Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

Terrible signing, act of pure desperation from Ed in order to appease the fans. This one wont work Ed, if you dont deliver Sancho then Cavani wont suffice. Guy has been injured much of last season, mostly muscle injuries and at his age that's not a good sign. Cavani is the type of player that likes to get on the end of of crosses, get himself into the box, so that also goes against our style of play as we dont have wingers who can put in good crosses.

This stinks of being a Woodward signing rather than an Ole signing

Romano now confirming we have “got it for a bit less” than what they were asking, as expected so late in the window, both he and his agent have had to drop their demands.
So yeah, you should believe my “guess” as it was more common sense logic than pure guesswork.
Are you so sad that you wait 8/9 hours to come back with a comment. Get a life

Juve can still sell Ramsey, we wont be able to sell Cavanni.

200k for a bench player?
Who om earth wants to take up Ramseys wages? And isn't he a bench player as well. I am not saying that getting Cavani is a great deal I am just saying that it isn't terrible either.

The shit slinging tonight is ridiculous.

It's possible to be annoyed at the board and the way this summer has been handled, but still think Cavani is a decent signing. You can be happy with signing a top quality and experienced back up striker, without suddenly being labelled a Glazer lover.

There are a lot of United fans who need to stop living their lives on the back of every single gobshite with a twitter account. Wait until the full details emerge before throwing toys out of prams and believing the worst case scenario from the off.

At the same time, when people are expressing legitimate frustration at things like leaving our transfer business til the last days of the window when everything has escalated into a circus and the season is already well under way, that is ok too. People should be allowed to criticise that incompetence without being called precious or entitled.

Everyone needs to take a minute and breathe.

Very sensible and true post. Unfortunately, it will go WAY above most heads, as it's not being negative.

Why if a team brings in a player with little time left in the window is it called a panic buy? Ever considered the possibility that we are trying to offload players first to free up wages and bring in funds before we can actually buy someone. Not thrilled with the Cavani signing, if the reported fee and wages are around 15m then its not a bad option to have.

Yes cavani has been available all summer and who knows the club probably had him as a backup option the whole time. By not selling more of the deadwood its left our finances short on were we need to be this window. Still time to complete Sancho if we get smalling sold.
That went well also. Damn that Andreas, it's his fault we didnt sign a striker on 1st July when they were available.

If City were also after Cavani this would be a good point. But they aren't.

It’s a good point because City would have been better off having a 33 yr old Cavani in their squad than literally no back up striker.
I’ll say it again, Cavani fills a hole, it’s a decent transfer for squad depth and options.
So far it’s a dog turd window, but people should judge each transfer in isolation.

Would rather have Cavani on 1+1 deal signed on a free than splash like £30m on King.

True. It's a bit bizarre that they are our best options though.

We did need a better alternative than Ighalo and I'm happy that we believe Martial is a guaranteed starter up front. We've seen at e.g. Spurs how hard it can be to convince good strikers to be Kane's replacement, and they've wasted a lot of money on the few players in their prime they managed to convince. Maybe it is the case that only very young or very old forwards are suited to that role. Larsson, Sheringham and others have done it well in the past.

We could use someone with exceptional movement and he probably can play the Greenwood role well enough, but it seems more likely he'll free up Martial to play deeper on occasion. He is quite a physical player though, so there's big question marks over how dramatically he'll decline.

Much better option than Ighalo. I know he is 33 but hopefully his fitness is good enough. I mean cr7 is 35, messi is 33. Age should not be the issue here especially as a rotation player. Gives us option to rotate with Martial as well as a target man type threat that we don't have right now. Also, if he stays fit he can start as well in some games. Can anyone tell me whether he played on the wing for PSG?

We are getting a potentially world class striker for free. He can do more than heading for Christ's sake. Ighalo is too poor and Martial is still inconsistent. We need depth.

Go watch some Cavani compilations on YouTube and feel happier.

Calm down, guys. Is it a panic buy? Probably. Smells like it. HOWEVER. Is it a shit deal like previous panic buys? Maybe not. It's reportedly around 200K/week. Some even say it is 155K/week. Whatever it is, it's confirmed not as high as Sanchez and still within the wage structure.

Also, it is a 1 year with option for 1 more deal. So if he flops, he's out next year.

It's very clear he is to replace Ighalo who is leaving in Jan. Cavani does not need to hit the ground running. He has until Dec to get match fitness. More than enough time.

Cavani is also a real class striker. He'll hopefully be able to fill in and help guide and transition to our younger strikers, like Greenwood. He'll also provide better competition for Martial.

He's won many trophies and his experience will hopefully have an impact similar to Zlatan. The influence Zlatan had was so obvious last time in giving the team leadership and confidence. Hopefully Cavani will be the same.

He's never a world class striker anymore. You go an watch the you tube clips. Think you wont find many from the last 18months

No clue how he will do or how much we pay him. What angers me is the fact that we wait 2 months without signing anybody and then end up with a 33 year old on a free. That just show what a mess we are

But neither City nor Liverpool would sign a Cavani, so sorry, but it isn't. City preferred to play Sterling, we would play
Rashford.

I have my doubts, but I guess it all depends on what the options were. If we don't have money to spend at all, then this is fine and much needed. I would also rather we get Cavani than someone like King for 20m odd.

It does not change the shambolic transfer window we had, and we should really be looking to hire someone to look at the football side of things. This does feel a little like panic buying, but then again we are desperate for options.

