England at World Cup 2014

Not looking to criticise, I haven't seen shit loads of him, what I've seen I like but it all came from wide, I'll try get some clips of him from the middle

IMO it's not the lack of quality of the individual player, it's the way they play. Yes, the sum of the parts is not as good as it should be considering the quality of each individual player but it's up to the manager to get them playing the right way and not one single manager has been able to do that for a very long time.

We've tried the quality foreigner approach in Fabio and that got us nowhere and we've tried Christ knows how many Englishman who have lead us to misery time and time again. I don't know what to suggest next be we definitely need someone to come in and make us play in a more dynamic way.

You have teams like Chile, Colombia and Uruguay who, on paper, are not as good as England, or at least shouldn't be. It's the way that they play that takes them far in these tournaments and gets us all talking about them. I watched Colombia yesterday play against a very decent Ivory Coast side and the one thing I noticed more than anything else was the way they wanted the ball. Particularly James Rodriguez who was peeling off of his marker and asking for the ball every single time they went forward without fail. That's what we need. Then last night you had the Uruguay midfield biting at the ankles of every English player every time they got within 50 yards of their goal. That Arevalo Rios wouldn't give our midfielders a moment on the ball and he's 32 and definitely not of the same quality as probably any English player that plays in the Premier League but that doesn't mean anything because they set out a certain way, a dynamic way, and it showed. It showed that you don't need top, top players to win games at a World Cup, you just need them to be cohesive, dynamic, attack with urgency and defend with pressure.

Everyone can go on about replacing Jagielka with Smalling or getting rid of Gerrard because he is past it. I agree with both sentiments but is Smalling, Jones, Wilshere and Barkley really going to do anything to make a difference unless they play in a completely changed system?
The answer is emphatically no.

A complete overhaul is needed, not necessarily of the players but of the way they play. Having said that I think that Cole and Terry should have gone even if they are the old guard. They're better than whatever new players we could bring in. I also don't think Henderson is as bad as he is made out to be. Ok, he doesn't have the flair of Sterling or Barkley but he is a dynamic, run for 90 minutes sort of player in a similar way to Milner who I also don't think is a bad player when used correctly.

Until we learn to pass the ball and move in the final third rather than shirking the responsibility and hoping that someone else will step up we will get nowhere.

Manchester United 3

Wilson 1
Lawrence 1

What was the third appearance? Maybe Keane?
Januzaj, to be honest we weren't in a good position to play our youngsters and for some reason we didn't give some of them a run out in the capital one cup.

So what do we do for the last game ? Give some of the youngsters a go ?

Forster

Johnson - Jones - Smalling - Shaw

Barkley - Wilshere - Chamberlain

Sterling - Sturridge - Welbeck
Go out swinging.

And Leighton Baines has been hugely underwhelming. Said Shaw is a better defender months ago - and how people think Cole would have help make me weep

It'll never happen but would be the best thing to do.

Italian conspiracy. Losing to Costa Rica on purpose to eliminate us, knowing that even a draw in their last group game will put Uruguay out too

Ok.

Chance of Italy beating CR: 80%
Chance of Italy beating Uruguay: 50%
Chance of England beating CR: 70%
Chance of either Italy winning CR by more than one goal, OR England beating CR by more than one goal (with the assumption that both will win): 90%

0.8 x 0.5 x 0.7 x 0.9 = 25% chance of England going through.

A more conservative chance of Italy beating Uruguay (40%) would knock England's chances to about 20%.

@rcoobc is it to your taste? :)

Someone give Hodgson the travel agent's phone number. Need to book the tickets home on Wednesday morning

Hodgson should be fired immediately. Out with a game to spare is catastrophic failure.

What a load of shit this was. All that nonsense spouted after the Italy game from the likes of Neville about it being one of England's best performances in 15 years. That is the biggest load of nonsense I've ever heard. Smashing Holland 4-1 in Euro 96, destroying Germany 5-1 in their own backyard, beating Argentina 3-2, those are all great performances. Losing 2-1 to a decent Italian team? Get out of here!...Its this kind of idiotic thinking that holds us back. We have such low standards that anything slightly better then we expected is treated like some sort of genius.

Don't even care about the last game now. No point. In fact, I'd actually like Costa Rica to win and cement top spot in the group.

"England at World Cup 2014"

It was the best of times, it's was the worst of times. As long as you swap best for shortest.

Agreed. It's fecking sickening to hear people say it was a great performance. We could have played on for a few more hours and we still wouldn't have scored.

In some ways I'm sort of relieved it's over, it was always such a long shot we'd still have a chance. Hopefully in the last game we can make some changes, bring in jones, shaw, smalling, wilshere, barkley from the start and give them some experience.

When Neville came out with that nonsense, you knew the game was up. You knew how low the standards had been set.

Its sickening really.

Today's performance is where Italy are at the moment.

The fact that England are out is frankly an embarrassment

You need a massive clear out. Players and manager.

Time to bring in young players who actually give a shit.

 England

Seriously what did you expect with Roy fecking Hodgeson as manager? He won a few easy matches in the qualifying and people though he was the one. Thats where England failed at first.

I can't believe some of the looks i got from my mates when i said i thought we'd be out in the group stages. But even i didn't think we'd be out after just 2 games. Woeful.

I think this group system is flawed. Football should move on from this system or at least have all the groups equally compeptetive.

Now we'll have a less exciting final 16 with half of the teams coming through with fluke qualifications

Dead rubber vs Costa Rica now, drop the likes of Johnson, Jagielka, Baines, Henderson, Gerrard, Welbeck who have been rubbish and just try fight for a bit of pride.

Go out swinging.

Might aswell. It is an international friendly after all.

This wasn't a fluke. Costa Rica deserved both their wins.

I'm actually quite annoyed we're out after 2 games. After waiting 4 years for another World Cup, it's all over within a week and not even a penalty shoot-out/red card/injury to moan about.

how could that be when costa rica has played the best most exciting football in the group....

Kind of reminds me of this:
