England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

Fantastic tonight, a far cry from how we looked earlier in the tournament. Can't wait to watch Sancho for United.

Regardless of what happens, I have been thoroughly impressed by Gareth Southgate.

What I think he has done is literally be the bravest England manager in decades.

After Sven remarked about genuinely caring what the "Press" think in influencing his team selections et al, Gareth has shown true bravery by creating a new relationship with the media and his squad's interaction with the modern press but never kowtowing to such often malign influences and often laughing - rightly and diplomatically - in the faces of the most influential musings from usually shock-news journos
"Must do this"
Must start x
Must play like Y

etc.

Tactically and management of squad and games has shown clear progress from the World Cup and the calibre of players is better but the function has been raised with greater fluidity and finally we are seeing a level of control and authority in how the team plays through a game.

You can't win every tournament but well done an I hope plenty more to improve upon from the players and the manager onwards over the next few years.

A genuinely humble likeable talented group and manager. Superb.

England were classy tonight. Favourites?
Disclaimer: I'm English.

Tonight was what we hoped, or expected, in Euros games. This is the best squad since the golden generation, and we should easily be beating a Ukraine side that just went through a war in their last match. Injuires and fatigue should have them beat.

But in any case, what I didn't expect, was a 4-0 thumping. We always looked better, and more imporantly for me - we believed we were better. We played on the front foot. I mean, we expect that since our attacking line up is great, but so far we have been reserved.

Same thing should happen in the next round. We are clearly better than Denmark, especially in attacking personnel.

But then in the final, if we make it, it will be interesting to see if we revert to negativity when faced with a decent side - or carry on with the momentum and play with some freedom. I feel if we play negatively, we will lose. Overall, I would make us narrow second favourites to Italy. Italy have shown they love to attack. The natural reaction of a reserved coach is to defend against this. I hope GS will not do this, and instead play to our strengths.

I don't see why England would revert to a negative approach. If negative is how yous set up against Germany, 3 CBs and 2 WBs, then yous should be alright.

I really hope so! I think Southgate's approach is to be cautious with the ball, more than park the bus. Against Ukraine we got it forward efficiently, I hope to see more of that, as we have the forwards to do damage.

If they wind up playing Spain it'll probably be hard to be 'positive'. You'd expect Spain to dominate possession. Might suit you more though

This is what I feel. We played well tonight but Ukraine didn't provide any kind of test, and there's a good chance Denmark won't either. It's hard to know exactly where we stand as a team.

Gotta be careful about the right side of that defense. I don't think Walker and Stones are plugged on entirely when it comes to defending.

Everything seems to be coming together at the right time, kane back to scoring and we are once again looking deadly from set pieces.

Everything seems to be coming together but I'd feel more confident if Wednesday's game wasn't on ITV - where England tournament dreams go to die...

I think it’s simulcast on BBC One also

We won our Group

We beat Germany 2-0 in the R16 Knockouts

Performed a 4-0 drubbing against Ukraine in the Quater final, granted it’s a team we should be beating, but it’s a high stakes QF match, we dealt with the pressure exceptionally

We’ve made it to the Semi Finals without conceding a single goal in the entire tournament

We look solid, I know exactly where we stand and that is currently as one of the favourites for obvious reason now

Maybe I’m wrong but it’s the first time I can remember when we’ve treated tournament football like tournament football and not a series of cup finals. He’s had a strategy for each game. We didn’t go hell for leather against Scotland because we didn’t need to. A win in the first match combined with the qualification structure meant we likely needed just one point from last two group games.

Why risk injury or the confidence set back that conceding whilst pushing for a winner would have been.

So far he’s managed everything superbly

My TV guide says different?

I don't think it's been updated as for me it still says just 'the second semi-final' (rather than who's playing) - BBC will be doing Italy-Spain on Tuesday night I think.

It does feel like that!

Of course it's coincidence, but still, what are the odds for such a drastic difference?

You'd have to look at the games. I'd guess that BBC had more group stage games and ITV had knockout games as a starter. I think both semi-final loses against Germany were on ITV. Statistically you're more likely to lose games as you get deeper in the tournament as the quality of the teams gets better.

Some research done on this too (and I agree it is a coincidence albeit quite a stark one)

People saying we've not been tested and that matters, I get the point, but its not like at the world cup where we shouldn't have been tested yet made a total meal of every game. Apart from the Scotland game, we've done our job very well I think. Last night we were exceptional.

We should be getting to final, doesn't mean we will, but it'll be a massive disappointment if we don't.

England are about 65% to win v Denmark imo looking at team strength. Being at home makes a big difference. Spain would be easier than Italy for final, I reckon 60% to beat Spain, 50/50 v Italy though.

Got to give credit for Southgate for getting England this far. Playing almost all games at home is a big advantage. Can only beat who is in front of you though. He's done that and only Germany even caused any slight problems. Against a knackered Ukraine was always going to be an easy win.

Be interesting to see if he goes in to club football after England, how he gets on.

its been genuinely excellent.

Thank goodness he doesn’t listen to the armchair managers who were giving him ridiculous stick.

some in here were calling for him to be sacked or even hoped England didn’t get out of the group so that he would get the sack.

Was Germany not a test?

They were the better team against France who fluked a win with a single shot on target and an own goal. They beat Portugal 4-2. Croatia were close to knocking Spain out. They fluffed a big chance at 3-3 in extra time. Czech Republic knocked Holland out and gave Denmark a very good game and were value for a result of some sort last night.

Has to be the same team bar any injuries, surely. That was the most convincing England win in a major tournament since what, Euro 96?

Definitely. And the most impressive thing is the way that Southgate has got the national side playing live a team. Not just a group of disparate individuals.
As I have mentioned before, he knows exactly what he needs to do and how to do it.
Deserves huge credit. Especially from all those critics on here only a few days ago.
And I trust that they are big enough to admit that.

You can only play the teams in front of you.
And let's see how well Denmark play before judging them.
Your cup is definitely half empty

Was Germany not a test?

England can’t win in any scenario

“England’s true test is knock out an Elite National side”

well we’ve done that now, we beat Germany……..but oh no!!!! Germany are on the decline, that doesn’t count anymore

Un real some people, it’s true Germany aren’t “as good” as previous tournaments but for Christ sake they are still a solid top top team to beat, it is still a huge draw

The other side of the argument is “well England haven’t gone 1-0 down yet, we don’t know how they’ll react”

well how about we enjoy the fact we haven’t gone 1-0 down……how’s that sound, got to the Semi’s without conceding a goal

This England team are the real deal

Just like Italy are, just like Spain are, just like France and Belgium are

we are at that level, Teams including those I’ve mentioned above will fear us like we’ve feared them, we’ll be mentioned as one of the favourites now and that is a great achievement in itself, now all we need to do is win the darn thing
