England Cricket 2016 - Sri Lanka & Pakistan

Ah yeah you're right. I had completely expunged the existence of Compton from my mind. Still not sure there's a massive difference between batting 6 with a useless top order and 5 with (hopefully) a more solid one.
Probably a pretty big difference batting higher up and keeping against a Sri Lanka side who were often skittled in English conditions and batting there and keeping in India, though.

This game is nothing compared to what England Lions are doing to Sri Lanka A -

True enough but I'm not sure how much it matters. Does it really make that much difference batting 6-7 and having to keep potentially straight after you have batted or batting 5 and having to bat potentially straight after you've kept?

Not sure, really.

Does your memory go back far enough to what we used to do with Stewart?

Stupid dismissal. Misbah deserves better than this shit.

That's a terrible shot.

Four in the match now for Moeen. Can see him getting more, as the Pakistan batsmen increasingly feel they have a hopeless task and would rather try and wack an off spinner than score off the seamers.

Before my time really. Vague recollections of watching him bat but I think he retired when I was like 11. I'm sure someone here can remember.

This reminds me of our tour. Sneak the first test courtesy of some good-ish bowling and awful batting from England and then proceed to get clobbered for the rest of the tour.

At the bottom of the page, Stewart was an opener for most of his England career at I only remember the tail end of his career when he mostly batted 5 or 6.
That was what I thought. I have a vague memory of my dad claiming that at one point we had him opening, captaining and keeping.

EDIT - And that it didn't go well...

ANOTHER EDIT - Sangakkara kept and batted top order for a long time. He did pretty well.

When Stewart batted at the top of the order he didn't always keep wicket as Jack Russell was about. I only remember specifically Stewart batting at 6 towards the back end of career but have vague memories of who should keep wicket for England before that - Stewart or Russell.

The end is nigh. Start the car....

Been an abysmal performance. Amir aside, the bowling was bad. The batting was atrocious. Must improve significantly for Edgbaston.

Get the feeling the series is already over.

From Pakistan's perspective - They need to win the toss and bat first. That's the only way they can win - England's batting line up is still largely fragile and dependent on Cook & Root but Pakistan probably aren't able to score 400+.

I think its scandalous that Pakistan and the West Indies haven't produced quality fast bowlers considering their fast bowling pedigree.

Asif wouldve carried the mantle if he wasn't such an idiot. Amir was on track too before the ban

Stokes out of the third test with a calf injury.

Give Ball another chance?

It will have to be an extremely dry pitch for England to go with a 2 spinners and a 3 man seam attack. I think Finn will get picked but could easily be Ball.

Finn has been absolutely shit this summer - no rhythm and his pace is down. I can't believe he's been put back in the team.

He's also a known quantity. I'd have given Ball another chance every time.

At the risk of England being skittled for about 23 that is a bizarre call.

Big call. There is some cloud around but unless we bowl them out cheaply, the pressure will be on the already weak-minded batsmen.

On a side note, traffic around Edgbaston this morning was a bitch. Not looking forward to driving through there after work :(

Walking wicket against any sort of movement.

How on earth did the selectors not notice that?

Huge wicket! Get into that middle order now.

Didn't that hit outside of the line?

Its really daft. feck knows why we have umpires call on impact which isn't using projection software.

Either its out because a bit of the ball is hitting in line, or its not out because not enough is. Go with the former, because, presumably, thats what the rules say and remove the umpires call aspect.

*Yasir floats a generic leg break wide outside off-stump*

Warne: Boowled!

Needed to break that partnership!
