Dunkirk - Christopher Nolan's next film

Not really. It was pretty much a case of lets all regroup and try again a few years later.

If Dunkirk hadn't worked out, to the degree that it did, the regrouping would probably have taken years longer.

The Germans still wouldn't have won the war, though. More likely the Soviets would liberate/conquer a larger part of Central and maybe even Western Europe.

Nah. If the Soviets were making that much progress, we would've went straight into France instead of chipping away at North Africa and Italy.

 Fair.

It's just I usually love Nolan films, so feeling left out.
 I'll admit that the trailers have left me feeling a little dry, but I'm not sure if that's just because I'm completely missing the tone of the film. I was the same with Interstellar until about 15 minutes in when it all started to come together.

Nolan is a very good director. My only complain is that someone should really try to explain him the expression "Less is more".

His every movie is monumental. And I get the impression he tries to show it with every sequence.

Looking forward to this, nevertheless.

The invasion of France happened more or less as soon as it was both viable and actually have a chance at succeeding. There's a reason Italy came first (and North Africa before that). Of course, you could make the argument that a Soviet push further into Poland and then Germany would have forced an even larger portion of the German military to the East, leaving France nigh undefended.

Nolan makes some of the best films around. But it seems that the cool thing to do is to hate everything he makes.

On the other hand Quentin Tarantino is hailed as a genius with his over the top bullshit. Baffling.

A post of two halves.

In a way, he is Real Madrid of the movie world?

On a serious note, didn't notice so much hate for his work.

Two weeks left for this! Can't wait. Always buzzing for a Nolan picture!

Fascinated by WWII. This is also the first Nolan film to be based on a true event. The Prestige, Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception and Interstellar are all fictional. His earlier work - Memento, Following, Insomnia - were where he didn't have the big budgets at his disposal so he did stories on smaller scale. He's very strong with those sorts of scripts. I loved The Prestige, which which was his last smaller project. Would be nice if he made a film like that again.

The Prestige is hardly small though. The cast were all A-lister.

You're kidding? That's nuts.

Seems to be getting 5 stars from everyone.
Heard it has the Oscar for best film in the bag already, while the Oscars are still more than half a year away.

Worry not though, it will be in fashion to hate and everyone praising it will be a Nolan fanboy.

Watching this tomorrow. Very high expectations, looks like an atypical Nolan movie which will probably be a nice change of pace after the last few disappointments.

EDIT: Just caught up on some reviews ... already looks like it could be one of the most universally acclaimed movies of all time.

I've never been super high on Nolan but this is pretty, pretty good. The wide scope and documentation of war is a much better fit for Nolan than talking about love in space.

So this thread will follow the same course right?

Everybody happy about the reviews. Then the initial people will see it and like it and say spot on.
Then the initial person to say the hype got to them and in fact they are disappointed cos it didnt match the hype, whether they liked it or not on its own merit.
etc.

Looking forward to this.
A lot of the traditional outlets seem to love it but a few of the newer critics on youtube etc are complaining that there isn't enough character development from the soldiers in peril. I haven't seen this yet but wouldn't being trapped by crazed Nazis with 99% chance of dying be enough reason to emotionally invest in them?

Reviews are off the scale. Though I wont be lectured into watching it on a '3D IMAX' thats 20 miles away and costs £25 a ticket, local independent cinema it is for me :)

It's not 3D. But Imax/70 mm will be worth it.

It is, however, utterly incredible. Best Nolan since The Prestige for me. Whether it's even better than that, time and multiple viewings will tell.

98% approval in Rotten Tomatoes with 9.1/10 average rating, which makes this by far the highest rated Nolan's movie there.

It must be good.

I was thinking the IMDb score must be because of one d teens bigging it up?

Might explain user scores but surely not the metacritic scores?

That's why I'm thinking otherwise now. It's almost like it seems too high to be legit. I think it's gonna be good either way though

Yeah I wasn't all that interested in seeing it until I saw the reviews. Saving Private Ryan perfected the WW2 movie for me and then things like Pearl Harbour took the good out of it. So I didn't bother with Hacksaw Ridge, Letters From Iwa Jimo when they came out even though they got great reviews.

This reads as "anyone that disagrees with MY opinion is wrong!". A touch of hypocrisy in your post, as well as a clear contradiction. Nonetheless, Tarantino is a genius, Nolan is good. Both deserve credit for producing some very good films.

More like was a genius. He hasn't been able too reinvent himself that much. His two best movies are the first 2 movies he made.

Gotta love how Tarantino is still hailed as a genius. When all he does is repeat himself while taking little or no risks. The guy is literally remaking his own films at this point. The only difference being the heating in the room in which everyone is stuck in.
