England in India 2021

right - happy he's gone

Really glad that if that was going to happen, there wasn't an over or so for next in to face - would have been prime 1 brings 2 territory.

A flurry of wickets then would have evened up the day given the state of this wicket.

The period with Moores as a coach he was absurd. I can't remember an England batsman making run scoring in this country look as stupidly easy as he did then.

In microcosm, I think Root's form either side of Bayliss sums up how fecking terrible he was. Turns out you bat well in test matches by batting well in test matches not by trying to rattle along at 5 an over.
Yeah Bayliss was a great one-day coach but a rubbish five-day coach really.

Will be interesting to see how Archer does on this pitch, whilst India have the best spinner(s) England has the quick that could make the difference.
Yeah. He was superb in his first series, the Ashes of 2019, but he's played on some flatter wickets since then and not always looked up for it.

The heat may actually help here - Root can't bowl him for marathon spells so will be forced to use him as a shock bowler, which he should be doing anyway.

Someone asked if Root has improved as a bat but he was this good from day 1 in Asian conditions.

I remember his debut in Nagpur - he played with Pietersen and made 70 odd, and looked exactly as good as he did today

Good start to the series for england but all is not lost for India. Honestly expected a slow start by India especially with all the injured players coming back and many coming back from the glorious test series win in Australia. Won't read too much into India's performance today but full marks to root for his fabulous knock. Class batsmen.

He was a cheerleader I think. A good foil for Morgan who knew what he wanted to do, and not a great coach for Root who probably needed a more traditional coach to guide the development of the side. Silverwood's back to basics mantra has been exactly what this team needed.

Good day for England, but still need plenty more runs. Ideally they need to bat out tomorrow. The good news is that their best batsmen will either be at the crease or still to come.
I thought India’s 3 main bowlers were brilliant and India will know their still in this match. But the bowlers will be feeling tired tomorrow and that must be a concern for them.

Us England fans will tell you there is no such thing as a easy 500+ with our batting!
There's no such thing as an 'easy 500' anywhere. If its so easy, he'll give me 20-1 on England falling short.

Yeah this is true, his abnormalities in his average come down under in NZ and Australia

Yeah maybe mate. He definitely seems to have been very light-touch doesn't he.

As you say, Morgan seems to have very clear ideas. Can only assume he'll join the coaching staff once his career ends (with maybe a stint at an IPL franchise to gain experience).

If India knock a couple over early (bear in mind Stokes and Pope are totally out of match practice and Root will be stiff as a board) they could easily bundle England out for 350 and be in total charge of the game Ash.

Could really have done without that last wicket. Damb you Bumrah!

Do we think Root has a shot at beating Cooks run total for England? I would have thought so but hes got to avoid injury and loss of form for a decent stretch of time to do it.

Yes, he's 30 and hasn't missed a test through injury in his entire career. He has more than a shot, but it depends on his hunger. He could play 10 more years and challenge Uncle Sachin, he could jack it in in his early-mid 30s like Cook and miss both.

Based on his career to date he’d go past Cook in his 140th test and Sachin in his 191st. If he can put his rough form of a few years ago behind him he has a chance of getting past both. Hell England have about 15 more tests scheduled for this year alone. He could be past Cook by 2023.

Would be fantastic to see. Cook was a grinder but really tailed off towards the end of his career it felt like.

Yeah I agree. Really could have done with Sibley wearing the bowlers down for a bit more in the morning. It’s hard to blame him, he got a great ball, but I’m surprised he didn’t see the over out.

If I was a betting man, I’d have Root going past Cook but not Sachin. I don’t think we deify players enough in England to put up with diminishing returns in their later years so Root would need a Gooch-esque Indian summer in his late 30s.

I was surprised to find out that Joe Root has played 48 tests as captain - feels like he took over recently..

So happy to see Root enjoying his cricket again. I think everyone feared that the captaincy was a burden on him. He's in supreme nick and long may it continue.

In terms of the match situation, whilst England have made good strides under Silverwood I am intrigued to see if they can develop a ruthless streak. The last tour they managed to score runs up top only for India to go and score even more. England need 500+.

Very similarly to yesterday, so far. India starting with their best three bowlers, who've bowled quite well again, and England largely trying to see them off.

EDIT - Slow left arm time and Stokes tries to reverse sweep him first ball.

Why is the pitch so shit, is it always the case at this venue? I was hoping for a good test match, it appears unless this pitch becomes a square turner at day 3/4/5 this match will be a draw. For me pitches which are batting paradise takes away the excitement of a test match. I would always prefer bowling pitches where getting runs is a challenge and only the best batsmen survive.

Pitch is a starting to misbehave slightly. Stokes has been brilliant and he’s quickly batting India out of this match. Indian bowlers will be tiring as well.

Absolutely rinsing us.

It doesn't matter how flat the pitch is if we can stick 600 up. Never easy batting facing that kind of scoreboard pressure in a test series India are expected to win relatively comfortably.

Agreed.

You can blame that Stokes wicket on me. It was the second ball after I sat down to watch this morning.

Which ground has seen the most triples? Sehwag, Karun Nair have triples at Chepauk. Root could get there.

We would need to bat until lunch tomorrow, so yeh its possible. Can tell by our tempo we are in no rush.

Welcome sight to wake up and see we haven’t collapsed

Root will be knackered by the end of it

Really lacks any kind of insightful analysis this coverage. Best you get is Nick Knight zooming in on Ashwins point of release.

Nothing like the third man feature on sky.
