England Cricket 2016/17 - Bangladesh, India & West Indies (ODI's only)

Pitches are the same. Courtesy T20, batters fancy themselves to score a lot more runs. It's a natural progression of the scoring rate that was inevitable.
Also, bowlers are practising the skill of going for a respectful 7-8 an over, in 20 over cricket.

England must be wondering what they have to do to win. And I know Yuvraj will get MOTM, but I would give it to Ashwin or Kumar. Both bowled excellent spells considering the opposition got 360 odd.

Does 'bowl better' really take that much working out? ;)

Good game that though. India deserved series winners.

Pretty much.

We've made it competitive, despite being crap at bowling. Due to a combination of us being good at batting and India being similarly bad at bowling.

Fancy we'd beat them, at home, in ODI's, at present (Well, okay... if it was summer. It'd be a bit unfair to invite India to play a series in England in January).

Jadeja started tightening the strings to be fair. His 1/45 with the prize wicket of Roy who was on a good run caused a mini collapse by Ashwin. Bhuvi made sure England didn't run away at death.

Teams struggled to score 300 in the previous India vs NZ series and except for Mumbai which is probably India's version of Johannesburg, the series with SA had fairly average scores too. India's last ODI at home saw the opposition bowled out for 79. Sometimes when the batsmen are really good and the pitch isn't on the slower side, both sides score 300+ easily similar to how it happened in Aus vs Ind series last year.

Pitches are not the same, Perth is a perfect example of that, former fast bowlers haven.

Is Kohli already #3 all time in ODIs after Tendulkar and Richards?
Kohli is great but both Viv and Sachin faced far superior bowlers in tougher conditions.

AB de Villiers in my mind is still a better ODI player out of the current crop.

In history, if the game was on the line in an important match I would probably want Gilchrist, Viv, Sachin or Bevo coming out to bat for me.

Very hard to chose between AB and Kohli right now imo. Shame AB as been quite injury prone lately.

Some pitches yeah, but most pitches are the same. If anything the some of the subcontinent pitches have been tougher to bat (especially in Tests) in the last few years.

The mentality of batsman has undergone a huge change since T20's. Gone are the days when 75 runs in the first 15 over used to be considered a great start or when 300 was all but a winning score. England are a perfect example really. They begin to play actual ODI players and now can't stop scoring 300. Some fans are still stuck in the old times and seem to think 300 means the pitch is shit. Probably why Steyn is so horribly underrated in ODI's. Now it's upto the bowlers to reinvent themselves when they can no longer get away turning up and pitching it on a length. That guy from Bangladesh (can't remember his name) is fecking amazing at restricting batsman. We're probably going to see more of that in the next few years.

Hardik Pandya has matured from the headless chicken we saw in the t20 World Cup. He is also a good batsman.

He must have a deal with the devil. Gets wickets of absolute rubbish while Bumrah gets wickets of no balls and gets inside edged and top edged for four.

He has had a good second spell though. When the likes of Jadeja and Ashwin struggle, an economy of under 5 is very good

Good salvage job from Stokes and Woakes, but I'm not sure that will be enough.

There's more in this pitch than the last two though I think.

 So true. I still can't forget the shit he bowled in that T20 tournament. I honestly could have bowled better than him back then.

I wonder if Manish Pandey will get a crack at the opening spot now.

Is there any reason why Robin Uthappa hasn't had another shot?

He constantly impresses me every IPL, and as far as I can recall, he's only had one series where you took a B side to Zimbabwe. Seems like his chance has gone, but also like a waste of talent.

Also I think this is a much better use of Jake Ball with the new, ahem, ball.

I like Willey well enough, but theres no point picking him for the three overs the ball swings at the top if he's not trusted to bowl anywhere else.

Lots of keeper batsmen have been impacted by Dhoni's emergence. Naman Ojha, Uthappa, Dinesh Karthik etc. THey are unfortunate. 10 years earlier they would have been a mainstay

That said, Uthappa has played close to 50 games (was part of 2007 WC). Barely impressed

He's mostly been crap when he's been given the chance so can't really complain too much. Like a really poor mans Sehwag. Probably tries too hard when he plays for India which might explain the IPL performances.

Yeah, sorry. That wasn't very clear. Meant that that series was his only chance since the middle of the 2000s I think. I vaguely recalling him playing a fair few games early in his career, but barely getting a shot since apart from that Zimbabwe tour. I just find that a bit weird because I think he's a far better player now, but then I guess he didn't take his chance against Zimbabwe and thats that.

India's problem doesn't seem to be a death of options at the top, there is a lot of players who can play up there, but its bizarre that no one seems to be quite good enough to really make it their own.

thing is Dhawan is probably India's best opener. Was MOTS in CT2013. For some reason it simply isnt clicking.

And Kohli yet another 50. He is getting to DDG level

I don't really rate Dhawan. That Champion's Trophy, and probably the two years either side of it, he looked genuinely class, but since then I've always got the impression that he's struggled when the pressure is on, and padded his stats by bashing the lesser sides. That might be influenced by my opinion of him as a T20 player, but I think he's a long way off Rohit Sharma in this format.

That's why AB is still on top of the ODI ICC Player rankings right?
Is that your best argument?

Since the start of 2016

Kohli : 13 games 924 runs 84 average 101 SR 4 100s 5 50s
ABDV: 11 games 339 runs 42 average 90 SR 1 100s 1 50s

As far as 'current' standing goes, it's not even close.

Technique wise Rohit is probably our best LOI batsman after Kohli but his consistency is a huge doubt. He will go 20 games with less than 50 runs and then score 260

T20 sure Kohli is the man, but I was talking about ODI.

In all likelihood end of this series Kohli will go #1
