England Discussion

Will admit I am a huge critic of him, however IF he actually brought in someone that was able to challenge his ideas in the critical moments of big games then that can change.

Literally the exact same things said of Solskjaer - ‘maybe a new assistant can make him a better manager…’

FFS he’s had 3 tournaments, he’s clearly at the end of his cycle. Let him go.

It really comes down to what England see as an acceptable result from Southgate. If there’s no realistic expectation of winning the WC, there’s no obvious reason to sack Southgate.

Yeah doesn't feel like the FA are risk takers

I honestly think he's taken the team as far as he can. Hasn't every other manager who went out at the quarters or before resigned. Need to find someone who has won things

Weird that Southgate is the one deciding his fate, he's obviously not gonna resign.

Problem with international management is finding someone better that is keen to do the job. I just hope he can be a bit braver in the last 20 mins of big games if he does decide to stay and the FA can't tempt anyone better.

His faux contemplation is winding me up. He was always going to stay. Such a fecking boring bloke who is never going to win anything at any level in his managerial career because he’s too risk averse.

Of course Southgate stays — he has nowhere to go. And he is an arrogant ass.

Who do you think will hire that idiot, if he resigns as England boss? Nobody

Prepare for never winning anything

Exactly , he's on to an absolute winner here.

Hes under pretty much no real pressure due to the fact that English fans seem to be happy enough with getting knocked out vs the first decent team they play these days.

If he doesn't stay in this job he may as well retire because I don't even think he's championship level and without the massive talent he has at his disposal with England (It's a super squad that's probably worth +half a billion pounds) would probably be sacked within 2/3 months.

Southgate is a lot of things, dull, a total charisma vacuum, not good enough to manage England at another major tournament, but arrogant is a bizarre thing to call him.

Having unshakeable belief in own abilities that do not exist and insisting that you are good enough for a job that you clearly are not is arrogance. Playing pretend humble only makes it worse

Absolutely this.

The media still has an an absolute love in with him.
Talksport with the exception of Simon Jordan has been kissing his arse all week
All the pundits on Sky think he is amazing.
He literally cannot lose. He would have been mad to give that all up.
Its just a pity for England fans that they are the only ones who can see he is a busted flush

Agreed

Can't they give someone else a try and go back to Southgate after letting someone else have a crack at the next Euros? If they really believe in Southgate, he's only 52, so he could come back and do the job again like LVG has done with Holland. He's surely not going to suddenly come up with new ideas for the squad that he's had already for the last 6 years, and maybe the players could do with a different voice / tactical direction for the next Euros?

Which board is more incompetent? The FA or Manchester United?

He was always going to stay on. He’s not going to get a job anywhere near as significant as the England job as a club manager. The only way from here is down for him so obviously he’s not going to give it up.

I watched the France game (and IMO his terrible in game Management) and logged on here totally expecting for him to be ripped to shreds for not being proactive in that 20 minute or so period when England were on top.. but most people were happy enough to be beaten by a "superior team" (Who were bad on the day and missing a bunch of their important players).

For all the talk of him building things (getting credit for the work that clubs are doing in training/ molding these guys IMO) Harry Kane will be 33 by the time the next world cup comes around.. Who coming up has anything like his ability up front?

Great news!

Who else is there to take the job? Poch? Tuchel? I’m not sure either are ready for the semi retirement of NT management just yet.
Southgate was involved in the u21 set up and development of the youth set up - not sure anybody else would have the insight that Southgate has built up. I’m certainly not disappointed if he continues - let him have a crack at the Euros and see out his contract.

He's had plenty of time to put that insight into play, is he likely to develop any new ideas tactically for the Euros, or is it a case of more of the same?

Well I for one am shocked.

Peak attention seeking to distract from another exit and another shite game management performance from him.

As many said all along, he was always staying as where else would he go? He was mediocre at very best before England, he'll go straight back to that after. In fact, I wonder if he even will try.

It’s just massively massively selfish. Who the feck does he think he is?

Why are we sticking with Southgate when we should be targeting Pep, Tuchel, or some other fecker who wouldn’t want to go anywhere near the job.

This is exactly how I see it. Club sides know he is incompetent. At best he could get a Palace level job. So not only does it financially make more sense for him but on a personal level he is practically in sackable to the FA at this point. Unless he fails miserably in the Euro qualifiers. But hey if the FA are happy with his mediocre performances then who are we to judge.

Southgate was determined to leave, but he listened to his inner Gareth, and boy does that guy talk a good talk.
Only Jack Bauer can save Euro 24 now.