Teddy Sheringham was 33 when he came in as our 4th choice striker. Did he make an impact? Was he a success? Absolutely. He scored in the CL and FA cup final. One of the reasons why we were able to achieve the treble was because we had 4 decent quality strikers. Cavani on a free is an upgrade to what we currently have. He also has different elements to his game, similar to Sheringham he has great vision and makes loads of assists.

he wasn’t 33 he was 31. However your general point is valid.

I don’t know whether he will be a success, none of us do.

the overreaction and drama from some of our fans is a sight to behold. Pure embarrassment.

It’s an embarrassment that VdB, Cavani, & some kid from Citeh will constitute our ‘big’ transfers this window.

I'm actually fine with this this.
If the one year deal is true with an option, all it is costing us is wages and a few agent.
It's not ideal that he is our only real option here, but I'd rather spend on wages for a year than sign Joshua King or some other striker for the sake of it.

I'm gonna be optimist here and say I hope this means by saving here, we're spending elsewhere.
Also optimistic, but this one year short term opens up the possibility to have a free spot when Haalands buyout clause is active.

Then again, I'm not sure if our board thinks more than a week ahead

Good signing IMO. We need more options at CF, and this deal is low risk, if it doesnt work out we just dont renew. The comparisons with Alexis are wrong, like comparing apples with pears.

We still need other signings, a RW being the obvious but good move in my view.

Reading the comments here, you would think we are signing an obscure non league player.

What do people expect ? we are looking for a back up stricker, Ighalo is leaving in less than 3 months. Martial is misfiring these last games. Us being short on RW does not mean that we shouldn't take care of our other needs (CM, ST and LB).

Rashford is on 200K per week, Pogba on 300K. Giving Cavani a 175K salary especially when we got him as a free agent is acceptable. At least we have an experienced back up striker in the team now. One that was used to winning.

Some people are really dense here. How is 175K similar to 300K ? Do people think that other agents do not get paid ? that it's just for Cavani's agent ? Hazard's agent was paid 6M when moving to Chelsea and that was in 2012 for a paid transfer. How are people suprised by 10M today, for an agent of a player that we're getting for free.

Some of you are just miserable and want to moan all day.

And you guys are ranting left and right based on figures that could be completely made up.

His injury record has been terrible the last 2 years but was pretty fit and hardly missed a match before that. If he can stay fit, he’ll be a good signing for us. Much better than Ighalo for sure.

When was the last time Cavani participated in a proper training? Or played a match? I fear it's going to be a long time before he's just about fit. He's been a world class player, but I'm not sure he's good enough anymore. At the very least, he is an improvement over Ighalo.

Gunna take him weeks and weeks to get anywhere near as sharp as he needs to be. Especially given his injury record will need managing. He will look rusty as he'll in his first few games, and this place will go nuts.

our horrendous, toxic fanbase ladies and gentleman.

Ive not seen anyone suggest a viable alternative. We need a back up striker, one that’s likely to be better than Ighalo.

This is what we have got. is it exciting, not terribly, but then when is a back up striker going to be exciting? Did anyone expect a great player to come to us and not be first choice?

yes it’s late in the window, and not ideal. This is not an ideal summer, we are in the middle of a global pandemic.

I hope people actually get behind him when he plays.

it’s nothing like the Sanchez deal. Add up the figures, the difference is astonishing

Yet another sensible post. Too many of these and social media would come to a halt.

When all things considered, Cavani is a decent signing. People really need to start understanding football economics. We have only recently started seeing players leave the club, which now frees up money for a player like Cavani.

Should Manchester United's planning be a lot better? Definitely. But sometimes you have to seize upon opportunities when they are correct for you.

Also, we have a 2 week international break. He'll get at least 2 good weeks of training before we are back.

Not a fan personally. Certainly can't hurt having a striker of his calibre and experience to call on, although we won't actually be able to call on him for a month as he'll be so out of shape. Two seasons or 1+1 contract would mean we won't get stuck in a Sanchez situation again, at least. Overall though it's a classic Woodward signing - last minute, much more about reporting a famous name to bump our share price than actually acquiring the players we need on the pitch.

If he's used as an upgrade on Ighalo, I'll be happy. Mustn't take so much as a second of game time away from Martial.

No we already have Phil the hole Jones taking up the physio bench.
He’s not a right sided attacker and if we manage to get him fit do we drop Martial and feck him off to sulksville yet again? Signing makes nose sense what so ever. We needed a right sided attacker, so Greenwood could then rotate and understudy Martial.
Window has been shite once more, United sure know how to get expectations up, then crush them. Donny should be a very good signing, but the club have spent far too long pissing about trying to get a discount on good players, so we’ve ended up with a striker who was good 3 years ago, it is now prone to breaking and has declined a lot over the last 2 seasons.

Some people really need to get a bit of context on this deal for Cavani. He's at exactly the right age where he won't stop the development of Greenwood, Rashford and Martial. If anything they can learn from him. He's on a free albeit with relatively high wages.

People say it stinks of desperation. I'd wager he's not being brought in to fill the RW role that's for sure. If the deal for Sancho and or Telles had been completed, I doubt there would have been too many shits given about the Cavani deal. Its a position we needed more quality in depth and its been addressed. Cold light of day with the age of players at the club and Cavani pedigree, its not as bad a deal as a lot are making out.
