I'd already caught the bug as a young kid in Dhaka in the early 90s watching us fight out ICC Trophys against UAE and Holland, and occasionally playing exhibition games against the top sides.

After we moved here I did support Australia quite passionately, but never to anywhere near the same extent I supported Bangladesh. There's a certain romance to a team that gets hammered all the time.

Is Tamim Iqbal the same player who thrashed our pace bowling attack in the 2007 World Cup?

Saw some of the innings today, he was quite exceptional. Amazing talent, let's hope he doesn't waste his talent like Ashraful did

He was 14 in 2003, but yes he was the one who thrashed you in 2007

Er, yea, I read that as 2007

What do you think are Bangladesh's chances of drawing the match?

If the sun's up I'd entertain the possibility but we'd still have to negotiate the new ball without any more wickets and then bat 50 overs without offering them any chances.

With Shakib's impetuous streak there's no guarantee he'll stick around too long, so it'll really put the onus on two batsmen- Mushfiq and Mahmudullah.

I'd be shocked if it England don't win tbh, although I may well put some money on the draw if the odds are as big as they should be.

Had my wisdom teeth out. Stuck at home all day. Keep switching between this match, India's match(if playing) and the French Open.

I like watching any tests played in England, Australia, NZ anyway. Something really pleasing about it to the eye.

I think if Bangladesh play out the new ball with out any wickets, the draw is very much realistic.

Forecasters say weather will be ideal Melb.

This pleases me.

Although it'll be even more annoying if we implode.

Zing you're right about matches played in England being pleasing to the eye. I've always thought that too. Something about the aesthetics of their grounds, the gloomy weather- it captures the imagination.

Someone forgot to tell Hashim Amla that you're supposed to get out and stuff in cricket

No way will he waste his talent, his career trajectory has been on the up, season after season he has been improving.

Ashraful never learned, match after match, series after series it was the same thing.

Which is why after such a significant number of ODIs and Tests he still averages low to mid 20s in both forms

Bresnan out of the 2nd test with a side strain, Sidebottom called in.

Hopefully Shahzad will get the nod for the 2nd test as I think he could be the next Darren Gough if he is managed right. He can swing it both ways but can also bowl high 80's low 90's. England need a bowler who can bowl at the stumps as when it aint swinging our attack looks poor.

For a long time we relied on Fred to provide a bit of magic reversing it around the legs and hitting out middle, before him Simon Jones stepped up when it wasn't swinging.
Hopefully Shahzad can provide some magic

Actually pleased about that, not that Bresnan is injured of course, more so because i think Sidebottom in for Bresnam will strengthen the bowling attack and should have been the situation anyway, dont fancy that shahzad much myself, don’t see much in him especially at test match level.

The only potential dilemma with Sidebottom is hes a new ball bowler, but yet Finns performance at Lords youd say would warrant him getting the new ball at whats expected to be a quick bouncy pitch at Old trafford, and then of course you have Anderson who as the senior bowler will take the new ball without question…..some interesting decisions to be made.

Finn
Anderson
Sidebottom
Swann

would be my bowling attack for Old trafford.

I rate Bangladesh. If they had some bowling discipline they would be very good. Definitely worth their Test status, whatever Boycott says.

I'd actually go with five bowlers at Old Trafford and rest a batsman - possibly Bell (not that he has done anything wrong), but I would like to see Shahzad and Finn in the same attack.

I don't think Sidebottom is test class anymore. He bowled well in the World cup but then so did Bresnan and he looked out of sorts up till the last couple of days of the test. Sidebottom has lost pace and when the ball isn't swinging he never looks like getting a wicket. It was the wrong decision to replace Onions with him in the last game against South Africa it will be wrong to bring him in now.
Also we know what he can do we do not know what Shahzad has to offer. Its better to test him now than to take him to Oz without him bowling a test ball.

I should know the answer to this but how good of a young bowler is Finn is he a really high prospect. When it comes to county I only watch abit of Yorkshire and I haven't watch allot of the Bangladesh series.

