England in India 2021

I am in the minority here but I think if a team makes 350 and looks 70 below par, then the icc needs to change the rules, and the home team
the playing conditions.

weirdly, this has happened around the world cups but the world cups and the champion trophies themselves are unaffected by it. India exiting in 2019 had nothing to do with their scoring rate for example. The conversation should be about how we make sub 300 normal and bring different bowling skill sets back into the game. Not about India’s approach. Post 2011, the rules changed and bilateral series been poor to watch for most part since then.

Last two hundreds have been hit by rahul and guess what we lost both the matches. His 85 or 90 S/R innings won't help us reach 360 plus total.

People keep on saying we must change our approach. It will not happen overnight but it will definitely not happen with rohit dhawan kohli rahul as our top 4. Dhawan must be binned and shaw or some other explosive batsmen needs to be given chance. Point is just by having kohli ir shastri say we want to be aggressive won't do anything unless they drop dhawan.

That's a good point. 335 is still a good target and had we faced any other side probably would have won it but against England on such tracks with such rules 330 is like 250.

Another humbling defeat on Sunday might do India good. The next 20 and 50 over WC are in India and they need to start building now with some changes in personnel and strategy. 20 over cup is anyone’s to win but 50 over I’d like to see something like this:
Rohit
Kishan/Gill
Kohli
Suryakumar/Iyer
Pant
Hardik
Jadeja
Bhuvi
Shami
Bumrah
Top class spinner

What are our options for this? Everyone used recently has been struggling or that's just the pitches?

Ashwin seems to be the only option that I can think of and he can also bat so maybe time for Kohli to put his ego aside and bring him. If you look back both ashwin and jadeja were dropped after Champions trophy because they had a poor series and they couldn't take wickets in middle order but chahal and kuldeep since 2019 wc have looked awful so why continue to persist them. Atleast ashwin used to contain runs which kuldeep or chahal fail so management have to rethink now.

It’s a tough one. These are very good pitches to bat on and England are relentless in their approach, they are world champs after all. It’s a shame Kuldeep had fallen off a cliff because he looked like he could be a star. Chahal is ok but not someone who stands out as a match winner. As another poster said maybe Ashwin with his experience but even he has been used defensively in limited overs. Hoping a star emerges from IPL.

England would have choked and lost this match if it wasn’t for Stokes getting a lot of luck from the third umpire.

No way would England win if they needed to score 100 more instead of 50 more.

These are your two best ODI sides of current times

Choking English middle order vs test match batting Indian top order:lol:
Come on mate...

Seems a confidence bowler and he’s completely shot of that right now. Even in IPL, KKR don’t seem to have full confidence in him. Hope he can turn it around but sadly I feel he’ll fade away from the national setup.
Let's hope he turns it round. He's a real talent

I’d have Livingstone ahead of Malan in the T20 side batting at number 6. Move Stokes up to 3

It's a better bet than Stokes there and it's less of a gamble when you look at his intent when he comes out to bat.
Stokes should bat 4 with Bairstow 3. That way he comes in (ideally) between the sixth and 10th over and has a couple of overs to knock it around before launching. Imagine if he repeated yesterday's innings in a T20.

For the finisher role, can only see Billings at this stage unless someone emerges over the summer. Bopara is arguably the best finisher in the English game but can't imagine they'll go back to him.

Minor quibble about whether Stokes might be better at 3 than at 4 but regardless I think the top 4 should be sown up with Buttler, Roy, Bairstow and Stokes.

Morgan I think is the best finisher England have got and he has the ability to hit sixes from the off which is why he may be better at 6. I'm still not convinced by Billings. I know Livingstone rarely bats in the middle order but hopefully we will see what he is like there in the IPL, Blast and The Hundred. England are already using Moeen potentially at 7 when he never bats there in the county game.

Come on guys, England's performance today was phenomenal.

Don't be so hard on yourselves.

Honestly, it wasn't. People who haven't watched a lot of ODI cricket in India won't realise just how normal Englands chase was yesterday. Rohit Sharma scored almsot 270 on his own in India. James Faulkner scored a 60 ball century in a 9th wicket 100 partnership and almost helped Australia chase down 380 or 390 after having been 100-5. A few years back we chased down 350 with the loss of one wicket in 42 overs.

We've known for years just how easy it is to bat and, more so, chase in Indian conditions. For some reason, our team forgets this and thinks 330 is enough on roads with 60 yard boundaries.

He seemed to run off a little bit of mystery for the first few years. Now that thats gone, he seems very average especially for an Indian spinner. I remember the first time he played against England at Old Trafford and he took 6-25. The likes of Roy, Root and co. had absolutely no clue how to face him. Then you compare that to yesterday, and you see the ease at which the English players have dealt with him recently. Id sooner have Ashwin and Jadeja back.

I feel he needs to play domestic cricket and must change his IPL franchise. I feel he will do really well say for csk where dhoni will use him better or even for Mumbai. I still have faith in him and feel he should regroup and come back. Till then I would like us to give a new spinner a chance (don't know who that will be) or bring back the old duo of ash jadeja who can do a decent job especially with the WC being at home.

Can't even imagine how many England would need with their bowling attack if they had to bat first on this ground

England have been incredibly lucky in tosses and yet still they've lost two series.

Out of interest, where is Chris Woakes? Injured, dropped long term or dropped as cant perform outside of England?

He was with the test squad but then went home as he wasn't part of T20 plans . Just like with Root they didn't feel that there was a point to getting him back & quarantine for 3 Odi's

It's annoying that I have to watch this on mute because Gavaskar is spectacularly bad at his job.

Absolutely awful bowling from England. India haven't had to do anything big as England just keep giving freebies

Poor captaincy as well Topley and Curran are struggling and we keep putting them in. Should have taken them out and tried to stop the momentum while letting them regain their composure before putting them back into that attack.

?
Curran gave away 6 runs in his first 2 overs.. went for 15 in his 3rd and was taken off.

Topley went for 15 in his first 3.. went for 17 in his 4th and was taken off..

they werent bowling brilliantly, but they werent exactly awful either.
There was no momentum that needed to be stopped till they bowled their over that took them off the attack

Sampath Bandarupalli: 65/0 is India's highest score after ten overs while batting first in a home ODI since the 2011 CWC. They also scored 65/0 vs WI in 2014.

Wow

and why does Wood keep falling over ..

Do England regret not having Rashid for the test squad? They're struggling to pick him
