England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

The only way Southgate may have got sacked was if we didn't get out the group.

He's safe now no matter what.

There is some hope if we get absolutely torn apart in the round of 16. It will be better to get smashed if we are to go out.

I think England are going to play France. Germany should beat Hungary. Pepe will make sure they get a point vs France.

If anything that second half shows exactly why you don't drop Kane. That was an extreme version that pretty aptly demonstrates the issues England have had in most games. If you create virtually nothing it's hard to pin it all on Kane, they didn't even have control of the ball nevermind creation.

He's still the one class striker. Better off praying he comes good than lumping in DCL because the reality is the only way England progress far is with Kane improving. DCL should be used more, though.

Totally disagree. Yes he’s topped goals and assists but he’s looked off the pace and has done nothing in 3 games. To play him 90 mins 3 times in what 10/11 days is stupid man / squad management.

If he’s out leading striker and has had 1 shot on goal in 3 games, you’ve got to try something else.
While not defending Southgate, he had to play Kane today to get his form/confidence back.

Reg. bolded part, you don't drop your only world-class attacker just before a knockout clash against Germany or France. He has plenty of time to rest before the knockout round anyway.

England's way to the final if Slovakia vs Spain has a winner and Sweden will avoid a defeat against Poland.

LAST 16 ROUND: France/Germany/Portugal/Hungary

QUARTER-FINAL: Spain/Sweden/Poland/Slovakia/Finland/Ukraine

SEMI-FINAL: Netherlands/Czech Republic/Denmark/Wales

You reckon that game added to his confidence??
Even if he didn’t “drop him” he could and should have pulled him off after an hour and given DCL a run.

If Kane were to get injured, then what? His back ups are being given no minutes cos Southgate is blinkered as feck irrespective of form. Mindless management.

Gareth Southgate's biggest frustration with England's performances so far is that they haven't scored from a set piece.

If that doesn't sum the man up in a nutshell, I don't know what does.

I can understand why Kane played the full game.

Southgate was hoping he'd score, even if it meant a penalty or the ball hitting him on the arse and going in, and it would boost his confidence and he'd look back to normal.

He's been terrible though. It's like he's aged 10 years in about 2 months.

Sounds about right.

Woeful. The only thing going for England is Southgate is playing 2 DM so it will help when they meet better sides. What I don’t get is they were through so why not go full attack this game and see what the firepower he has can do.
I really would love to see this England side with say Mancini in charge

Does Kane really struggle with confidence? Has always seemed very steady. This start would test anybody but I don't know that it's going to be a big problem. A bit more zip to his running, and more chances created would be the main concern.

Came into this thread and I as always see so much moaning after another win and talks about Southgate being sacked

I have no faith in Southgate. I just hope he keeps getting results and proving my pessimism wrong. It would be fantastic to be forced to eat my words on 11 July if England win this. However, based on what we've shown so far, I can't see us beating France, Germany or Portugal. This feels like the end of the line.

I was born in the late 80's and didn't really start watching England with "critical eyes" before 2006. Still: it's been 6.5 tournaments under several managers now. How are such good players never capable of playing at least semi-entertaining football? Was it this boring in the early 2000's and 90's as well?

Not everything is about winning. It is also about entertainment. It is frustrating because we have the players to play much better football whilst winning more comfortably. We should have hammered the Czech Republic today. They were for the taking.

Croatia were also there for the taking in the first game as well. Negativity is holding this team back. I would say about 85% of our games has been played in our own half this tournament.

Those performances have been dire. We are not going to do anything in this tournament playing like that. Southgate is wasting some of our best players.

I think we’ll play Germany. I expect France and Germany both to win tomorrow night

England have been dull forever, with the odd rare exception. If you can make a team with Gerrard, Beckham, Scholes, Lampard, Rio, Rooney etc boring as hell then there's not much hope is there?

I think with a very attacking manager that is good at getting a group together quickly with limited training and match preparation this group will offer some opportunity to change that in the future because for their clubs they can be exciting players. But somehow as an overall product it is not very good yet.

The Last 20 years in tournaments I think we've been played entertaining attacking football maybe 3 or 4 times.

And one of those was against Panama.

Your only hope of going far seems to be your solid defense. With Kane playing like a pensioner and a coach whose primary objective is not losing, I don't see where your goals are gonna come from...

I mean, Lukaku has more goals than England

I understand what you’re saying, but in tournament football, yes, everything is about winning.

I’ve been quite critical of Southgate as I still believe these players deserve a sexier manager but I have to give him credit for playing Saka today and for how he found himself in this team - was great and I hope to see more of him

Portugal are comfortably the side we should want. How do we face them, what needs to happen?
Portugal is the least likely. They would have to draw and also hope that Germany gets beaten by Hungary to finish second. They could also finish second if they win and Germany beats Hungary but I don't think they can beat France with their current defence.

Definitely Germany or France next for England .

Yes, but what the Hell was he playing at second half? Even more defensive than normal (and that's saying a lot). Why couldn't he, for once, see what sort of attacking play this squad could put together?

I can't see England making it past the next round, given how they've played so far.

Maybe he thinks there’s an extra trophy if you win the cup not losing any goals in the process. In fact if you look how grindy and low scoring last winner was...
