On a serious note - I think Twitter disappearing is going to hit the Caf quite hard. Tweets are pretty much the fuel that drives a lot of discussion on here.
This is amazing to see. Musk talking a big talk via social media only to get fecked in his ass.
Huge gap in the market though, if Meta were smart they would be working 24/7 to get a Twitter replacement going.

He’s a fecking emotionally unstable man-baby. And not professional enough to hide that fact. There won’t be anyone working there in another few weeks.
I hear there's a few Devs available with pretty decent knowledge of Twitter on the job market at the moment.... it'll be interesting if one of the big tech companies takes on a lot of them in the next few weeks.
I think Google could do with it more, they've been trying to get into that space for years but have failed on each try.
That's true. Google closed down their non-youtube social media thing but might be time for another try. Then again, these companies have too much power already, perhaps a more responsible startup can take advantage.
We'll just start linking reddit threads or instagram posts probably.
I'm kind of glad its dieing. I think its a terrible, society damaging app. They gave the impression they were trying quite hard to avoid that though and there will be some probably worse alternative before long.
The problem with starting Twitter again from scratch is the vast majority of users aren’t the prolific famous accounts who can easily regain their followers on a new platform… it’s people who rarely post but have curated a feed of news, entertainment and freelance contacts over years that they can dip in an out of…. Will they be bothered to start again and search out all the same things/people on a new site?
It feels like any replacement would need an equivalent to an “Add Contacts” feature to retain more than half the user base. It’ll end up like all the other imitation apps, which is just a handful of famous accounts and sycophants shouting into the ether.
What feels more likely is a completely new sort of media platform will organically become the new thing, rather than a Twitter clone replaces that one. Like Twitter did to Facebook, etc

I'll miss it as well - my Twitter home feed is already deteriorating. It's been feeding me a mix of football, science, covid/vaccine, NHS, cute cats, data visualisation, economics, Brexit, artwork and whatever TV series I'm currently obsessed with for the past couple of years.
In amongst the dross there's been a lot of good stuff and some fascinating collaborations/interactions between people working in different fields.
For the cafe, I suspect that embedding may well be one of the next things that they turn off in the name of driving traffic to the main feed where the ads are. I already think embedding is going slow - but that might just be a coincidence, as there are a lot of things that affect that.

Yeah, exactly. Plus, even if you’re willing to spend hours trying to search out all your favourite accounts again, you’re relying on all of them to jump ship to the same platform if you want a similar experience to Twitter right now. Which probably won’t happen.

Yep, the main accounts I follow are planning to wander off to different places - Instagram, tiktok, and the various bits of Mastodon (that may or may not work together). Too much like hard work for me as a casual observer/occasional poster.
As for the ones of my football feed, I'll probably just stick to this place and go back to knowing nothing about the United women's team other that what United put in their emails.
I said for a while a really good ad revenue that hasn’t yet been tapped into is putting embedded tweets behind an ad wall.
Sigh.

If you check out plainsite.org and Aaron Greenspan (who left twitter the week or so before Musk took over) you can see all of the law suits and fraudulent activity of Musk and Tesla.

Absolutely. Same for many cons and frauds, people build up a worldview on it and when it collapses they cannot accept it.

Does anyone else think he's doing this on purpose? I just cant believe that this all is not intentional. As a programmer some of the stupidity is like buying a Michelin stared restaurant and serving burnt toast. Its too ridiculous to be accidental. I cant figure the reasoning but there must be one.

Ford helped revolutionize how the majority of people move about, then started a antisemitic newspaper in later years. Howard Hughes helped develop air travel, then turned into a recluse that didn't leave a Vegas hotel. He's far from being the first captain of industry to lose his marbles.
I did wonder but it’s too far fetched when you think how it’s destroying his brand and scaring Tesla customers and investors away. It doesn’t exactly bode well for any hopes he has of making SpaceX publicly listed.
Is there a way to save your Following list? I'd like to know who to look up if it does go down and everyone switches to something else.