He's the new Glen McGrath don't you know, well at least thats what the media are trying to make him.

He's a decent prospect, bowls tight lines that force the batsman to play. His height means that he will always get natural bounce, as was seen in flat pitches in Bangladesh.
He has yet to be tested against quality opposition but he is probably already penciled in for the ashes, and should do well down there if England don't cock him up through over analysing him.

Be interesting to see how he does with the New ball at Old trafford

Come on Bangladesh!! Can see Tamin getting another blockbuster century on the traditionally fast Old Trafford wicket. With ball coming quickly onto his bat, he certainly has the ability to make another big score in this test!

Shahzad makes his debut....

But more importantly, we have news from the front line, where Gnasher McGlashan has been spying on the England warm-up. "Ajmal Shahzad will make his debut," he declares. "He's just been presented his cap by David 'Bumble' Lloyd."

Bangladesh...we might drop one of our pacers, and play an extra spinner.

Sammsky1, if this has any more bounce than Lords, we are done for. We struggled at times with the bounce at a flat lords, so I'm not hopeful. Not to mention we've already had our one good performance per tour.

ENGLAND WIN THE TOSS AND WILL BAT

England Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior (wk), Ajmal Shahzad, Graeme Swann, James Andeson, Steven Finn

Bangladesh Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Jahurul Islam, Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Shafiul Islam, Abdul Razzak, Shahadat Hossain

2 changes for Bangladesh

Abdul Razzak comes in - terrible decision, he has lost all ability to bowl.

Shafiul Islam - this I'm ok with, I wanted him in the 1st match. But we should have dropped Ashraful and tried a youngster we brought along.

we got one!

strauss gone for 21.

Again, vindicating those who wanted Shafiul in the test side from the start of the tour.

But now the nemesis of Bangladesh, for now, comes to the crease. Go away Trott.

Only caught the last half an hour but what a great start for us. In an unexpected turn there seems to be some sunshine over Old Trafford and the wicket appears to be flat so 3 wickets is roughly 3 wickets more than I'd have expected to get.

It's also worth noting how fecking terrible Shakib Al Hasan is at winning the toss. It seems to happen once in every ten matches, and then he inevitably makes a completely bewildering choice.

could and should have been 4, right after Razzak got cook, Bell came in, and three down, just before lunch pressure on, he doesn't put a short leg in! So of course the 1st ball up, goes right to short leg :(

KP is important, he can change the complexion of this innings very quickly.

Aye, unforgivable captaincy. Shakib is to captaincy what Anwar Hossain Monir was to fast bowling.

now we are leaking runs...bloody hell.

did you happen to catch the news about old town, 120 dead, 200 injured, I went and did a 5 hour emergency shift at DMCH...I swear the God, I have never seen anything so scary in my life.

Even after two showers, the stench of burnt flesh was still on me.

fecking hell dude! I had no idea, I've just looked it up on the Daily Star after reading your post.

Everyone you know alright?

I don't know anyone in 'Puran Dhaka', so I'm ok as far as friends and family are concerned, however I have never spent a tougher day professionally. After I finished my shift at Dhaka Medical, I then spent a couple of hours wandering around university area, it just didn't make any sense.

So many of the dead were women and children.

Sad thing is, from this morning on, we had torrential rains, if that rain had come a few hours earlier, I bet half the lives could have been saved.

Can't imagine a more awful way to spend a working day mate, really sorry to hear that. The number of casualties involved here are actually pretty staggering as far as fires go.

England 5 down, but the evil Ian Bell is still at the crease.

Why is he evil? He averages 178 against Bangladesh.

Should be out by now if Mushfiq had stayed low for that nick off Shakib's bowling, or if we'd appealed a bit louder for that Razzak LBW.

Either way, I'd rather Bell at the crease than Morgan. Morgan looked completely comfortable against the left arm spin, and could have dug in and done some damage.

Bell, at least, can be expected to score slowly.

He's still averaging just shy of 50 even with his stupidity, I'm not sure he'll ever learn
