Gaming Elden Ring - Fromsoftware

I know I'm very late to the party and not exactly providing any new insights here, but being about 100 hours into my first playthrough now (in just 3 weeks or so ), it really is every bit as special as the critical and commercial reception made it seem. The sense of exploration and discovery is something I haven't really experienced in any other open world since Breath of the Wild, or Outer Wilds if we're including a less traditional game world (though that is on another level in terms of discovery).

Feels like I still have a lot of game left; I've only just made it to the Altus Plateau a couple of game hours ago. I dread to think what my final play time will look like with DLC included. This has a good chance of taking the second place after Bloodborne for my favourite From Soft game. Nothing will top that game, though.

Pretty much how I feel too, though I do love the combat of Sekiro as well.

I had Sekiro just behind Bloodborne as well, I just really love the more focused combat of both those games. It made for more tightly balanced boss design in my opinion. Elden Ring obviously doesn't have that, but I love its world design and exploration enough to make up the difference.

Been playing this over the past couple of months and it is fantastic. Nearly 150 hours in and still have 3 areas (Mohgwyn Palace, Crumbling Azula, and the region north of Consecreted Snowfield. which you get teleported to). Gone for a Dex build with Bloodhound Fang as the primary weapon and feel I am way overpowered, especially when I can summon my Mimic.

You'll soon get knocked down a few pegs. Trust me.

That's probably going to be me soon as well, I fear. Considering I've done all of the underground stuff before moving on to Altus, everything feels way too easy now and I'm waiting for the game to catch up to me again.

Although I have to say, doing the underground first already gave me plenty of challenge. As a pure dex melee character the duo Gargoyle fight, Fortissax and that absolute cnut Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader were not easy. I ended up loving the latter two fights but the Gargoyles was not exactly From Soft at their best. They tricked us into believing they were masters of duo boss design with O&S but it feels like since then, most or all of their duo bosses have been garbage.

The areas you've mentioned are basically the point where the game's difficulty curve goes vertical - that overpowered feeling probably won't last*

* - unless you summon Mimic, that guy stomps anything.

Ha you'll be grand, good luck!

Malenia took about cumulative half a days worth of gaming to beat - once you have all her moves tied down the only real bullshit one to dodge/evade is Waterfowl Dance where you have to time your rolls perfectly and get the direction of it perfect too, 3 times in about 2 seconds.

Consort Radahn on the other hand is pure bullshit. It isn't even the mechanics being that hard. It's the sensory overload on phase 2 that blasts the screen with 10000 flashing lights and will give anyone epiliptic shock and you're too distracted by them to time your evasions and rolls properly. Then there's that bullshit nuclear bomb attack he does which 1 hits you instantly if you don't time your run perfectly.

Eventually I had to go naked and get light rolls just to beat him. Was really annoying.

The Radahn fight sucked. Messmer is how you do a good difficult but fair boss.

I also hated the Scarlet Rot insect queen thing.

Getting pretty close to the end of the base game now I think, arrived at the inner part of Haligtree yesterday night and I've already finished Mohgwyn Palace and Farum Azula. To say that progress has slowed down in these endgame areas would be an understatement, it's the kind of brutal slog that was usually reserved for DLC in previous From Soft games. Makes me really worried about the actual DLC.

Still, the bosses so far have been super rewarding (except Godskin duo, feck their reviving bullshit), with Mohg Lord of Blood and Maliketh providing that classic transition from "how the hell am I ever going to do this" to suddenly clicking and fighting them like a Jedi master. Especially Maliketh, his moves were so hard to parse the first +-10 attempts at his phase, he'd just obliterate me in seconds. Until he didn't, and then I found out he has practically no health and dies pretty quickly.

Now I'll finally get to find out just how much of a roadblock a certain upcoming boss fight will be...

The next boss after malekith is probably the easiest non optional boss in the game.

I assume you mean a certain magic spammer waiting for me at the Erdtree Sanctuary? I actually died to him already before realizing I hadn't used the Haligtree medallion yet, so he'll have to wait a little longer for the rematch. I expect he's going to be a cakewalk after the one that's waiting for me at the end of Elphael.

Yeah

I think I've heard "I am Malenia. Blade of Miquella." about 30 times now and I've never gotten her health below 70% or so. Never seen anything like it in my life.

