Maybe you're right. Keane himself said that he grew up in a dangerous area were buildings would be bombed to smithereens while kids like himself were playing football. However would Keane push himself to the limit if stripped of his demons? That argument is common with maverick geniuses in other areas such as the Caravaggio. Would Keane have kept his demons at bay if he didn't met Sir Alex who turned this shy guy into his Gregor Clegane? After all the same rabid dog who snapped at everyone towards the end of his career remained composed when Clough punched him even though he could have easily killed the guy if he wanted to.That's the type of philosophical what ifs I tend to avoid getting involved in.

Therefore as a player there's no doubt that Keane would walk into any team. He is a complete midfielder with more class than most players currently playing in his position. If the likes of Matic, Fabinho, Rodri, Matuidi and co can play at top clubs then so can Keane in his prime. Would his character fit in with this generation though? I can see him do well with the likes of Bruno who share his ethos. I can't say the same with most of the other players. Can you imagine how Keane would act if surrounded by the likes of Lingard, Lindelof and Pogba? I shiver at the thought.
Keane grew up in Cork!

How are you baffled by them when you answer yourself in the next sentence?

Good player, but it feels like we’re trying to fill a hole that doesn’t exist in the team.

I’ll be more sold on him if we can sign 2-3 more players, so perhaps it’s just the order of them that’s puzzling me.
Eh, a hole that doesn’t exist within the team?

We currently have 1 player out of our squad of 30+ that can carry the ball out of our defence, and be a box To box engine. That’s Paul Pogba. Not only can DVDB play the Pogba role, can also sit besides Pogba and play the Matic role.

So do you see Matic and Pogba playing 55+ games each this season? Because I certainly do not. They can all play about 40 each between the 3 of them in 2 positions and stay fit, sharp and rested, it’s an ESSENTIAL signing if you want to compete at the top.

Either that or keep playing Fred, Pereira and Fred when we need to rest/rotate/sub players?

He reminds me of a more offensive Herrera which isn’t a bad thing.

it seems he prefers to play on the right side of the pitch also which could give us good balance as Bruno usually likes pulling towards the left more.

will be interesting whether we stick to a 4231 or use a 433 this season.

Pogba too!

Key thing for me in this signing is that he is technical, calm on the ball, looks to progress the play rather than first thinking about playing backwards, not afraid to beat his man.

It’s why I preferred Fred over Matic or McT in the middle of the park and I think Donny is a better player than either of the 3.

Hope it comes through! Very excited. Really wonder WTF Dortmund we’re asking for Sancho

An excellent buy. He can cover the whole midfield area if we have injuries. DM, CM, AM, he can cover any of these positions. But most of all he is tenacious and a ball winner who can change a game and control this area.

Heres hoping this will play a role in our negotiations for Sancho.
We've always needed 3 to 4 players. I don't think it was ever going to affect Sancho's signing plus I firmly believe there'll be some exits in due course. We should be able to recoup somewhere in the region of 50m for a few players at least. I think it was stupid not to accept Roma's fee for Smalling

I never visited Ireland let alone lived there during Keane's childhood. I am only recalling an old interview of his were he said that his neighbourhood was far from safe.

I’m pleased the club have moved on and not allowed the Sancho saga to stall our business. I suspect we’ll use the DVDB valuation as a negotiation tool to bring the price (or addons) down slightly.

We’re certainly still in for him and if we land him it will be an excellent window.

You’re right on Smalling, hopefully there’s still legs on him moving on this summer.

He's been compared to Ramsey, Muller, Lampard, Hererra and others. Safe to say, we've got a vague idea about the player.

I don't think he'll be an automatic starter with Pogba and Bruno. I'd say he'll be among the 14-16 group of core players who'll be in and out on most matchdays.

I can't stress enough on the category of player status within the team as undisputed, rotational and fringe players.

There were no buildings bombed in Cork in the 70s or 80s lad. Cork is as far from Belfast as you can get in Ireland so he never said that.

You're also completely misinterpreting his character/personality if you think he would have ever entertained the thought of hitting the boss back. He didn't have to keep his cool, he thought he deserved it from what he's said which I find a little odd but there you go.

City and Liverpool both have great options in midfield beyond their starting 11s, and this signing is us making that next step towards the top.

Hope so. Fingers crossed there's negotiations going on to move some on, if only to guarantee them 1st team football and more playing time;Jones and Pereira are not going to be playing that much

I am a little confused that we haven't addressed other areas of the team/squad as a priority. I feel like Ole trusts Fred and McTominay more than our other squad players, so signing someone in their position feels strange. Especially when the players ahead of him, are arguably two of the best in our first 11. I haven't seen enough of him to pass any judgement on his ability, but at his age, price and reputation, it could be a shrewd piece of business.

It's going to be a long season, we need reinforcements, hopefully more to come.

They are looking a bit thin there IMO. The last couple of games I've watched they looked a bit clueless. I know the CS isn't be all and end all but Arsenal looked comfortable against their midfield by the end. Could be smoke and mirrors of course and they hit the ground running, plus they may still recruit one or two

If anything Pogba has more to fear from DVDB. He has to step up a bit more

From what I've read since yesterday;

-He's not much of a ball progressor. He just looks to pass to ball to a teammate quickly in a clear passing lane.
He doesn't attempt many line-breaking passes. Doesn't tend to get involved that much in the Build-up/Progression Phases.

-So it doesn't sound like he can play the Pogba role. (Main ball progressor/Primary deep playmaker). Not sure if Ole'll use him
in the Matic role either, because it'll limit his off-the-ball prowess.

-Like it's been said numerous times in this thread, his main quality is his intelligence and off-the-ball movements. One of the best
in that regard. He scans the pitch and is aware of where his teammates are. He "attacks the space" vacated so proficiently.

-His best offensive work is in and around the box. He uses his great movements and quick flicks to create dangerous situations.

-Basically he needs great passers to find him in those pockets of space and he'll do damage.

They still have 5+ viable options in their midfield for 3 positions such as Henderson, Keita, Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner

They can afford to rotate depending on their opponents. Ole had no confidence in rotating his strongest side, and very reluctantly used Fred for Matic at the end, but even then he would sub him off for Matic early on.

No buildings being bombed in Cork. Its a lovely part of the world

Well, I'd imagine you can't just buy players in the order you want, you have to respond to what's happening elsewhere, too. It's been reported that the interest in VDB had picked up, so presumably that (seemingly uncomplicated) transfer became a priority.

Exactly, we have obviously been in talks with Sancho for a long period of time, however we are struggling to either agree the fee with Dortmund, or how the installments will be paid. In terms of DVB, I read that our interest was always there, but other clubs expressed an interest which forced us to move quicker. (not that's a bad thing)

I have to disagree. It became obvious to me that he didn’t trust them and used them as sparingly as possible. Usually to give Matic a rest or when a game was already won, or for the final 5 minutes.

There's a place called Skibbereen in Cork. Are you sure he wasn't just talking about Skibbereen?
