Xavi and Fabregas on the same axis horizontally failed for Barca. Cesc an horizonal above Xavi worked for Spain. And by worked I mean was above average. Nothing near the expectations which were not unrealistic to start of with. Not a fan of them together TBH

Yup. Strange pick quite frankly, pretty sure Cole has links to some very useful picks for EAP.

Yeah pretty much this. Admittedly they were a lot better for Spain but in an all time draft perhaps little underwhelming.

On a positive note Cesc would be rated better than Sindelar in that role being a modern player.

Thought he’d go for one “invincible” central defender who often gets overlooked but not much between him and Rio, Vidic etc..

Since I'm not going to be playing a tiki-taka/possession game the Barca failure is not really a apt comparison. It was a unique team tbh! I just wanted a comfortable passing/creative midfield able to feed the trio above.

Peak Fabregas would be a fantastic player next to Xavi, pinging his long balls towards Ronaldo's and Gullit's runs. It's just that his peak was so long ago, people already forgot it.

the cnut Chelsea defender is quite underrated in general by opposition fans IMO.
He was fantastic in his own right.

Quite unlikely at the moment, both Man City and Belgium were a little shit in earlier seasons, so, it's more than likely to be closer to now...

I don't think it was to do with tiki-taka to be honest. They were quite similar players even with the age gap. Obviously Iniesta is quite different to Xavi and hence worked the way it did.
To put a more obvious example in a different position, playing Xavi and Cesc is kind of like playing 2 deep lying play makers in the same team.
 
Since we are out of the man utd loop, here's a question. Where would you rate Hargreaves in a draft like this? (Naming as I dont expect him to be picked)

Peak Cesc (pre-Barca for me) was not at all a deep lying playmaker. He was very advanced and at his best did not play the same position as Xavi. One key was his movement combinations with Nasri very different than Xavi's typical play. I tend to agree that Xavi and Cesc won't necessarily be optimal but its definitely not because they are both DLP

I didn't say they were deep playing playmakers. What I meant was they were way too similar and while may complement each other, won't compliment the team a lot. As a more obvious example, just like playing 2 similar deep lying playmakers don't. (different position as compared to Cesc/Xavi obviously but same logic)
 
I think Cesc and Xavi works if you take his Arsenal version. The problem comes when combining those 2 with the rest of his side they don't all fit, that means you have to take a different version of Cesc which wouldn't suit Xavi. Dilemmas

Real play Kroos and Modric. Apaprt from being creative CMs, I don't see Xavi and Fabregas similar players. People tend to see Xavi by default as under tiki-taka and every partner of his gets compared to Iniesta. They both fit well in tiki-taka, but he would have been a brilliant CM out of it too. Xaviesta is just unique and nothing could replicate it. I'm not even trying to remotely duplicate that.
