Film Dune

Going to the cinema for the first time in years to watch this today. My main concern is someone is going to be a dickhead and be loud throughout the film.

First time since 2019 that i've been to a theatre. It was worth it for the sound design alone. Enjoy! :)

Why are so many of you lot just putting up with people behaving like twats in the cinema? I don't enjoy confrontation (to the surprise of many on here I'd guess) but when I've paid good money to watch a film I'm buggered if some twat is going to spoil it for me and everyone else near them.

Add to this, things to do to try and avoid the riff raff

1. Go to showings that are quieter if you can
2. Avoid cinemas in city centres
3. Buy a premium priced ticket (like IMAX for example, riff raff probably wouldn’t pay big)
4. Check out independent cinemas, cinemas with one screen for example

So where do people see Dune Messiah heading, considering Denis has diverted from the source material somewhat ?
Though Chani seems to be going her own way for the time being I do believe she'll eventually be drawn back to Paul. Whether that be in combat against the Astreide's or , the likeliest one, she's pregnant. There was a clear , though short, intimate love scene between the two. The vision that Paul had regarding Chani's bloodied hands may come into play here as , in the book, she unfortunately passes away while giving birth to twins ( Leto II and Ghanima). I don't think Denis has any qualms playing with the timeline here. Its as much as his retelling of the book now, which obviously will upset Dune fans.

The second option for me. The first one would be a major difference to the books, far bigger (for the implications) than any other so far, and likely bigger than is common in book adaptions

Will we see a guild navigator in the next film? One plays a very big role in the book but it's going to be a test to put one on screen and it look good.

I wold not be surprised if they just cut that character completely and change the storyline.

Can you quickly remind me of the role the navigator plays in a spoiler?

I guess the answer to the deviation question will come from how seriously he takes sticking to book canon, right? If he genuinely has no intention for the other books and no studio is going to pick them up for a theatrical release, do any of the following book plot lines matter? He can take certain characters in new directions, completely re-write things because they'll never exist in his universe. I don't think he'll completely change Herberts vision or themes. But I can see certain characters mentioned in spoiler posts going in wildly different directions.

Part of the plot to kill Paul. A guild navigators presence cancels out Paul's ability to "see" what's happening.

There's some pretty weird stuff in Messiah. I'm surprised they're even doing it. I don't think the story needs it. The ending of Dune 2 is a good enough ending to that version of the story.

Perhaps...but in a very very muted fashion? I could see a navigator being "represented" by one of those shown in Part 1 so it keeps his "realism" at the forefront.
I feel like he kept this "space is mysterious" aspect going when the houses arrived above the planet, you only see shimmering details arriving in Orbit, no big spectacle of grand house ships coming in.
Talking about Part 1:

“They were Guild representatives. They were not Navigators. We don’t see the Navigators in this first part,” Villeneuve said. “That was the one of the challenges of this adaptation – I was trying to keep mystery alive as much as possible. We don’t show the Emperor, we don’t see the Spacing Guild Navigators. There’s a lot of characters that are mentioned or that are in the background that we don’t see right away. I tried to keep all the space traveling as mysterious as possible, like almost bringing some kind of mysticism or sacred relationship with that part of the movie. Everything involving space is just evocated and very mysterious.”

I wouldn't be so sure to say Denis isn't capable of executing the future stories of Dune where 'batshit' ideas/concepts are introduced, basically we're talking about Leto the II.
There's a fair few concepts in the past two films alone that illustrate Denis is well capable of producing very good results.
You just need to look at how he integrated and executed the scenes of the unborn Alia Atreides.

If this was a Nolan film, then I'd agree that some of the more insane surreal ideas would very likely get pushed to the side.

Thanks! And agreed, the first book works really well as a standalone, after that it gets all abstract and internal

I think Herbert himself said that he only wrote Messiah because the audience didn't seem to get the point of the first book. These 2 films are a bit more upfront with the overall message so I don't really feel the story needs a 3rd film.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see a dozen more films, including adaptations of the god-awful prequels written by his idiot son.

Also, I think you may get more foreshadowing dreams in Part 1 than Part 2 regarding where this could be heading , if Denis isn't going to subvert the audience, in Messiah.

He could just portray the Navigators like the aliens in Arrival if he wants to keep it mysterious, no? Out of focus creatures in misty tanks.

Christopher Walken is a much more ridiculous figure to just drop into this Universive IMO.

It's up for debate but judging from the first movie, Villeneuve has no qualms about removing or under-using characters. There were prominent people (and big actors) in Part 1 who died and he didn't change the timeline around to alter that. We know from the books some return but for the most part he followed what Herbert set up. I expect though judging from the final scene that Chani will be given more life than in the book, perhaps expanding the psychological hurt that comes from Paul's shift in character, and perhaps also enlarging the story to be about the the role of the Fremen in the holy war. I'm also expecting Alia to be a much bigger character next time round because she's far more central to the story from this point.

Walken was a tad underwhelming in his performance.
I was thinking who could've executed the role simlary. Hopkins, Sutherland, Eastwood ?

I like what DV did with Chani. Gives her more depth and independence. Also, Zendaya performance was very good.

Going to have to be a big time skip for that to happen, if they want to use Anya Taylor-Joy in the role.

I guess they could say "because of what happened in the womb, she physically ages faster" but although the actress could probably pass as late teens (she's 27 now), could Zendaya and Chalomet play 15/20 years older than they look now?

It's fun to speculate and i'm sure the Director will come up with something good. Although I am a long term book fan, I don't really care if the films change it up so long as its good.

They'll age them with cgi and make up prosthetics .

Kill Zendaya in a prologue, re-cast Paul as Cillian Murphy.

At the very least make Florence Pugh do a Walken impression to match Butler doing Skarsgard.

There's a few quotes from King of New York she could've used.

I don’t know how much family the Emperor has in the books, but they should just keep introducing them with broader and broader Walken impressions…

I think they can get away with handwaving it. How old are the characters, really? Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson are a bit young for how old Paul is supposed to be / Chamalet actually is (at least to our standards).

Come on, lads. The Bladerunner remake was a bit of a slog. Loads of atmosphere and cool honking noises but dull as feck. With an annoyingly flaky plot.
As a Blade Runner fanboy I thought it was very good, but still raise an eyebrow when I see people say it was better than the original. Jared Leto's presence alone takes it down a notch.

First of all, it was a sequel, not a remake.

Second of all, it was awesome.

Thirdly, anyone who refers to Vangelis's score as honking should be castrated.

Blade Runner 2049 is not as good aesthetically as the original and is too slow. But it has a better plot than the original movie.

I’m maybe being harsh. I could maybe agree it was very good? At a push. Although it was more likely just good. I get triggered when I see it being called brilliant though. The Dune movies have been miles better (especially the first one) Ditto the original Bladerunner, which was much better than the sequel*.

*remake, whatever