Takes a lot of deaths to get used to waterfowl dance.

Give it another 30 goes and you might see her 2nd phase.

Seriously though, she can be staggered. Which helps seeing as her attacks heal her, so you cant get hit. Git gud and all basically.

Rivers of blood spam and you’ll end up saying ‘What 1st phase?’.

One day I will tell myself I will beat her without using Rivers of Blood but I know it’s not true.

I did get bored of it though, I never finished the DLC because of how easy it was.

Yeah, for now it feels like one of the more unreasonable attacks I've ever seen in a video game, don't really see how I'm going to dodge it with any consistency, but we'll see.

I've seen that mentioned a lot but I don't really enjoy abusing OP attacks like that. It'll be the hard way, however long it takes. I suspect this will take the crown from Absolute Radiance as the hardest boss I've ever fought.

You thought the dlc was too easy? Its certainly easier once you find out you have to collect those shadow things to buff to even out the initial difficulty spike but i don't think its too easy. Got stuck on messmer untill i had collected those fragments and consort radahn had to get a nerf.

I summoned someone to help me. Got a guy with zero armour and a pot on his head. He helped me absolutely wreck her.

Shut up you did not get Let Me Solo Her?
Oh shit I actually remember that, I think it was before that person became well known and I never took much notice of the name. I think I assumed there were loads of players who were doing that.

Yeah I’m sure there were loads of copy cats but they did thousands of Melania summons for people so it’s also very possible you got them.

I never finished it, but I beat that Messmer guy on my third try without trying, just Rivers of Blood spam.

It made it a bit trivial and I felt like I was wasting the DLC by doing it so I stopped with the intention of starting again but never got around to it.

Saying that, I struggled a lot more on the magic guy with two swords near the start of it.

It’s one of my favourite games ever so il definitely try it again, just need to try a different build for once.

Well yeah once i changed to a bleed build he wasn't too hard. I got him with my sorcerer build though on my 1st playthrough just barely.

I used Rivers of Blood for Malenia but that was it. Rest of the time was my trusty old Bloodhound's Fang. Even got it back out for quite a bit of the DLC.

You were pretty close, just got her to the second phase after 60-70 attempts. She promptly one-shotted me with her opening attack. Good times.

Yup, standard procedure that.
I dont think i ever got good at the 2nd phase, just desperately tried to kill her in the 20 seconds she lets you live.

Got her! Hands are still shaking, fecking hell. That took around 100 attempts, double the amount it took me to defeat Orphan of Kos, the previous record holder for From Soft bosses, but it was worth it. Once I got into the rhythm, I really enjoyed it. It's a brilliant fight, even if Waterfowl Dance is completely unreasonable and a bit janky (seriously, wtf is the camera for that third flurry?).

With pure melee, no summons etc, it's probably one of the best 1v1 fights I've ever played, like a dance where every wrong move ends in death. I even ended up appreciating Waterfowl Dance, despite how bs it is. It's just so intimidating and makes the fight incredibly tense. Now all that's left is to end the base game and move to the DLC.

Finished the base game now (and did some cleanup for the platinum - save scummed for the endings of course), took me 170 hours all in all. Phenomenal game but I'm a bit annoyed by those last few story bosses, they didn't feel particularly great. Although Godfrey's first phase was pretty good, and Radagon as a standalone fight wasn't bad either, it just gets ruined by having to repeat it for each go at Elden Beast. I guess it's sort of fitting that the final boss fight perfectly highlights From Soft's greatest flaw: oversized bosses with a terrible camera. Anyway, on to the DLC.

Damn, well done. I can't imagine solo-ing Malenia without using a busted weapon or something similar.
Two things made it very manageable: reducing equip load to light and an emergency medium shield with 100% physical block. The light load does wonders for outpacing/outrolling Waterfowl Dance's first flurry from medium range, while the emergency shield can take the entire first flurry if she does it from close range. Sure, that heals her a bit, but it's better than starting over. Learning perfect reactions to all her patterns certainly wasn't easy, but once learned it feels pretty repeatable. I definitely trust myself to repeat her fight over something like Hoarah Loux and his endless spamming of grabs with space-time continuum bending hitboxes.
